Dubois Depraz, Modular Chronographs & Modular Movements: Are they any good?

ETA & Sellita are the biggest names in movement manufacturing, but there's another name that dominates the industry - Dubois Depraz. Specifically, Dubois Depraz are the kings of movement modules - making components for Audemars Piguet, Richard Mille & IWC just to name a few. We've talked about in house movements, we've talked about popular outsourced movements such as the ETA2892 or the Valjoux 7750, but what about the gray area in between? What about modular movements that are half in-house movement, half outsourced?
Today I'll talk about what a modular movement is, what the advantages & disadvantages to a modular movement are, and I'll be using the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore (Manufacture Calibre 3126/3840 with a Dubois Depraz chronograph module) and the Ulysse Nardin Marine Diver (ETA 2892-A2 with an in-house Power Reserve module to make the UN-26) as examples of the pros & cons of movement modules & modular chronographs.

What do you think of modular movements for watches? Do you prefer them vs. a fully in-house or a third party movement?would the cost savings be enough for you to buy one over an integrated chronograph? Let me know what you think in the comments section.

I've got the ETA 2824 with the dubois depraz 2025 module movement its just now being sent in for it's first service after 14 years. I don't like how the date wheel looks like it's far down into a tunnel. Absolutely no problems finding a qualified watchmaker to service it. $480 for a complete service.

Thank you very much for this video! Was close of getting a chronograph from Ball (ETA 2824-2 with Depraz module) and as I wish to keep my watches I don't want to hassle when it comes to servicing. Again many thanks!

Very interesting, I came into your video since I just bought a vintage Tag Heuer 2000 chrono di dubois depraz and it's true: the crown is much higher compared with the buttons as well as there's a cyclop inside the date. But that it's one of the reason I love this watch :)

Oh nice! Some of those early Tags are actually really cool & its an interesting part in the company history. Great watch :)

My Heuer 2000 chrono with this movement doesn't run unless the chronograph is running. It's pretty odd as you would think the dd module would add not remove drag. I am aware that this problem is not unique. Unfortunately the DD module is usually replaced rather than serviced but apparently not easy to source.

Inciteful stuff. I knew some of this, but your video definitely hit on some things I hadn’t realized or understood. Always nice learning something new. I hate to sound like a sound like a buzz kill, but for I’m avoiding this whole debate by avoiding automatic chronographs altogther. I have zero interest in perpetual calendars and the like so it doesn’t apply. For now - if I get a chronograph - I’ll be getting a quartz. Although not planning on a chronograph anytime soon do by the time I do, might have a different take. Another vote against automatic chronograph movements (and especially modular ones) they are very thick. Quartz aren’t. That said with a three-handed I’m picking an automatic every time.
@ShahLusso
@ShahLusso 3 жыл бұрын
Fair point, it's hard to find a good automatic chronograph that isn't too thick (unless you go very high end or get something with a Frederic Piguet 1185, but even those aren't exactly cheap either) so I can definitely understand the aversion to them, plus quartz has the extra precision to measure smaller fractions of a second that again you'd have to go much higher end for if you wanted a mechanical equivalent (i.e Zenith Defy 21, JLC Duometre etc).

can i ask a question? will a 2 in 1 movement like AP ROO Chrono has problem in long run? like a sudden non function chrono? perhaps a faulty gear (bridge??) that connected to the chrono movement? because honestly im considering to trade my pepsi ceramic rolex to an AP ( time to up the game and while i have the chance ) thank you in advance for your answer and great channel here.

I'd say more would be to do with the condition & care of the watch itself vs whether it uses a modular vs integrated movement - both designs have their own respective vulnerabilities, but especially when talking about something like a ROO Chrono, more important would be that it has good service history and that whoever's selling it to you backs it up with a solid warranty in case anything does go wrong. Going from a Pepsi into any chrono you'll really want to have that peace of mind because by comparison those Rolex GMT movements are simpler and pretty much bulletproof, vs chronos of all kinds which are more complex and have more parts - but if you find one that's been well taken care of then you should be fine. Hope that helps :)

Are flyback chronos usually DD? I would appreciate an answer.
@ShahLusso
@ShahLusso 3 жыл бұрын
For the most part no - the main Flyback chronographs that come to mind are all integrated chronograph movements (Breguet 582, Hublot Unico, Zenith El Primero 405, even the Audemars Piguet 4401 in the new Offshore & RO Chronographs is integrated too). I do believe DD does make a module that has flyback capability, but I can't think of any watches that come to mind that use it. Hope that helps :)

@@ShahLusso Thanks. There was a Maurice La Croix that has a DD module. This one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nqegoMSJmp2wdHk.html but according to this forum, the additional flyback stuff was done by Maurice La Croix itself: www.watchtalkforums.info/threads/just-arrived-maurice-lacroix-masterpiece-collection-flyback-chronograph.68674/ That gave me the impression that a lot of the more affordable Flyback auto chronos were DD.

cool stuff man. I'm trying to talk my brother out of buying a speedy reduced for this simple reason. I have heard they are very expensive to service and if he bought one it'd already be at least 20 years old probably.
@ShahLusso
@ShahLusso 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the price for the Speedy reduced is attractive both new & pre-owned because of the modular movement saving costs, but I'd say if your brother doesn't want to go for a full on Moonwatch with the 1861/63 movement then maybe opt for recommending a Speedmaster Date - that has a Valjoux 7750 base so that'd be even easier to get an independent watchmaker to service.

The ones made for the speedmasters fitted with the eta movement are complete garbage. Do not buy a speed master with that movement. It always fails and is very, very hard to take apart and put together. It’s garbage. Nothing more than a gimmick to make a thinner watch.
@bikeman123
@bikeman123 8 ай бұрын
I can't argue whether the dd module is garbage or not. they do save cost but they certainly don't make watches thinner. They are cheaper to replace rather than service.
