Muireann and Tommy are joined by DAA Media Relations Manager Graeme McQueen to respond to the weekend airport queues, security staff pay and the video that went viral of a fight in Dublin Airport last Wednesday.
Airport operator DAA responds to the enormous queues of 50,000 people from the weekend, many passengers missing their flights and the hours spent in queues after being told to arrive early.
An urgent meeting will take place on Monday between Dublin Airport officials and junior minister Hildegarde Naughton to discuss the issue.
Graeme hopes that the situation will be rectified for the June Bank Holiday weekend next week. He states that from what he saw on Sunday, there could be recommendations to arrive 4.5 hours before long-haul flights.

I don’t understand why in such emergency circumstances they don’t have special queues only for people whose flight is within the next hour ?

Full of crap and nonsense... Employ more people and give better working conditions, and contracts... Of course it will happen again... And if you need compensation, please do contact DAA...

I wouldnt recommend contacting the Daa for compensation as you simple wouldnt get what your owed and compensation. I'd get a solicitor and sue them in court for all costs, your flight, holiday or hotel loss, transport, food bills, stress and anxiety, failure to completely there contract with you as your airlines paid them a fee from your ticket for you to use the airport. Absolutely everything.

@@godessunivers6941 What planet are you on. Amsterdam has told the airlines to cancel 20% of their flights. Charled de Gaule was in mayhem on Saturday. A person I know landed at 9.30am and it took most of the day to get out of the airport. CDeG was worse than Dublin for the return flight. Airports in Britain are in mayhem. There is a video of the pilots of one flight loading the baggage in to the plane due to the lack of baggage handlers.

@@godessunivers6941 Just after seeing a news article about long queues in Stockholm airport. Again the cause is a shortage of security staff. Stockholm estimates that there will be long queues until the end of the summer. People are doing their jobs in very difficult circumstances.

Pay the staff a proper wage and there won't be a problem with staff end of story, there happy to rob everyone with extortionate prices with food, car rentals, parking e.g, but providing a quality service is just not possible and blame the staff that ye don't want to pay an decent wage, not the CEOs fault of course image poor fell.

Unfortunately it's not just a wage issue. Since Covid it seems that people don't want to work in jobs that have early mornings or late evenings. They all want jobs that will allow them work at home. Look at how many have left the pub and restraunt trade. Look for a taxi outside the airport. There was an article in the Guardian newspaper a couple of weeks ago about security work in Stanstead Airport. Interesting read. The money was only a small part of why people were leaving. The biggest issues were the anti social hours and the work itself- standing most of the time or either looking into x-ray machines and continually dealing complaining people who have issues with everything. These queues are not unique to Dublin. I spoke to someone who flew from Dublin to Charles De Gaulle on Saturday. It took from 9.30 to well into the afternoon to get out of CdeG. For the return flight the airports in Paris were in mayhem- worse than Dublin. I can only imagine what it's going to be like in places like Spain over the summer months

What he is saying as an explanation doesn't make sense from the information they have as is there business of and airport operator and there own recommendations already given publicly. They know months in advance how many people are flying so they failed to hire enough staff in time. Their fast track lane I've heard is 2.5 hours long and is closed for new books currently ( ive tried to get one) so basically there is no fast track atm. I'd love to see the 5000 job applications if they really exist and even though the t&c of there most recent job offers have improved from what they offered a few months ago there still not good for the serious job of security at a nation airport. This guy is desperately on a mission of danger control when its to little to late (irony).

Who gave a child with stubble a job. Why is he answering the questions. Early presentation!!!!!°° Now he blames the passengers.....No seats, chairs, benches to sit down. If some one needed to go to the toilet, take medication, bad back, couldn't stand.....we made a decision as an airport!!°°°°°!!!!! To get someone with a yellow visor to walk around call out with a blower anyone for flight 435 to Heathrow leaving at 4 o' clock go to gate 43 now leave the queue.......Simple

Article in the Guardian newspaper a couple of weeks ago about why people don't want to work in airport security in Stanstead - anti social hours, constantly standing, stress from constantly dealing with the public (which I know from experience can be trying). People have left to go to other jobs with less money but better hours, less stress etc. You can replicate that article for any major airport now. Most employers especially those in hospitality are finding it extremely difficult to get staff at the moment.

Here is some genuine information why this particular day was so chaotic..Even one of the DAA staff alluded to it but did not expand..What day did this happen on? Oh yeh.. Sunday morning..it was down to ABSENTEEISM..pure and simple..The basic amount of staff rostered for this particular day and no more..add in the fact that Dublin airport failed a european led security audit, where ‘mock’ gun(s) & banned items were successfuly brought through security by european inspectors only recently, means the security at Dublin airport is under pressure. Absenteeism is caused by many things, being rostered to start in the middle of the night, on a Sunday morning IS a contributing factor, rightly or wrongly...Please don’t bleat at me with your comments, write to the DAA asking why this happens and question them why staff don't turn up. P.S. Absenteeism happens to other companies all over the airport at weekends, the DAA are not unique in this situation, they just got more exposure.

@John Brennan I don't know the internal workings of the security in Dublin Airport. I'm simply stating what was reported. Maybe the stand by crew did eventually show in. I would assume that it would take some time to contact them and to show in. According to one of the travel experts - when you lose staff early in the day and queues start developing its very hard to recover. By all accounts the airport is running very well this morning with reports of queue times being normal.
@frankryan3294
@frankryan3294 2 жыл бұрын
@John Brennan Quite possibly. I was just thinking 17 people absent would the equivalent of closing possibly 3 - 4 security lanes. It also seems 17 is a very high percentage of sick absences out of rostered staff of 100+
