In this video Huck and Tel brave the 110 degree weather and experiment with dry ice on the sand dunes. On Mars, dry Ice moves down the sand slopes creating large grooves in the sand. We experiment to see how well dry ice reacts to sand in our back yard.

I’d be interested to see what would happen with different thicknesses of dry ice. I figured that thinner pieces would work better because there’s less mass for the surface area so they’d get stuck less, but the piece with the rock on it went quite well, so I don’t know.
@TeamStew

Yeah we wondered the same thing. I have always wanted to go back with a wider but thinner piece of dry ice that we could try to ride down but I know our weight would just sink us into the sand.

Life goal! Thanks for the creative idea with real world implications. One note that dry ice doesn't evaporates, it sublimates. Goes straight from a solid to a gas. It would be cool to see how real ice compares.

Thanks for the comment. Nasas jet propulsion lab channel did this experiment and showed the difference between dry ice and regular ice. It was super cool. Definitely worth trying.

Bro do this Dry Ice Rockets: Construct small rockets using dry ice and water in sealed containers. Place them on the sand dunes and observe as they shoot off into the air, propelled by the pressure from the sublimating carbon dioxide.

I came across the mysterious rocks that move in death valley. I wonder if that method of natural occurrence with the dry ice you're using here, could lead us to how the pyramids were made.

Hey, NASA JPL scientist here - glad my JPL video inspired such fun experiments! Love all the things you tried out, and I'm impressed at how easily those blocks moved and how nice those tracks are. We've seen less lubrication over sand with larger grains. Where were you doing your experiments? We did some of our first work (and got some of the best activity) in Utah, near St. George. (If you want to email me instead: go back to the JPL video. myfirstname.lastname@jpl.nasa.gov.)

We are happy you liked the video. It was a lot of fun and I never would have guessed dry ice would do that on sand. We never would have tried it without your video. We did this at Sand Hollow in Hurricane Utah.

Hey we have a question for you. Would it be possible, if we got enough dry ice, to attach it to a board and ride down it? In your vide you mentioned (as a joke) Astronauts riding down on the hill on the blocks of dry ice... but we really want to try it. Thoughts? Want to come to souther Utah and try it out with us? 😀

Hey guys How are you doing I honestly enjoyed your video a lot I think it really makes you think Correct me if I'm wrong, so this is caused by the air cushion created by the gas as well as the gas penetrating the sand particles in turn making them act as a liquid , right?
@TeamStew
@TeamStew 4 жыл бұрын
That was my understanding of how it happens. Here is a short article I read. www.scientificamerican.com/article/dry-ice-smoke-carves-up-dunes/ thanks so much for your kind comments. This whole idea was based off the vide done by the JPL NASA video we saw. You should check it out as well. The real question now is, how much gas would need to sublimate to propel dry ice die the hill while we ride on it? Think it’s possible?
@atechnews3221
@atechnews3221 4 жыл бұрын
Team Stew As of riding on sand I was just thinking of it If you want to use dry ice I guess you'll be needing a huge a amount with a large surface area to provide the amount of gas needed for this plus the rate of gas introduced into the sand should be high as well I think you can surf the sand easier if you could use a board with mini jets pushing the air into the sand, this will make sand in your vicinity behave like liquid This will be cheaper, easier and more plausible than using dry ice What do you think? If you're interested I think there is more ways to make it very feasible to a DIY at home level
@TeamStew

I mean, that’s a great Q. Gravity, surface area, and pressure prob have to be considered. It never made the film but I stood on one and it just sunk into the ground. Gas was still escaping and rushing out through the sand around it but my mass and gravity where too much for a little thing to carry me.
