A wise diesel before he was scrapped said this “We all thought we would last forever as long as we could function. But the men in the workshops are always working to improve old designs or to make new ones, and sometimes they come up with something that meets all their expectations, making the old designs obsolete. And when they’ve become obsolete they are thrown away. It doesn’t matter if it’s steam or diesel. If there is something better than them, then there is no need to keep them around.

I remember when the 800 class units were new! GE's paint never held up like EMDs. You can bet they've all got millions of miles on them.

Seeing those locomotives feels just as eerie as seeing images of steam locomotives being sent to scrap yards as you know there's a good chance of the locomotives being scrapped.

Wow! First time I've seen a BNSF funeral train in my life. We had a NS funeral train pass down here via Columbus, Ohio sometime last year. Those locos ended up getting scraped and destroyed.

Those C40-8Ws should be used as updated local freight service engines to shuttle trains between yards or as yard units where you don't have remote control locomotives.

Just a bit of description correction, all of them are Santa Fe engines awaiting scrap, the first 2 and last 2 are just supplying power to the train.

I do not understand RR but Management they will Sell or Scrap 15-20 year old units but keep other ones 50 years. BN is a prime example they kept SD9's around for 50 years but were scrapping 15 year old SD45's and F45's. I know they were thirsty and could break crankshafts but Wisconsin Central figured that out and derated the HP to 3300 and that solved the crankshaft problem and then picked up a bunch of former BN and SF units for a bargain basement price and got at least 10 more years out of them. There is a video on youtube called switching Pilson (Pilsen) shot in Chicago with an absolutely immaculate GP39-2 BNSF unit that even though it was 50 years old looked liked it rolled out of EMD yesterday It is a rebuilt GP30 with the same carbody.
@DounutCereal Жыл бұрын
All depends on the work required of them. Little EMD's are excellent for shortline and industrial sidings and are endlessly rebuildable, so it always ends up being cheaper to refurb them than buy new, also to replace them there's nothing on the market to really replace them. The mainline GE's have crankcase problems with fatigue cracks in the 4000hp models like the dash 8's and 9's that show themselves after about 20-25 years, so they're really only good for one or two refurbs in their life before they need a new engine, where as EMD's with their welded engine blocks can be cut and welded wherever they break, which is waaaay more affordable than going to the manufacturer for a new block. It is possible to refurb older dash 8's and 9's but the RR's consider it not worth the cost so dump them as trade ins. Shame, they're good machines if you drop a new cast engine into them they will give another 20-30 years of life which they're doing to the dash 9's in Australia. GEVO's have a welded engine block like EMD's so it'll be interesting to see how long a life they have

Why are there so many engines being retired it seems that they should have a longer service life look at them the paint isn't even faded on most them. It is hard to believe that the cost of replacement is worth the potential savings of new equipment

That's what I don't get. Yes, they are DC, but they weren't that different than the Dash-9 series, which were also DC and you still see lots of them on the rails. I guess it is just cheaper to throw them away for scrap or sell them off vs retrofitting them with modern electronics.
