Not exactly. If you're getting the 65% discount for example then you also get that discount on socials. Then you don't pay socials in most cases on investment income so if your income is from dividends it doesn't affect you.

Ah ok. In Italy with its 70 and 90 percent reductions of your assessable base (90 if relocating to the south), apparently the reduction doesn’t apply to socials (of 26 percent). Although, 2 accountants told me it does and 2 that it doesn’t! Hard to get clarity on that one! Probably needs a clarification from the IT authorities

Madeira was the more liberal about the pandemic in Portugal, now they are trying this approach, the rest of the country is more liberal than other european countries, you can see why almost crypto events were in Lisbon.

It is important to note that the Portuguese appreciate national cohesion and, even in our latin way, we like to pull together in situations of national emergency as a community. We also follow the advice of health authorities, civil defence authorities and the government. This means that people who try to politicise medical advice like what happened in the US will not be well regarded. You are still free not to get vaccinated, that is on you, but if you decide not to wear a mask when mask wearing is a rule, you are not going to be well regarded. This comes from the fact that a mask is supposed to protects others and the Portuguese do look after their neighbours and community. Freedom in Portugal (something we learnt from living without it) is always attached to responsability and in balance with our other cherished rights.

I’m not an expert in Dubai but I know that laws are constantly changing in the UAE and making it easier to get permanent residency .

Yeah it really used to be that way but they are aware of that issue and taking a lot of steps to improve that and get people staying long term

I think you'd have to get a golden visa in order to be able to spend just 5 months per year in Portugal.... and that means spending 500,000 Euros on a house that's located some distance from the coast (new rules go into effect in January). If you get a D7 visa, for example, you have to spend 6 months per year in Portugal in order to retain the visa.

My understanding is that dividends are 0%, but capital gains are 28% even under NHR.

It's funny you know, personal freedom has been such a strange thing the last few years. The US is "land of the free" with the highest rates of incarceration. Dubai people might say is less free but has been one of the only places that has been almost entirely lockdown free. So then where is really free?

Maybe in a way one is most free all alone in a Super Max prison with a good meditation practice, Spinoza's Ethics, Kant's CPR, some Schopenhauer, the Mahabharata. But, I don't think most people want freedom. Like Pascal's lonely room, real freedom is terrifying. However, I know a guy in Portugal who shares my taste for this stuff. So, accompanied by the miserable hope that I can and should be happier than I am in this singular moment here in -9 Montréal, that's where I would want to go :)

I'm pretty sure that that isn't true. The deal is either of the following: (a) 6 months continual residence in Portugal, with no interruptions, or (b) 8 months in Portugal, with small interruptions. [That being said, one can travel from Portugal to another Schengen country without having to get one's passport stamped].

Yeah banks in Dubai aren't crypto friendly we use foreign banks for crypto on and off (unless you use local OTC, which is fine) then transfer to UAE

In general, Dubai seems to run like a business. (which I like) it has a CEO and he sets 10 year goals and works towards it. Yes, the weather is perfect now. I'm in any case thinking of spending summers in Europe. This is where another question comes in. Where do you suggest buying a summer house in Europe? The problem with property is that it can make you tax liable in that country if you own property that you want to use. E.g. Germany or Croatia. It does not matter that you don't live there most of the year.

What about using a forex/crypto broker for payouts instead of an exchange?

NHR isn't a residency status it's a tax status so it's just for if you're a tax resident

nhr is a tax regime you apply for once you have residence visa. Gold visa not avail anymore, only D7 passive income visa.

I think you're the first person I've heard say taxes in Spain are fair. I'd, say taxes in Spain are terrible. The numbers you've given neglect the personal taxes taking money out of the company after paying corporate. The tax department there are also terrible, although thankfully not that on the ball. Best to stay off the Spanish radar where taxes are concerned in most cases, though I love the country.

​@@MichaelRosmer Yes on the surface you are right. However, it all depends on which specific loopholes you use, what type of income you are getting and how much you are taking out of the corporation. For example, someone making 500k euro a year and taking out a 100k salary will pay in most western European countries around 50% tax on the 100k that is taken out and 20%-25% on the 400k that is left in the company, bringing the total tax rate to 26%-30% (that is without using any loophole or treaty). Furthermore, many European countries have very specific loopholes. In Belgium for example, there are (on top of amazing tax treaties) ways to pay rates from 0% to 15% on money that is earned in ones personal name! 0% is the capital gains tax if you do not trade too actively, 15% is the tax on intellectual property (on which no social is to be paid) up to around $90k a year. Spain has the Beckham law and I am sure that there are some other loopholes to bring the total tax rate down a bit. But yes I agree with you 100% for when someone is making 500k a year and wants to take out a lot of money to get a nice house, car and other toys and cannot use loopholes or treaties. Furthermore, many of these loopholes and treaties that I am mentioning are probably in a fragile state..

Also, a ZEC company is a good solution for someone with a business with a few employees. 4% corporate tax rate and you are in the wonderful Spain.

My guess is less likely but it depends if there's loss of services locally and where else things go down

Plus peer pressure - why leave your home now when the big bad wolf is there? Hey! Please do not come to Portugal for the following reasons. 1. Life is so slow paced & people are very lazy, you will have to wait long for basic things to be done, bureaucracy adds salt to injury! 2. Most of the houses do not want to rent and they are in miserable conditions, house owners just want to sell it at unreasonable price, better invest in a index fund that would give better result! 3. Houseold conditions are poor, search about it. Most of the Portugal's housing conditions are poor, dont leave your beautiful house in to live in a downgraded one in Portugal. 4. Portugal is heavily reliable on foreigners money, they will just use you as a cash cow nothing more. 5. Customer service is poor, the wages are low & the lazy culture leads to 0 customer service. 6. Poor public transportation, most areas are not connected by public transport and look like ghost towns. 7. Africans & Indians never apply, they will not rent you a house, they will be sweet on your face, and snitch behind your back. But yes, buy it from them. Buy miserable house, on a location without public transport or no "human activity". Thats what makes them happy, I AM WARNING YOU ALL AGAIN, DO NOT FALL INTO THE TRAP & AVOID VISITING PORTUGAL!

Portugal and Greece may have attractive tax/residency programs but with the waves for repression sweeping across the EU moving from a legacy state like Canada means you may gain some temporary tax benefits but quality of life is hardly better.

Eu só nâo deixei nenhum comentário, aqui, directamente a essas pessoas, porque senti-me constrangido (como português - de gêma, que sou!) ao me deparar com as tristes verdades (negativas) que essas pessoas (que sâo todos, cidadâos estrangeiros, de alto grau académico e com alargada experiência em termos de relacionamentos inter-pessoais, com o povo de outros países, por onde essas mesmas pessoas já passaram) que aqui colocaram!... That’s actually quite a good idea! What are you mostly interested in when you say more conservative? I haven’t lived there, so I don’t have a first hand experience but I’ve been there multiple times. It’s definitely not as popular as Dubai (yet).

I agree I even prefer Malta in comparison even with the grey listing and construction I left Portugal and went to Malta. I am now in South Africa but I am also a citizen of Portugal but no way I am going back there. I will take my chances in crime infested Johannesburg but I prefer it than dealing with the mentality in Portugal.

I have lived in Malta, visited Turkey, Spain, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Germany, Serbia, France, UAE, Egypt, Bulgaria, UK, Mozambique, Reunion, Mauritius, Lebanon, New Zealand and USA and only encountered that sort of behaviour in Portugal both in Lisbon and Porto! Not to mention the old men spitting and taking a pee in the garden areas of the city is just not exactly appealing either. I am a citizen of Portugal too so I also understand what they say no not a good experience. I prefer to stay in South Africa or try my luck again in some other place in Europe but Portugal after dealing with that. No thanks!

Interestingly many of our clients are deciding between these two cities. At the first glance they couldn’t be any more different. However it’s important to keep in mind our audience and their incentives: taxes, ease of relocation, banking, openness to foreigners, etc etc.
