Her music and performances are legendary, with most other female artists stealing from her and some using her as a template for their entire careers. She is a legend & the queen of pop for a reason.

Ofra Haza was a star LONG before Madonna and for Madonna to rip her off seems disingenuous and shows that SHE is the copy-cat. It diminishes the legacy of the artists she co-opts. Ofra Haza was on the verge of her third comeback had it not been for her health failing her due to her AIDS-related illness (she contracted this through her idiotic POS druggie husband). Had Ofra not died, she would have had a career that spanned longer than Madonna's. I mean, I think Madonna is phenomenal, but let's be real here.

It's based on the Amida prayer "open my lips and my mouth shall praise You"; the 16th Century poem by Rabbi Shalom Shabbazi "Im Nin Alu" .. none of which madonna would know on her own.. she lifted MUCH of the work of both sages via her kabbalah studies and of course via the work of Ofra Haza whose version of Im Nin Alu was/is the definitive MODERN version and Madonna's stage version of this song with the woman in the cage comes from Ofra's "Mata Hari" video.

I don't rate this song as a classic Madonna track. She has written her biggest hits and produces many too. The songs that are most memorable are always credited to her and collaborators like Steve Bray, Pat Leonard and William Orbit. The chant in this song was also in a song with Sly & Robbie. It's hardly relevant that this song is sampled, because she's capable of & has delivered superior songs for decades.
