I bought both the 700 Pro X and the 770 Pro 80 ohm. Here are my thoughts: - The 700 doesn't just have lower treble than the 770, it feels like there is no treble at all. All of the air and detail we enjoy in music, gone. Yes, the 770's treble can get a little excessive at times but it's still better than having almost zero treble in my opinion. - The 700 has better sub-bass extension which is great but the mid-bass has a higher bump than on the 770 which makes kick drums annoyingly overpowered. They've replaced the treble spike of the 770 with a mid-bass spike instead. Pick your poison. - The 700 sounds a bit muffled compared to the 770. Maybe it's the new thick filter fabric they put over the drivers, but the 770 sounds a little clearer and it's not just the higher treble giving off that impression. I've heard other reports of the 700 and 900 Pro X sounding like there is a veil over the music. - The 700 has a narrower soundstage than the 770. Not by much, but it's noticeable. - The 700 has a much higher clamp force which makes it way less comfortable than the 770, despite having deeper earpads. And I don't have a very big head. In conclusion, I'd go for the 770 Pro as it has a clearer sound, a wider soundstage, is more comfortable and cheaper. The treble spike and lower sub-bass can easily be fixed with EQ and the 770 Pro can easily be modded to have a detachable cable (just look at a KZfaq tutorial). The 80 ohm version has just enough volume when driven by a phone but the 32 ohm version and 700 Pro X can get louder. Hope that helps some people make a more informed decision. Peace!

I’ve got the DT770(250ohm) and am looking to switch over to the DT900 Pro X’s. Have you tried them out by any chance?
@Nayah9
@Nayah9 Жыл бұрын
@@NeonPizza80s I tried them in the shop where I bought the 700 Pro X (which I later returned). I personally wouldn't switch from 770 to 900. The soundstage won't get any better (even though 900 is open back), sound will leak out, it suffers from the same "muffled" sound that is found on the 700 and has a painfully high clamp force. I also struggled to get a decently high volume from my phone with the 900 compared to the 700. Advantages of 900 Pro X are it measures flatter (though EQ can fix any headphone) and has a detachable cable. At the end of the day, you should try them for yourself to see if they fit your needs. All good retailers have a free return policy.

I'm definitely going for the dt770 but i dont know which one, im planning to use it for my phone and pc (no amp or dac) the 32, 80 and 250 ohm are all the same price, which one should i get?
@Nayah9
@Nayah9 Жыл бұрын
@@woro. I'd say the 32 should be better suited for your needs since it'll be louder and has a shorter cable which is handy with a phone, but the 80 might be good too since it has a longer cable which is good for a pc, and people say it has a little more bass and a little less of a treble spike. Try both if you can.

Great comment! I'm definitely hearing that slightly muffled veil-like effect with my DT900 Pro X's after doing numerous comparisons between them and my DT770(250ohm's) paired with a DAC. Sure, the 900's sound a bit more open and offer a wider soundstage , which in return sounds a little warmer and more natural, but that natural sound instantly becomes compromised from that annoying veil which slathers all over the clarity. the 900's imo, have a harsher clamping force and the ear cup fabric just feels weird. Thinking of just opting for the 770(80ohm) over my 250ohm specifically for the straight cable AND ditching the DT900 Pro X's and getting a pair of DT1990's. I need both closed and open back, and based on what I'm hearing the DT900 and based on what you've said about the 700's wont do the trick.

Good job as always, Mike. I'll give it a go some day, still loyal to my DT 770 Pro 250 Ω, but it could well be a quite steep turn to get used to such difference in its lower ends.

Thank you, excellent review and you answered all my questions. My normal headphones, 64 Audio A12t's are in the shop for maintenance for a month, and I need a set headphones to cover some mixes in the meantime. The EQ curve on both 770 and 770x kind of freaked me out. It seems really "scooped" in the mids. But you and other have mentioned that the top end is les strident so that's a good thing. You helped me make an informed decision.
@sounddesignmix3002

Post script. Having purchased the 700 Pro X I'll add and confirm many of your comments on the sound stage. Yes, they are lacking a little in the sub bass, and the actual bass I would describe as not exactly tight. It's not bad and by no means a deal killer, just a bit flabby. As for the highs, the EQ bump at 10K is noticeable especially on vocals, shakers, high hats etc. At higher volumes it can be a bit strident. I noticed this on some of my tracks and not others so that's something to be aware. In the end I could mix with these headphones no problem. The isolation and comfort is excellent. I'll keep them and do a few mixes and see how they translate to other speakers. They are a good tool to have in your studio set up especially if you do any mixes on the road from hotel rooms, HOWEVER, they should not be your only monitors. Combined with a good pair of monitors they will serve a mixer well.

I'm getting rid of mine and going for the DT1990's instead. that Filtered, almost muffled Veil-like effect masking the clarity is a deal breaker for me personally. This isn't an issue at all with the DT770(250) Plus, the 900's aren't that much more spacious and open sounding Vs the 770's. There IS a difference, don't get me wrong but it's not night and day or that substantial or anything.

I also found the top end of the 700 Pro X a bit more subdued compared to other headphones. I mainly use them for DJ studio mixes. It took a bit of getting use to however I've found it suites my mixing style by prioritising in my ear the other frequency's to balance in the mix.

Thanks, great comparison. We use DT 770 Pros for tracking and are very happy although they can get a little warm if worn for long periods and we spend a lot of time getting tangles out of those curly leads! I wish they'd upgrade the 770s with detachable cables. Maybe we'll try these new 7700 Pro X for some bass player's tracking cans next time. Quite a big price difference though....

Is it better to use open-back headphones like the DT 990 and 900 for mixing and leave the closed-backs for recording/monitoring/tracking? That is how the headphones are sold by Beyer, but I've never quite understood because you do have more bass in a closed-back (as well as in IEMs). There's a sense that sound is more focused or concentrated at the ear, as well, in a closed back. I understand that you don't want sound leakage when recording, but at the same time I'm not sure if open-backs always represent sound more truthfully, especially if what you're hearing originated as electronic (synth), rather than live acoustic music.

Personally I use 2 headphones when producing. I use DT990s and HD25s (only use HD25s as a compact and lighter headphone while maintaining good frequency response when I’m working away from the studio). In my opinion the 250Ω DT990s are great regarding you can access a quiet space and if you are only mixing. Obviously never use open backs for recording - if you are recording 770s are the way to go in my opinion. In my setup I also use a Microamp just because I like having a wider volume control.
