Out of the Woods

In this video I answer a question from a subscribed. I received an email on how to dry reclaimed and/or barn wood once it is harvested from a failing structure. I show in detail on how to process the wood then how to properly stack it for air drying. In order for the wood to be used in furniture/woodworking projects it needs to be properly dried after harvesting. The First step is to air dry the wood in an outdoor setting. I use "stickers" which are small 1x2 pieces of lumber to separate each board and to stack them. This ensures that every board has maximum air flow around it increasing the drying process immensely. It is also necessary to place a shield/tarp of some sort over the top of the stack to prevent rain from falling onto the wood. I use old tin as a top. Once the wood is stacked properly and covered forget about it. Come back to it from time to time to ensure that no insect infestation has occurred and to check that no rain is falling down on the stack. Once a few months has past, preferably summer/spring months the wood is ready to go inside of a dry kiln for final processing. This will ensure that all insects/insect larva that are still present inside the timber will be killed. After these steps are taken the wood will be ready to made into furniture or other woodworking projects.

I can't help but think about all the times you're having to go set your camera up, go do your thing, go back and get the camera, set it up again, do your thing etc etc etc. Plus all the editing prior to publish. Looks like it's just you, and I have a feeling there are no second takes. Good work man.

I found a 9' log cut off today in Lake Huron. The last of the big timber mills closed in the late 1880's so it's been bouncing around on the bottom a while. Going to make a mantle out of it once I let it dry out for a year or so

I'm reclaiming my old redwood fencing. It will be 100 + degrees up on my flat roof for another 2 months, so I'm considering dipping in orange oil solution and popping the planks up there until the next rain. Think it would be possible to find a mill in Northern California that will kiln dry the wood for me, or do I need to just bite the bullet and build my own?
