In this video essay we will explore the grey area between Good and Evil. I will dive deep into the dark philosophy behind American Psycho, Breaking Bad, The Joker, Avatar and take you on a tour through the minds of so called "literally me" characters like Walter White, The Joker, Bruce Wayne, Zuko, Donnie Darko and many many more. Why is it that these characters so popular nowadays? Is there maybe something inside of us that is craving to embody the dark side?
Swiss philosopher Carl Jung made the distinction between The Persona and The Shadow Self.
The persona being our outward face we present to the world. And the shadow, our darker side, often left untouched…

My experience growing up in America is all about falling in line. Get the degree. Get the wife and two kids. Get the overpriced suburb home. Retire at 65. Die at 80. I knew even as a kid I didnt want that life. So that decision to be different led to many relatives and people close to me treat me like an outcast. Being a 30 year old singer-songwriter with life goals of living off the land as much as possible, Im pretty out there especially for my age group. I can relate so much to these "literally me" characters bc they embody what's missing in that "perfect American life"... FREEDOM!!!

Walter was originally an anti-hero because the intent behind his actions was to provide for his family (good man doing evil acts). He became a villain when he allowed his pride to consume him and that became his purpose. Mike lived and died an anti-hero. Mike understood the consequences of his evil and his inevitable demise but everything he did, he did for his daughter. Purpose, not action, is what separates a hero and a villain. You can have villains do great deeds and heros commit atrocities but it is the WHY that defines them.

This is why I'm very much in love with anti-heroes. My favorite anti-hero is The Punisher. So much so that I've even wrote a novella that stars a character who is very much like The Punisher but is also different in many ways. The character in question is named "Matt Santos." He's 24 years old and by the start of the story, he just left the Calivadan Army as a Ranger after 6 years of on and off deployments. Meaning he has seen his fair share of grisly action. But by this time after leaving the army, he just wants to rebuild his life with his family by catching up with his mom and stepfather. However he soon finds that his parents are not as happy as they were together from the last time he last saw them. And this becomes more complicated when the FBI shows up to his doorstep to interview his parents when he finds out that his mother believes she's being targeted by hitmen and in a scuffle of escaping, his stepfather tried to abandon her. All of this soon comes to a head when his mother is soon assassinated right outside of the courthouse and as a result, this left him traumatized and heartbroken. But what makes this even worse is a sympathetic FBI agent tries to help him with his case but her superiors shoot down the idea almost immediately. Which pretty much turns Matt Santos into a grieving mess when the agent tells him that there was nothing she could do even though she tried to push this case forward personally on his behalf. But what really pushes Matt over to the dark side was by overhearing a suspicious man spell out his mother's name and labeling her as a target. He figures out a way to lure the man into helping him, knocks him out cold, and takes him into his car to ask some questions. By the end of this questioning however, Matt shoots the suspect dead which effectively shows that Matt has fully embraced his darker side. However he does not let this go rampant. He knows who he has to shoot. However Matt soon comes into a whole new shocking revelation that somebody close to him (in his family) set up the entire murder. And after some convincing, the FBI agent Maria Garcia decides to help Matt in his revenge quest after finding out that her own employers were in on the action the entire time. And by that, they were paid off to literally not do anything. By the end of the story however, traitorous family member pays with their life by Matt Santos shooting him but realizing the consequence of his actions, Matt now knows he either has to turn himself in or go into hiding by staying outside of his country's borders. His choice was made clear to him after his FBI agent lady friend tells him that she won't take him in due to her disgust with the FBI's corruption. Matt and Maria get to know each other a little better (no dirty stuff though) but Matt's actions still catches up to him in some way: His face (not literal face; just him in full tactical gear) is now on the local newspapers. Which dubbed him as "The Road Ranger" in Spanish. Which by the way is the literal title of the novella. All of this aside, you really presented the idea of an anti-hero really well. And I totally agree with your assessment when you say as we grow older in life, we eventually realize that being wholly good has little to no intrinsic value. This does not mean however that we should become totally evil. Because life has shades of gray all over it.

I love anti-heroes as well. Not just because of their brutal nature, but also how they are like us. They represent real life humans.

Stanley Kubrick's characters: Alex DeLarge, Jack Torrance, and Private Pyle are villains for different reasons: Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange has a psychotic tendency to use violence against men and women with his fellow Droogies as it's his ultimate self. He uses the fake eyebrow as a play on femininity, mocking the softness he preys upon by directly reflecting the people who fear him. When he gets out of the prison, he's tormented and beaten to where he can't defend himself. Jack Torrance in The Shining was a teacher and then a writer because he beat up a student. He starts to go on a downward spiral in his mind because of evil spirits in the Overlook Hotel from past alcoholism, fears of becoming an abusive father, and past trauma. He hates his family and doesn't want anything to do with them. He then tries to kill Wendy and Danny because of the soul controlling him as well as Delbert Grady wants him to take his family out when he opens the storeroom door for Jack. Private Pyle from Full Metal Jacket didn't become a monster until the end of the first half of the film. He's trying to do right to become one of the Marines because of training from Sgt. Hartman and then gets lead by Private Joker's leadership. Once he realizes he turned into some Frankenstein monster for messing up and everyone else's mistakes, he then turns against Sgt. Hartman and shoots him but not at Private Joker as he knows Pyle and how to control him like an untamed beast. Pyle ends his life in front of him. The overall part is how you can control the monster to win the battlefield in the mind.

EDIT: First off- this video is excellent. Very well crafted. Not many ppl can discuss this in such a way you have done. Thank you for your craft🙏🏻🔑. Within the spiritual realm of Wicca, pagan, astrology etc (meaning outside of western Christian beliefs), we discuss a lot about this. It can be referenced as “the dark night of the soul” or similar phrases and processes. Meeting your “shadow self” and accepting it for what it is, is not a thing within western ideology. It is only when you meet this shadow self, accept it and understand it, are you able to harness both within your identity in everyday life; utilizing this knowledge in all of your decisions and life, whilst understanding that one or the other takes a little more precedence in different situations. When you compare the way the universe works- with both light and dark energies, humans have the ability to do the same. What I think these types of films are capturing, is a millennia of the human race being told “only good is acceptable” and battling with “one or the other”, when really, you CAN balance both. You don’t have to be “all good” or “all bad”. And please don’t take this out of context, people. I’m not suggesting whatsoever, it is ok to hurt ppl. Also, mental health is a BIG issue within capitalistic society which is another beast in itself. Hope what I said makes sense❤

Great video! I’d love a video on either The Lighthouse or Trainspotting. I have my thoughts on Patrick Bateman. I think Patrick Bateman didn’t face the shadow, nor repress it, nor looses to it; He becomes his shadow, his desires become an usual, his lust for killing are what was his shadow, but Patrick loves himself, and loves how everyone loves him, if they don’t or if they do in a way that break Patrick’s brain crafted he’ll “kill” them. In his mind he eliminates them, but behind him, his shadow is simply not seeing these people, they’re not dead, they’re simply not there.

I think you need to see American Psycho again. Patric Bateman suffers ( he is in deep pain, as he himself say several times). The suffering come from his deep rooted narcissistic personality dissorder. The dissorder splits his mind into a inferiority complex, that he hides under a mask of superiority. He has no « self», only masks, and has nothing inside to love. He is a tragic character, that strives for perfection. To impress people who don’t know him, and who are also consumed by narcissism. That is they don’t fucking care. His real name is « Mr narcissist», behind the mask of Patric Bateman. A tragic and deeply unhappy and crazy person, with zero self love. To feel powerfull he needs attention from people he looks at as " lesser", like prostitutes. And if his inferiority complex triggers ( narcissistic rage), then the only way for him to cool down is to kill, torture, rape and so on. And as he say his pain is constant and sharp. And there is no escape

Control is the hard part for me I would say, it's a small word with a big meaning.

This video completely misunderstands what anti-hero means, basically leaving out the "hero" part of anti-hero. Antiheroes are defined as being a hero lacking some heroic qualities, or a character with villainous traits, that still has heroic ones, or is a hero at core. You instead seem to confuse this with being likable or sympathizable. 1) Walter is not an antihero, he's just a villain protagonist. He originally claims to do things for his family, but eventually admits he did it all for himself. He sold crystal meth, indirectly killing many, while directly murdering multiple invididuals himself, alongside orchestrating many more killings. There is no heroic motivation, or heroic methods. 2) Similar things apply to bateman, except hes just a full murderous psychopath. Nothing heroic about him. He preaches things because he guesses its the acceptable thing. He believes none of it. 3) The joker is a tiny bit closer, but still just a villain. Arthur acts in his own self interest the entire film. You can argue his critique of the society is valid, but that doesnt mean he does it out of care for others. 4) Batman isn't an antihero, he's just a paragon hero. Dressing in black doesn't change that his goals are heroic and his methods are too. Saying he's doing it out of revenge is an uncommon interpretation, it's usually more about helping prevent it for others. You seem go on a lot about the shadow, but that's one schema for how humans work, not some scientific fact. More importantly, this applies to real people. Fictional characters are not that. Reading shadow theory into fictional characters is pointless, unless it was intentionally written in it.

Hence why they almost always have some monolog about rationalising their actions being righteous and just. It gives a nice little dilemma. Usually before they go back to committing evil acts again.

We are taught as kids in media and entertainment that there is only good and bad, hero and villain. But the truth is us humans are very complex and there is no one all good or all bad, we are all a shade of grey.

The powerful status quo are also naturally virtuous in media whilst the weak are naturally deserving of their fate, trying to change the state of things is "evil". The Rulers and the Ruled is seen as natural.

I wish I could give multiple likes because you explained really well how many fictional characters helped me understand parts of myself and gain control of my dark side. Now I let it express itself when I want to help the real me deal with hard things of life kinda like if I weaponised it for self defense. I always believed that we all have a dark side that can go out of control and cause damage when being rejected or left unsupervised.

Love seeing Donnie Darko clips anywhere anytime ❤ Leon the Professional too. Also I find it funny my favorite movies are always listed in these Literally Me videos. Fight Club, American Psycho, Donnie Darko, American History X, Boondock Saints, and Joker. Fight Club especially. Idk if I love that movie for 20 years bc it spoke to my personality or if liking it helped carve my personality.
