So best to just go 6" and not worry about if it'll be enough?

@@Victor-hc8xx If you're going through the trouble of ducting it 6" should be the minimum. 6" is good for 600 cfm and lots of range hoods these days do more than that.

You forgot to nail the pipe onto the roof, it supposed to stick out and then make two cuts on it and nail to the roof then put the vent cover over it

sorry did not show much footage of that but in the beginning of the video you see some of it. It's all straight 6in pipe from the ceiling drywall then have a slight elbow (theyre adjustable) then another straight section going directly to the vent. Just used flashing/roofing tape to attach everything together.

Yes overall it has 2 backflow flaps, one from the actual unit and one from the roof vent. I got the vent and ducts from home depot. They are 6 inches

I didn't put sealant on the bottom to prevent trapping excess moisture/water that might come from the duct. It's explained better in the "How to Vent a Bath Fan Through the Roof" by This Old House's video

I like the use of the safety harness also but that rope looks awfully long.

@@mikeslater6246, the rope is long so you can walk across the entire roof without the need for additional anchor straps at the ridge. It doesn't mean that's how far you would fall if you did fall. I don't know what the proper word is but the line has a brake device on it that you can adjust to limit how far you would fall.

Did you leave the red anchor installed on your roof for future use?

Was just a coincident. It shouldn't matter much as long as you have at least two layers of shingles on top of the vent

If you need to be precise, you can use a plumb bob.

For me I had the new range hood in place. Had to stand on either side of range hood and attach a felt to the end of a stick for center. Then crawl in attic drill felt mark.

So everyone is aware, what this guy did is not totally correct. I'm not putting him down or criticizing just pointing a few critical flaws. The pipe should be fastened inside the attic due to potential fire. When the vent needs to be cleaned the pipe could come loose letting the smoke vent inside the attic. The pipe should be directly connected to the vent then all seams should have foil tape around them. The pipe should have gone directly through the roof about an inch, 2 tab cuts made on opposite sides of the pipe then nail down the tabs to ensure the pipe is stable at the top or wrap a band around the pipe and nail the ban down, then crimp the pipe or the vent wont fit over the band. The vent should have ice shield underneath the vent 6"-1foot all the way around. If the pipe is secured to the vent caulk underneath the vent is unnecessary because he stuck the vent to paper. You should use roofing tar at room temperature, if the tar is too hot a big mess will be made. The tar goes on top of the vent but under the shingles. If you put a nail through metal 100% guaranteed that nail will leak. By using the roofing tar you create a very good seal with the nail and the metal and at the same time the shingles will have a very good seal to each other and the vent. Any nails that will be exposed should have a rubber washer then caulked over with culk that suits your area.

@@johnhammond2155 yes search on google for ice and water shield. Get an idea how to cover a vent with this ice and water shield and instead of using the caulking sealant which is a mess its easier to use the ice and water, plus it will last as long as the roof life. Caulking tends to give up especially getting hit by the sun everyday it will sooner or later give up and wake up with water in your house. So always take couple shingles or rows out to expose the area you have to work on. Lets say for the vent you have you need to take out at least 3 rows. Then cut your vent hole and remember your bottom shingle has to be covered a bit by the bottom of your vent that you are installing. So once the vent hole is cut and vent placed on his spot you nail the 4 corners and after you come and cover it around with ice and water shield. Obviously you have to trim it around. Then once this step is done you have to place the 3 rows you took off back on and again trim them around. And now you dont have any nails exposed and no caulking needed and you can sleep good at night by knowing you dont have to worry until the next roof change. I hope you understand my story if not i will post a video and probably tag you somehow if not keep an eye on my chanel i will post a video how its done.

I didn't want to take the risk. $100 reusable harness was worth the peace of mind. Also I got used to fall protection from work where anywhere 6ft and above we were required to use fall protection. One slip could lead to a major injury or death, near the edge or not. It's not necessary but I chose to use it and it's also up to you.

@@danielangeles86 OK fair. I did not know you were trained for that. Most people with no training would possibly put themselves in trouble. Let me explain: I have mountaineering and antenna tower climbing experience going back several decades. What I have observed is that people with no training 1) use harnesses as an excuse to be less vigilant to the point of putting themselves more in danger than necessary 2) they in fact stumble over the ropes and fall often, sometimes due to fatigue due to having to constantly relocating it. This roof looks easy enough that either one is unlikely. Just one more question, won't the screws used to fix the attachment create water entry points on a roof like this?

@@AlessioSangalli Perfectly understood. The screws were placed below shingles where the truss is so I removed existing before attaching the brackets then you nail them back on. Of course there's a chance of leaking but it depends on how careful you take off the shingles.
