I know Fred is young and still in training and the best training strategy is to keep it fun for him for him to have the drive but when you say the same command several times its actually teaching him to ignore your commands. I recommend giving him a command once that you know he can hear and certainly no more than twice then a mild tone or correction. You also don't need to tell him to come or HERE on his way back with bird unless maybe its a large goose obstructing his vision he is going to come back since he really has no other choice. Only give here command if he strays significantly. A dog whistle would also help. Keep up the great videos.

I like mixed bag duck hunting the most myself. Mainly because you just never know what you might have come in!!

I grew up jump shooting all day at a refuge in California, wading ponds for eight to ten hours. The dog would be “dog-tired” at the end and sleep the entire time we cleaned birds and through the long ride home. Lots of mixed bags but lots of work.

Fred’s doing good. I would recommend working with him on his breaking as soon as you shoot. I would hate to a bad accident happen.

I lucked up and got a full blooded yellow lab this summer, for free. His name is Duke. He is real similar in color to Fred. He's been a natural with training, he comes from a really good line and it shows. Not many things stronger than the bond between a boy and his dog, and I also believe the bond between a hunter and his dog is the strongest. Glad to see Fred doing so well, I hope Duke will be just as good.

Last week we had almost a bag of mallards a crow and a dove

Great hunt. I will give you another Buddy story. The river we hunted is 50 ft deep in middle so when the dog steps off the bank he is swimming and Buddy was a big yellow lab and was a very strong swimmer. The river is about 100 yards across where we hunted cuz it was at a Y so it was wide and Buddy would retrieve them way out and never had an issue and back then there were no dog life jackets. Now you have a visual of our hunting area now the story. We shot some teal and one was still alive but very close to the blind so we could not shot it. I took Buddy out of his blind and sent him out and off he went. He got close to the duck and it would swim around him and then started diving but was too injured to stay under long. Buddy kept after him and by the way this was his second year. So he got up close to the teal and the teal went under water right in front of him and Buddy just slowly went down under the water and I freaked out and started to get out of blind to go rescue him but he came back up but without the duck. This went one for about three more times before ole Buddy went under and came back up with the duck. That is when I knew he was going to be a great river dog and he had no problem going under the water after the birds. I am ready for my new chocolate lab to get older and start getting out with me. She, Keeva, is 8 weeks and is very obedient and starting to retrieve but looses interest after two or the max of three retrieves. God Bless and keep em up my friend.

Oddly enough I shot my first drake bufflehead today too! Beautiful bird, the colors on its head is looks great in the sun.
