I've been to Ireland, riding their trains before, but I've never had the chance to ride on the "flagship" hourly service that runs between Dublin and Cork.
It's the only Irish Rail InterCity train that features a 1st Class option, so it would be rude not to try it out! I'm sure it won't leave me feeling blue, will it...
Departure: Dublin Heuston, Ireland
Destination: Cork Kent, Ireland
distance: 266km / 165 miles
Duration: 2 hrs 35 mins
Cost: Advance adult single 1st class €45,49 / £39.60. (Std class €30,99 / £27.00)
Date of Travel: April 2023
Operator: Irish Rail / Iarnród Éireann
motive power: class 201 diesel locomotive. Built: Genral Motors, Canada (1994-1995)

It's time for Ireland to use some of its billions of multinational tax revenues. They should secure some of the land along the old closed routes, and at least indicate that no new planning permission will be granted. Then some upgrades to lines, speed them up, improve parking and transport to stations. Lastly some new rolling stock. Plan some new lines, from Rosslare along the south coast to Cork and out towards Bantry, between other towns across the country.

Indeed they should. And there is quite a lot of that in the all Ireland proposal for rail that's just been published 👍 Thanks for watching 👍

There's a long standing loophole for first class fares on this route where if you purchase a second class fare and upgrade it to first class afterwards, it is cheaper than buying the first class up front.

I agree with you, as a regular user of the Dublin to Cork service, the first class is definitely not up to standard. Irish Rail have recently introduced a quiet coach which I have used and found it very comfortable and enjoyable trip even though it is standard class. Your videos are great and your knowledge is brilliant.

Some Dublin-Cork services are on 22000-class sets, which are newer, but I still much prefer the older loco-hauled CAF Mark-4 trains for several reasons. 1) Mark 4 coaches don't have the diesel-hydraulic motive power underneath every coach, which is really loud on 22000 coaches when starting from a stop, 2) the Mark 4s don't have the annoying resonant vibrations you sometimes get at lower revs on the 22000 coaches, 3) when you reserve a seat on a Mk 4 you always know whether you face forwards or backwards, unlike on 22000s, 4) the Mk 4 trains offer one "quieter coach". The Mk 4 blue tint doesn't bother me. Also, a food and beverage trolley service has been offered on the Dublin-Cork service for a while now.

Yes, reducing engine noise is definitely a benefit of the loco hailed service, although I do still enjoy riding the 22000s. I did like the term "quieter coach" that IÉ use as it is practically more sensible than the term "quiet coach" that we have in the UK. ...but I'll never like the blue windows! As a train lover Ireland is really not the best place for it, I'm always so envious of train networks when I'm abroad, very interesting to get a outside perspective. Will definitely be looking at your other Irish videos. I've gotten the train between Cork and Dublin a few times but I have to say I much prefer my regular journey which is Cork to Tralee. The countryside between Mallow and Tralee is much more interesting to look at and the Mallow-Tralee trains are quite comfy - though they offer no first class, something I've never bothered with. I do have to get the Dublin train as far as Mallow, which is fine - much preferred to the two times I've hopped on one of the commuter trains between Cork and Mallow.

My late father used to be one of the drivers on the Cork - Dublin run back in the 1970's. It was a 3 hour run back then. No second driver on the footplate. He used to load up in one of the pubs across the road before hopping over to board the already parked train. Being a first class driver as he said, someone else done the shunting/parking. I think he would have failed a breath test if they existed then but he always arrived in Dublin bang on time at midday.

They just introduced etickets to Irish Rail recently, so you don’t have to print it out anymore - you get a qr code on your phone. About time I say. I commute every day on the train (Galway line) and there’s major issues around there not being enough capacity on the trains. The main station in Galway (Ceannt), while looking nice on the outside, leaves a lot to be desired; they don’t even have styles (just someone who opens and closes a gate). Ceannt station is undergoing renovations, however, so it should improve in the next couple of years…
@JohnnyHooverTravels
@JohnnyHooverTravels 4 ай бұрын
I did see on someone else's video that e-tickets were now being read at the electronic gates. That's an improvement because picking up actual tickets from the machines is such a faff. I also agree whole-heartedly that Galway station looks grand enough from the outside, but the interior and the passenger facilities now leave something to be desired for such a well-used terminal. Thanks for watching and providing the extra information 👍

Nice vid. Thanks for sharing. Since you're British, I think it would only be fair to give a like for like comparison with a similar UK rail journey. For example, Paddington to Cardiff. The saver single is around the same price as you paid for your first class ticket. I know from experience that in standard class you are regularly standing until at least Reading. The price of the cheapest first class advanced ticket is nearly 90 quid! Overall, I think Iarnród Éireann provide a much better experience, with much more value for money than you get on any UK operator. Also, a tip just in case you or any of your viewers are making this journey in the future, in either direction. If you book online and choose Galway - Cork, or vice versa, you can get a single for under 15 euro! It's an anomaly that I've exploited many times. Although, make sure the ticket is via Dublin, not Limerick. Happy travels 👋

Yes, I see what you mean wrt the comparison. but I was still underwhelmed by the 1st Class experience, although I suspect I would have been kinder if I'd paid a bit less and gone 2nd Class without such expectations. All in all, I've enjoyed pretty much every trip I have taken on IÉ and I agree that the prices and standards are generally excellent. although other local commenters have mentioned that reliability and timekeeping and overall journey times are not what people would wish. Thanks so much for the tip. I'm not surprised to hear that Ireland, just like here in the UK, has some pretty anomalous pricing structures! Thanks for watching and for the comment 👍

Last time I've done that journey was pre Covid and had a full dining car service on certain services plus a buffet, the food was excellent not too expensive. If not travelling in first then the quiet carriage is less crowded but use of devices is restricted to switching any sound off including any beeps and no talking on phones. Seat reservation was mandatory for that carriage then as peak time services were busy. Advisable for all services anyway in standard.

I took the 1st class last night from Cork to Dublin, as it was a small price difference & I wanted a quiet trip after a long day. I would agree with you that it isn’t worthy of being called 1st class service. The one good thing was that I pretty much had the carriage to myself:). But the bathroom in 1st stank badly and it wasn’t even cleaned before the journey. The bins weren’t emptied either, so I had to stuff my items in the vestibule bin, which was also fairly full. I noticed several seats were frayed and my table light didn’t work. I found my seat surprisingly hard & uncomfortable and I ended up moving somewhere else. I will go with a standard quiet carriage the next time. Irish Rail need to pull their socks up.

Considering the match day traffic, I suspect that the pricing reflected heavier demand. Just checking Irish Rail for a random weekend in a few weeks (as it would have been a weekend journey here), I can see that the standard fares are all lower than quoted on-screen (non flexible tickets are €21.49 and semi-flexible tickets (plus or minus one train of that stated on your ticket) between €24.99 and €31.99. Good luck trying to get the distance in this video in GB at those fares with any flexibility in trains used. I also checked and the 1st class fare quoted on screen is the maximum price (some are at €42.49), so it really looks like he just picked a busy weekend for travelling this route, so prices are slightly elevated.

I see the Mark 4s haven't changed since I was on them last. They were a disappointment from the start, the ride quality was (and possibly still is) inferior to the BREL Mark 3s that they replaced.

I travel this route regularly. The only thing wrong is your camera. The blue tinge is nothing like that. There's another example of a keyboard warrior. Also the upholstery is now upgraded and qr tickets are available.

I am mostly positive about the trips I take but I was genuinely disappointed with my experience on the train that day. The blue tint was very noticeable to me and the view was quite reflected, I would say, by what my camera recorded. However, I am more than happy to hear that your experience, as a regular traveller is much more positive. It is also great to know that the upholstery has now been updated . And I also hear from other commenters that a catering offering has now been reinstated. I can assure you that every other journey I took in Ireland was great, so do have a look at some of those too, so you can be assured that I'm not on here just to knock everything. Maybe it is time i returned to Ireland and give this train another go. In the meantime, thank you for sharing your opinions and also for watching the video. 👍

I think there needs to be a moderately high-speed line the whole length of the weat coast ... The Wild Atlantic Railway. And it should connect Cork, Shannon and Knock Airports. This would spark further investment and avoid everything getting concentrated around Dublin.

The blue tinted windows, the crumbs on the seat, the rather boring countryside, the whole tired look of the train and no catering ("We''ve not put it back since Covid") - don't appeal. The train ride to Galway or Sligo is far more interesting, and from my experience, the train was far better. Thumbs definitely down for this trip!

Hopefully just "thumbs down" for the journey itself and not my video 😉 tbf on Irish Rail, there was already some limited catering on other services (not mine) and I looked on their website and they are putting catering back now. However, the list of things offered is somewhat limited still. But apart from that, I agree that it is not the nicest ride I have had in Ireland for either comfort or views out of the window. More to come from this trip to Ireland and I can confirm that "things can only get better" as the song says! Thanks so much for watching and commenting 👍

I think the issue in Ireland is that traffic volumes are too low to justify the cost of electrification. Local services around Dublin are electrified, as is the LUAS tram system.

2023, and it still hasn`t dawned on Irish rail, that many visitors to Ireland from multiple foreign countries, do not speak the English language, or have a rudimentary understanding of it, and some of them actually travel on their trains .... all their pre-recorded on-board announcements are either in English or the Irish language, take it or leave it !!! Did anyone ever `` think`` to add pre-recorded announcements in Spanish ?? [ a very widely-spoken World language ] Mediocre customer -care, as per usual......

Co-incidentally, I lived /worked in Britain for a few years, until 1992 , and worked on B.R. on part of the `` Network SouthEast``area. Ireland has been in the E.U. for a long time now --I`ve travelled by rail, in some European countries, notably Spain and Italy -- they have notices and announcements in their native language AND English, which is really helpful if you`re not fluent in their language/s..takes a lot of stress out of things, especially if you have to change trains some place, to complete your journey... for the pretty `` limited`` network of lines in Ireland, it wouldn`t take much effort to at least `` try`` to accommodate European union /South American visitors-- if the Spanish can do it, it should be done here. Thanks for your reply and I`ve enjoyed some of your Videos... keep up the good work !@@JohnnyHooverTravels

You learn english in school in most countries, especially inside the EU, in most other ones you learn french, and in many you can learn both. If you visit a country, arrive with some knowledge of the language or don't come in the first place. And before you come at me, I absolutely think in the opposite case - as in going to a country with another language - especially if you already grow up with English as your first language, you should know the basics in the official language because that is basic respect to the local population. Also, i am not from an english speaking country either. But when you are the one visiting, put in the effort and learn what you need beforehand, it's not the job of Iarnród Éireann to add more languages than their own ones in announcements.
