Took an extra long weekend trip to the Florida Keys in December. We took the Yankee Freedom ferry to Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas National Park. Camped out for two nights and had a fantastic time. The weather was nice; even with a little rain wind. The snorkeling was subpar due to the wind coming from the wrong direction and blowing in a bunch of milky sediment. The ferry ride was about 2.5 hours and very enjoyable. The campsites were well shaded and not too crowded; i guess we got lucky with the time of year. I only brought my gopro and small P&S camera... Definitely have to go back with my big camera for some night photos!
The fort is absolutely huuuuge!!! It is really a mind blowing structure in the middle of nowhere surrounded by picturesque turquoise water. It's kind of a shame the fort was never finished and many of the inside structures have collapsed or were demolished, but I'm glad the National Park Service has kept this national treasure accessible to all of us!
If you want to camp you must reserve the ferry ride several months in advance, I got my spots 8 months before my scheduled date. You must bring all your gear to the ferry very early in the morning because it is loaded before all the passengers can board.
