In my last job as a music tech in a college going back about 10 years ago I had to service a Korg MS2000 which is similar with the main CPU and a DSP. The unit was much worse than yours and would produce nasty noisy distorted sounds when played and many of the sound programs and controls wouldnt work. I spent some time trying to figure out what was wrong and decided the DSP chip was faulty. I went on internet to look for another DSP chip and found a seller in America so I bought it. When it arrived I decided my college supplied soldering tools wernt up to the job of removing the old chip and resoldering the new chip so I found a local electronics servicing company who took the board and DSP chip and did the work for me for a good price. When I got the board back I installed it in to the synth again, connected it all up and powered it up and it worked perfectly again!

One day I may get myself a hot air station and replace the DSP... I was really struggling to track down the problem! ... thanks for the tip! Howard

Great video. Now I know where to begin. The MK I have has an issue with the Vocoder. The 1/4 cable in produces no sound, but the VU meter shows a signal. And the 1/8 inch in cuts in and out. To me this seems like just a loose connection somewhere but wonder if you have ever run into a similar issue.

I am going to open the front panel following your instructions. I don't have a wrench and Allen key neighter lol, now I understand why I couldn't remove the knobs . I hope I will be able to fix the 2 buttons, which seem to be dead. Thanks!!

Morning Ian!! :-). No synthesisers were harmed in the making of this video... but trust me, after I found I couldn’t fix it, I was soooo tempted to take a hammer to it!!!! Hope you’re well mate!! For those that enjoy things being taken apart, pop over to visit Ian’s scrapping channel... where he sometimes uses a hammer to smash stuff up :-)

You sound like the Smart Gremlin from Gremlins 2, and I love it. I got a Microkorg from my job for $100, but the cutoff knob is broken. Still not a bad deal, and this video helped me figure out how to get the board out. Cheers!

Owwwh Chris, it's always great to have a noodle around on a keyboard!! I'm a bit partial to synths... and music, probably guitar a little bit more... that said, there are so many other things that im passionate about and want to share with you ... dont worry, we will get back to some dubious projects in the near future... probably a bit of jet engine - maybe some welding up of somthing silly that annoys the wife... :-)

I am looking at the schematic for this product line. I didn't see any easy way to reprogram the DSP. There seems to be no debugging header of any kind. However, you could see if someone could loan you a Segger JTAG or equivalent programmer along with attaching a header to pins 138 -141 of the DSP. This would allow some access to the chip.

I've been in touch with a couple of people now, so lets see what happens and if they engage with me. If not, I'll just enjoy it for what it is!! Thanks kindly for taking time out to look up the CCT - i'm sure you can now see why I can't easily fix it :-)

i got one from a trash find, sadly the power supply and replacement doesn't work. So i know it's the DC input jack. I ordered a new one and i'm hoping I can figure out how to desolder the old one so I can put in a new one. Tho maybe I'll try a spray of deoxit inside, idk why i didn't. I know the synth works because i put some batteries in it. Tho all the knobs are missing now so have to replace those also.

I have a weird issue with my microkorg. The AMP EG position of the edit select knob doesn't seem to connect. If i've selected the previous notch, (the amp section) I can obviously adjust the level of the microkorg with the 1st top knob. If I then go down to the AMP EG section where that same knob should control the attack envelope, instead it thinks its still in the AMP section and still controls the overall volume. If i go down to LFO1 and then "up" the amp eg section, the knobs are still controlling the LFO1 parameters. Its like the microkorg isn't recognizing the AMP EG notch at all when the switch is in that position, but instead either the position before it or after it depending on what was last selected. Is this most likely a dirty contact? I plan on tearing mine down for a good cleaning as well, but I was wondering if anyone else has seen this before.

I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with mine. It turns on, all the knobs and keys appear to be functioning, but only static occasionally comes out, would you have a guess as to what is going wrong inside, or know how to check?

I'd get an oscilloscope on the audio output side of the DSP - before the main amplifier to see...

Thanks! This video is super helpful! I bought a used Microkorg that apparently was plugged with an AC adaptor. It turns on perfectly, but the issue is that I get almost no sound from neither outputs. The outputs have very low volume. What could it be? Thanks mate!

I’ve been given an old microkorg that has a few keys that don’t trigger. Any advice on where to start troubleshooting?
@DubiousEngineering

Youtch! ... get a multimeter over the contacts to see if the key is making contact... that'll keep you stumped for a while :-) 😀... if it doesn't make contact, take the keyboard apart.

I recently replaced all 8 program number buttons that had gone bad on my microkorg. Put it all back together and everything works great. ONE PROBLEM: Now the cap that goes on top of my volume knob comes off very easily. Any theories as to why it doesnt stay on as tight anymore?

I was lucky to find a super rare Vintage Gold MicroKorg special edition. It was mint except someone spilled soda or beer on it and the buttons were sticky. I took off the top fist layer and cleaned it up. The only issue is that the right octave button still sticks sometimes in the humid summer. But only in the summer when it’s humid. In the winter when it’s dry it’s just fine. My question - is there a spray I can put in there without taking it apart that can break down or keep the sugary substance from being sticky when the weather gets warm and humid again, right now it works great but I know when the summer comes back it will stick!
