The drummer is one of a kind. She had been a professional drummer for about 15 years now and became the most sought-after session drummer in Japan for decade. Besides playing for NEMOPHILA (and other fill-in when called upon) she is also a lecturer/instructor at drums school and plays for corporate sound production company. Since you are a drummer yourself, we skip NEMOPHILA introduction series to her specific story... NEMOPHILA - PART 3 Murata Tamu: Smiling Drums Goddess. Known as the smiling drums goddess, Ai Murata (stage name: Murata Tamu, or Tamu for short) is a powerful and established professional solo drummer. She started as jazz drummer in 2007 at the early age of 15 and received guidance from a very well established session drummer, Masahiko Noguchi at Saila Drum School, Yokohama, Japan. Now she is also a lecturer/instructor at Saila. She is on top of her game as a support drummer and the most sought-after for fill-in role in Japan for many years. Tamu continue her drumming activities after graduated from high school and in 2013 she launched her own KZfaq channel Murata Tamu (by June 2022 it gained close to 65 millions views). That same year, she joined all girls rock band SORAMIMI. She graduate from university in 2015, the same year she was awarded as the best female drummer in the voting project My Goddess 2015 by BEEAST - Living with Rock, Lifestyle Support Magazine. In the same voting project, SAKI, Mary's Blood guitarist won the best female guitarist award. In 2016, SORAMIMI released an album that includes the song 'Parallel Line', the first song composed and written by Tamu. She also signed her first endorsement contract with TAMA Drums that year. SORAMIMI suspended in 2017 and from then on, her professional carrier in solo drumming started to picked-up drastically. In January 2017, she released a self-produced DVD 'Murata Tamu's Hyper Drum Training. She made her debut in solo live performance in February at TSUTAYA O-Crest live music venue (it was a sold-out venue.) In April 2017, she joined a project led by Takeshi Kuramochi and Daisuke Kurosawa for INSPION Inc., a corporate sound production company providing music for games and TV programs. Among their prominent clients are CAPCOM, Cygames, Square Enix, SEGA, Nippon Television Network Corporation, BANDAI NAMCO Studios and many more. She is still an active staff member of INSPION Inc. until now (2022). In May 2017, she held a second live solo concert at TSUTAYA O-West and invited Japan's infamous drummer, Nyango Star as her guest. She released an EP titled INNOCENT in September with four original songs, one of which she also sings. She appeared at TSUTAYA O-West again for her third live solo concert to commemorate the release of INNOCENT. In July 2017, Tamu was awarded as the best female drummer again in the voting project My Goddess 2017. She appeared in NAONのYAON, an outdoor stage festival celebrating female artists organized by legendary Japanese all-female metal band SHOW-YA, every year since 2017 and she is NAONのYAON 'house drummer'. She is one of the prominent support drummer in Guitar Girls Collection project co-organized by SAKI of Mary's Blood (NEMOPHILA guitarist now). She is also the drummer support for idol group The World Standard (WASUTA), Nanase Aikawa, Rie a.k.a Suzaku and many other successful artists. She regularly appeared on the national music information TV 'MUSIC BB'. Tamu was very active with drums seminars at vocational schools and musical instrument stores; and Drum Clinic Tour in China. In August 2017, she launched a KZfaq channel Tamu Zukan where she invite, learn and explore other drummers' skill set as well as various musical instruments. In January 2018, Tama Drumsticks H-TMTM, Murata Tamu signature model hits the market. In March, she appeared in Naka-Kon 2018 (Kansas City, USA) - an annual convention celebrating anime, manga, cosplay, music, fashion and gaming. Tamu was invited as a guest drummer and performed at the event, a gesture of recognition and appreciation for her contribution to the industries under the INSPION banner. She held another live concert at TSUTAYA O-West in May 2018 to commemorate the release of her double-sided A-side single "Super D & D-Completely Lead I'm Me / D Absolutely! SAMURAI in the Rain" featuring Ladybeard - former vocalist of Deadlift Lolita and Ladybaby, now a lead vocalist of BABYBEARD. In mid 2018, she held her 5th installment of her solo live concerts at two venues, OSAKA MUSE and Shibuya WWW-X celebrating her entering into 10 years of professional drumming. By 2019, she already had 6 live solo concerts under her belt with the latest one was held in January at TSUTAYA O-West. In August 2019, she was invited to perform in Mayu Session band by vocalist, Mayu and bassist, Haraguchi-san who were high school friends and just quit their bands, LiPSTICK and HöLDERLINS respectively. Mayu contacted SAKI (MARY'S BLOOD guitarist, ex-Destrose) through mutual friend to play guitar. SAKI then introduced Hazuki (DISQUALIA guitarist) to the rest of the band since Disqualia activities was put on hold and Hazuki that time was a support guitarist for RAMI and Li-sa-X (in 2020, Li-sa-X BAND was formed with Hazuki as permanent member). Mayu Session band performed at live venue and they hits off immediately eventhough its the first time they played together on stage and some members didn't know each other before. They had lots of fun together and thought this is what they are looking for individually - technical superiority asides, a tight band and fun friends. After that one session ended they decided to stay together and make their quintet permanent, which is now known as NEMOPHILA. In September 2019, she announced in her social media "I became a drummer of NEMOPHILA. Thanking you in advance. I'm glad I met some nice friends and I'll hit them with my soul." ...and she did hit them hard as the band grew tighter every day, in line with the growth of their local and international fan base. In October 2019, Tamu signed another endorsement contract with MEINL cymbals. SAKI, the composer for Mary's Blood said that she and the composer team write songs for NEMOPHILA and pass the midi to other members for input but Tamu, being the most experienced member of the band write the drums notations by herself. Entering 2020, NEMOPHILA announced Japan tour schedule for that year but eventually cancelled due to the pandemic. They managed to perform one show in February 2020 at Shibuya REX not featuring all band members because Tamu was on maternity leave. Tamu had always been called up to fill in for drummers' absence but in her absence, NEMOPHILA called-in the legendary drummer Miki 'mittan' Tsunoda of SHOW-YA (one of the best-selling Japanese metal bands in history) who was more than happy to make an appearance that day covering for Tamu. While in lockdown, mittan also seen paying respect to Tamu during her time-off giving birth. Mittan appeared in NEMOPHILA line ups again supporting them covering two SHOW-YA songs, taking the drummer's place while honouring Tamu by wearing the frog t-shirt which is Tamu's trademark shirt. Another legendary drummer did the same was Kyoko Tomita of Princess Princess (all-female rock band, known for their 7th single 'Diamonds' - first ever single in Japan that hits over millions sales) while NEMOPHILA did their cover song. A respect from legendary Japanese drummers really shows how massive Tamu's reputation is in drummers community. She played in Roland/BOSS Players Summit 2020 to wrap up Roland's Junior Drums Competition in which she was one of the judges that time. In 2021, she took part in NAONのYAON as NEMOPHILA drummer. Gacharic Spin also took part in that event but their drummer Yuri was on maternity leave. Levin, the drummer of La'cryma Christi was covering Yuri's place that time but since NAONのYAON is dedicated to only female artists, Levin was not permitted to play. Therefore, Tamu filled in for Yuri and was seen reading the music sheets for the entire performance. That was not the first time Tamu supporting Gacharic Spin. Back in 2018 during Gacharic Spin tour, Tomo-zo (guitar) was hospitalized due to an accident so Hana (drums & vocal that time, now Hana is guitar & vocal) took over Tomo-zo's role and Tamu was called in to cover for Hana's seat. Gacharic Spin could pick any session guitarist to cover for Tomo-zo but it seemed they prefer Tamu to stepped in for Hana who was covering for Tomo-zo. That again shows how reliable Tamu's drumming skills is and how thoughtful she is for answering emergency request in such short notice. She is a humble and lovely person who always look after the band members as her own little sisters especially her rhythmic partner Haraguchi-san. However in an interview after the January 2022 show, Haraguchi-san said she looked up to Tamu as a mother figure, and Tamu amusingly accepted her role being a mother of NEMOPHILA. She is a mother of two daughters and the band members always looking up to her as their senior. Mayu during the announcement of her marriage in live streaming addressed Tamu as Mama Senpai. Introducing fusion drummer Murata Tamu. She looks like a kid, usually can't stop smiling, is definitly tiny ... and is a monster on those drums. I just saw them last Friday night at Whisky a Go Go...and they are absolutely phenomenal. Studio-tight in execution, but with a massive layer of stage presence and charisma on top of it. A long-ass drive (from Portland) for me...and worth every bit of it. First song? The rehearsal studio video of Oiran. Never looked back.

They may not look that old but they are all time served professionals. Tamu the drummer has been in several bands like SORAMIMI, but her main notoriety is as one of Japan's best session drummers. Saki on guitar always has multiple projects and solo things on the go. Most notable Mary's Blood (just gone on hiatus) and like many Japanese female musicians Destrose. This is one of the bands to watch, no question. They just started in 2019 and are blowing up fast. As you can see from the gang vocals, they don't take themselves too seriously-Hazuki even winks. They almost seem to be enjoying a private joke, that goes "Hi, we're a bunch of cute, fun girls and we are going to rip your face off, and you are going to like it.” Nemophila were founded in 2019. They are a supergroup composed of: Mary's Blood guitarist Saki ex-Lipstick vocalist Mayu ex-Disqualia guitarist Hazuki (also plays with Lisa-X) ex-Hölderlins bassist Haraguchi-san, and ex-Soramimi drummer Muratatam (also does other projects) Initially, they were just a side project, co-organized Mayu with some help from Saki. They started off posting metal covers of well-known rock, pop and metal songs. I saw their very 1st upload, The Trooper cover. I am a huge Iron Maiden fan and had already been smitten by Saki and her guitar skills from Mary’s Blood. Now Nemophila is neck and neck with Jinjer as my favorite bands.

Murata Tamu is a masterful metal drummer, with a Tama endorsement deal. You might particularly enjoy the Hypnosis MV, as it has a drum breakdown instead of the usual twin guitar solos by HAZUKI and SAKI. Then watch all of their other videos. Each song has a different sound and each video has a different style.

My first Nemophila song was also "Dissension". I immediately fell in love with the music and the clean vocals but was on the fence with Mayu's high pitched screaming. After a couple songs I fell off the fence on the love it side. I recommend "Raitei" and "Oiran" from the Naon Yaon2021 show, "Demon Light", "Life", and "Blooming" for a nice little surprise. Get a few songs under your belt before "Blooming". Their covers are particularly impressive too.

“Dissension” was my introduction to Nemophila as well Tony. They are starting to release new music quickly but my recommendation to you is first “Life” because it is a beautiful song and the rest of the band are basically playing to the drummer in the video as she was just back from having a daughter. After that I recommend “Revive” enjoy!

Not really a metal guy and I could do without the over the top screaming. But I love watching these ladies. I think they're extremely talented and charismatic and what they do. Great musicianship all around. But the beauty and the legs on the two guitar players are mind-boggling as well !

If you ask what other recommended songs from NEMOPHILA, I can say that's not an easy question to answer by NEMOPHILA fans. First if like emotional Rock Ballad, I would recommend 'Life'. If you like top notch technical musical skills in heavy metal, I would recommend 'A Ray of Light'. If you want to hear the drummer goes really wild with her skill, you can listen to the latest single ADABANA. 'Hypnosis' is very unique sound (almost sounds like any Kula Shaker songs. 'Monster' is an awesome old school heavy metal. Don't forget to listen also to 'Raitei', 'Oiran', 'Sorai'... okay I give up. Might as well you listen to all of their original songs. LOL... NEMOPHILA is the GODDESS of heavy metal in the making. :)

I mean, obviously they're awesome, and obviouly you'll get a lot of recommendations for more Nemophila (rightly so) but that closing remark about the little whammy bar action makes me think you'd probably really enjoy the playing of HAL-CA from Asterism. A three piece off-the-charts talented band from Fukuoka. Gunfire, Church, Dawn, Yunagi, doesn't matter, they don't have a bad song (whammy not mandatory but sometimes featured quite heavily). My first Nemophila exposure actually was Dissension, still my favorite to date.

To me, the group chants sound like cheerleading chants... in the middle of this, the most metal of their own songs to that point. Cheerleading in a strong metal song? Aw why not! Fun!

My first Nemophila song was "Oiran" (KZfaq version). It was their first song. I played that song every day for about 10 months. I adore this band. I suggest listening to that one next. But, honestly, any one will do.

They just kicked off their USA tour at Whisky-a-go-go last weekend and, bless them, they streamed the first two songs live - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9VhhK6E0deuYmg.html . I love their MV for 'Revive' but they opened the show with it so I think you'd appreciate that they do this all live just as well as MV's. Have you looked at Asterism - another incredibly musically talented band, like a Metal/Rock version of King Crimson and Sabbath combined!

Can’t site the interview atm, and her feet are beyond my counting abilities (I’m a pro bassist, but extreme music is for listening, I don’t actually try to pull it off!), so many Nemophila songs have those difficult stutters, where instead of 16s all day, it’s bursts. But she did identify one song, and I think it was this one, where she singled out stop-and-immediately start again footwork (I call stutter) as the most difficult to reproduce. From a lady who routinely plays dream theater covers (Inspiron project, solo, whenever she can) as well as XJapan, or some non-pop-rock fusion, or like Lupin the Third (famous fusionish tv theme), on her calling card solo CD Innocent which has a very diverse set of tunes, and she plays piano, xylophone, saxophone etc, kid’s got skillz! The latest release Adabana [blossom, from Nemophila=(specific species of blue)flower], basically features a drum solo, do check it out.

They are really great and IMHO the best band in that genre around atm. They make a nice pair with band-maid who have opened doors for them abroad. Saki and kanami are good friends. The contrast if course is that band-maid have been together for ages and do few side projects. Both are made up of true professionals who read and write scored music, and Akane too writes her drum parts with a pencil on paper, which is a key to how well integrated the ensembles are. I think both are playing Aftershock on day five with the Mexican female band Domination. Between them are some of the very best younger rock bands in the world who happen to be female. Those two and sokoninaru are my current favourites. Sokoninaru include two guys and a woman, their drummer is mental good, and their music tests a drummer to the limits. A time signature every five seconds yet you are still humming the tunes.

I watched your reaction with great interest. If you want to focus on the drummer Muratamu, the best place to start is the latest song called ADABANA! I think you will also enjoy her drumming in the song RAITEI!

Tamu Murata (drummer) is one of the best drummers in rock these days. Nemophila song *"Hypnosis"* is a must for you to react to. An unusual metal song where they change things up. This song was written for Tamu to fill it in with a her magic. Wish I could tell you what that is but that would ruin the surprise. Great reaction as are all of your reactions! Here's a recommendation: li-sa-x band. Either 'Looking Up to You' or 'One More Chance is Enough.' Serious young guitar prodigy. Extreme musicality, shredding prog rock with an incredible Pop/Jazz vocalist. With Billy Sheehan on bass (not in the vids unfortunately) Also has Hazuki, one of the guitarists from Nemophila. Think Dream Theater meets Christina Aguilera. Incredible stuff.

If you're looking for whammy bar revival, check out the japanese instrumental trio ASTERISM. Hal-ca, the guitarist, is using the whammy bar quite often. She's not even 20 yo and the band has been formed in 2014 (I let you do the maths 🤓). The bassist is amazing too and his brother on drums is also great. I'm glad you reacted to NEMOPHILA, their drummer Tamu Murata is one of my favorite drummers from Japan (with Akane of course 🦍🥁).
