Welcome to the Party, Comrades! Today we discuss setting up your digital parametric equalizer to give your drums the best tone possible. This demonstration is on Reaper with their built-in EQ plugin, but the techniques used can be applied to any parametric EQ. Thank you! Try listening on studio monitors or dj headphones on higher volume; you probably won’t hear the magnified frequency on a phone or most computer speakers. I should have mentioned that.

Thank you for the interesting tutorial. One simple question: is it possible to add EQ or other FX during the recording stage? I mean to pre set a best EQ to my drums in the studio to avoid its total post editing manipulation. Tks Roberto

Depending on the mixer you use, yes it’s usually possible to do rudimentary EQ, compression, noise gate, and other FX in real time; but all this processing on the front end can take away from the sound quality (especially with digital mixers), and generally you want to record as dry or unaffected as possible, so you can always go back later and change things. The FX in post I generally higher quality, and can be dialed in better. The perfect EQ can change day today depending on the weather, drum heads, air quality, etc; so it’s good to dial it back in for every serious recording
