Many people question why he didn't leave Joseon to burn after all the government had done to him, and the answer is because his own family, or at a portion, were killed by the Japanese. He knew the pain that the war had done to his family, and so didn't fight for the Joseon dynasty, but more for the people that would've fallen victim to the Japanese. Simply put, he's an amazing man.

300ish years later, in 1915, in Gallipoli, a Turkish lietuenant colonel said: "I order you not to charge, but to die. For as we die, we shall be redeemed by the officers and soldiers that came after us." That lietuenant colonel became the Father of an entire country, and I can't help but think that he was inspired in the same way that Admiral Yi was. Greatness was achieved, and there was no difference. Blessed be those who stood loyal and true to their beliefs.

When I was studying in US on 2010, my US history teacher introduced his speech at Galipoli. Although I already knew that President Ataturk was Turkish hero, I hadn't heard of that speech, and I was like "he spoke same thing as Admiral Yi!". But my history teacher said that his speech is ruthless and inhumane. And I was upset about that. So I said "Ma'am, I believe you misunderstood. As far as I know, he also risked his life with his soldiers in Galipoli. I believe he was true patriot and hero of Turkey." She disagreed, and possibly gave me bad grade because of that but no regrets.

Man, you could feel Yi’s entire life in this music. The early machinations of corrupt Korean officials, his extraordinary career as an admiral, and then the sudden tone drop, signifying his death at Noryang. These musics from Extra History are so under-appreciated

Probably could be the best soundtrack for a naval battle in a total war game. The ships sailing slowly towards each other, the synchronised gun and cannon fire. Ships being boarded and fighting erupts between marines the chaos that erupts from battle and the outmatched losing heart before being overrun or surrendering.

"In a later engagement more than seventy Japanese vessels, including warships and transports were encountered by the Allied fleet and were sunk. The devastating blow (Battle of Busan) which has been dealt to the Japanese fleet has isolated the enemy armies in Korea and has cut them off from their home bases. The naval action, which stretched over a period of several days, was broken off in the mid-summer of the year 1592. The naval forces were under the command of the Korean Admiral Yi Sun-sin" --US Admiral Chester W. Nimitz "Throughout history there have been few generals accomplished at the tactics of frontal attack, sudden attack, concentration and dilation. Napoleon, who mastered the art of conquering the part with the whole, can be held to have been such a general, and among admirals, two further tactical geniuses may be named: in the East, Yi Sun-sin of Korea, and in the West, Horatio Nelson of England...Anyone who can be compared to Yi should be better than Michiel de Ruyter from Netherlands. Nelson is far behind Yi in terms of personal character and integrity. Yi was the inventor of the covered warship known as the turtle ship. He was a truly great commander and a master of the naval tactics of three hundred years ago" --Japanese Admiral Sato "It is always difficult for Englishmen to admit that Nelson ever had an equal in his profession, but if any man is entitled to be so regarded, it should be this great naval commander of Asiatic race (Admiral Yi) who never knew defeat and died in the presence of the enemy; of whose movements a track-chart might be compiled from the wrecks of hundreds of Japanese ships lying with their valiant crews at the bottom of the sea, off the coasts of the Korean peninsula" --British Admiral George Alexander Ballard "It may be proper to compare me with Nelson, but not with Korea's Yi Sun-sin, for he has no equal" --Japanese Admiral Togo
