In this review, I'm going to take a look at a beer from Brouwerij Verhaeghe, and it's their Duchesse de Bourgogne, which is a Flanders Red Ale. This was one of the first-ever sour beers that I enjoyed, and it's been over five years since I've had it, so I thought it'd be a good idea to finally review this one. Let's see how it is!
Commercial Description:
Duchesse de Bourgogne from Brouwerij Verhaeghe is the traditional Flemish red ale. This refreshing ale is matured in oak casks; smooth with a rich texture and interplay of passion fruit, and chocolate, and a long, dry and acidic finish. After the first and secondary fermentation, the beer goes for maturation into the oak barrels for 18 months. The final product is a blend of younger 8 months old beer with 18 months old beer. The average age of the Duchesse de Bourgogne before being bottled is 12 months.
Pertinent Information:
Brewery - Brouwerij Verhaeghe (Vichte, Vlaanderen, Belgium)
Beer - Duchesse de Bourgogne
Style - Flanders Red Ale
ABV - 6.2%
IBU - 11
Bottled On Date - 02/09/23 (Just under 11 months old at the time of review)

~~~ Rodenbach Gran Cru was my first sour beer. Never in a million years did I think I would like it, but I did. Of course I was in Brugges, so that might have influenced me LOL. Years later I got to try the Duchesse and was once again surprised how much I enjoyed it. I had their cherry version a few years ago and it was also quite tasty. Great review. CHEERS !
Thanks, Gregory! I think we had a similar experience (outside of having it in Brugges). Every time I have it, I'm reminded how much of an idiot I am that I don't drink it more. So complex and tasty that it's absurd. I hope this review inspired at least one person to pick it up. Cheers, brother!
Love that this is so available and in a can now too. And in a mix pack with Echt Kriekenbier, Vichtenaar, and Barbe Ruby. All amazing the Duchess my favorite ages well too.
Yeah, this can definitely age quite well. I need to review the cherry and cherry chocolate variants of this one at some point, if I can find them. You're right about the brewery, in general. Cheers, Jeff!
Just had this beer for the first time this year. Been working with a contractor for the better part of the year who originally hails from Belgium and we became beer pals and traded a few bottles and this is one he said I should try. After the initial blast of "this is not a fruit smoothie puree sour" it really settled in nicely! It was a 750ml bottle and I drank half the first night and when I finished it off the next night, I was completely acclimated to it and enjoyed it even more! Incredible beer and I'll definitely be getting more of it. Cheers buddy 🍻
I saw your Untappd check-in and was curious as to whether or not you ever had it before. That is actually a really cool story. This is one of those beers that is a shock to the palate, but once you "settle in," as you said, I think it starts to shine. Awesome that you were able to not only enjoy it, but really like it. Another one of those beers I need to drink more often. Cheers, Mike!
Nice, Billy! It's a palate shock, but I still recommend trying it once. Even if you don't like it, it's still worth a shot. I hope you finally find a sour you can appreciate, haha! Cheers, buddy!
Such an excellent beer. Flanders Red ales are awesome and this is one of the best. Beer dork alert but that vinegar note is from acetobacter bacteria which is most present in this style, even compared to other Belgian sours. I think it’s what gives it its unique character though. Belgian style sours are just so complex and delicious compared to kettle sours to me. There are a lot of American breweries that are doing it right too I think.
That's what I'm talkin' about, Curtis! Always bringin' the knowledge in the comments section, even if it's super nerdy (which I appreciate). Yeah, I truly think some American breweries are kickin' out traditional sours like this. That said, this traditional beer is always delicious. Can't believe I don't do it more. Thanks, brother! Cheers!
@@averagejoe716 Hahaha. I am a beer nerd. I just can’t help it. You said it in your video but I do love how widely available this beer is for how good it is. Fairly easy to get a hold of.
I finally spotted this beer (at Total Wine), so I snagged a bottle out of a 4-pack as you had my interest piqued by this review weeks back. Opened it up tonight and just re-watched your review and you freakin' nail it, dude! The beer is so complex. The aroma somehow smells like a sour creme brulee (?) or a freshly baked pecan pie with tart berries or something. The flavor follows suit with that complex balance of sour and sweet. It's really damn good, dude. I appreciate the recommendation. It was actually $8.99 for this one 11.2 fl oz bottle, which is a little wild and I blame TW for their weird pricing on singles. But I could give two shits, it was very much worth a go and every penny. Cheers good sir!
Reading comments like this is exactly why I have fun with the channel. If I can inspire a single person to pick something up they've never had, or maybe it's outside their comfort zone, it warms my heart. It's even better when they like it. I could totally understand a tart mixed berry pie meets pecan pie tasting note, though. It's so complex that a review like mine doesn't even do it justice. I'm just so happy that you not only grabbed a bottle, but loved it as much as me, Rick! The price point is ridiculous, but as you said, it could just be TW. I do think four packs are much more reasonable than what I paid for a single, as well. Cheers, brother!
@@averagejoe716 Yessir! I had a deep sour phase for a few years that I kinda moved on from in the last handful o' years, for whatever reason. Not that I won't enjoy a tart/sour/gose type of beer time to time. But this one hit for me, no doubt. Honestly shoulda just grabbed the 4-pack, haha. Was way more economical and I'd love to have a few more around. Cheers dog!
A thought provoking beer.....not a good beer for a Superbowl tailgate party. I love this beer, and have no problem drinking a big bottle of this, but of course not a session beer.
Yeah, this is a beer you sit down and contemplate, without question. I could drink the big 750 ml, as I mentioned in the review, but that is about it. I don't think I'd need more. Delicious beer! Cheers, dude!
Traditional sours will always Trump micro bs sours in overall quality and drinkablity. Much like when US breweries try their hand at cask brews, just a shadow of the real deal that Europe can provide. But hey, that's just my opinion.
@averagejoe716
@averagejoe716 7 ай бұрын
I think it's a good opinion. While I enjoy the new age sours, including the heavily fruited ones (that you despise), I'm also somebody who appreciates classic beer. I think there's a lot of great US breweries that make some fantastic sour beers, but the classics never die, and something like this just sticks out because of its quality. There's room for all of it, IMO. I just need to drink (and review) more classics like this. So damn good! Cheers, Paul!
