It was New to me, in America (MA), but in the rest of the world, it's old hat. The inverter tech is kinda new. It makes MS units work better. Inverter MS units cost a little more, but the savings in power cost is amazing My older Sanyo inverter models cool the house easily, and can provide heat down to -15 C or 5 degrees F in the wintertime. I use two 24KHS72 units and my oil burner is rusting away. (Test it weekly). My real back-up heat never gets used. Three $20 electric space heaters.

the one they installed in our bedroom was a 1 ton heating & cooling we paid 1,500 dlls installed. not bad for the benefit that we enjoyed. they really do a decent job.

Brian's understanding of the relative cost difference between the mini-split and a forced air duct system as well as the overall effectiveness of the mini-split, was not very convincing.

If your architect designs this type of cooling system into your NEW house, I suggest getting another architect. The salesman suggests that homes with "a lot of architectural style" might benefit from these contraptions all over your house. Huh? These split systems are great for retro-fitted areas. Almost a necessary evil.

Is there a "portable" mini split system...one that you can use without all the mounting and installation? I live in an apartment with horizontally sliding casement windows. I would get a cheap regular A/C but then I have to construct a huge spacer. I've tried a portable and the performance is poor, they are noisy and smelly. What I really want is an air conditioner that I would sit entirely on my back patio (on wheels, no mounting) and just have these cooling and heating hoses come in through the sliding door (with a tall, narrow, spacer) -- the opposite of how a portable a/c works. It seems like they make it impossible if you want flexibility. Am I the only one who sees it this way?

this system is very old in our part of the world . i have rarely seen it anywhere in america though

ali lavasa It's popular in Mexico, although I don't know how the average Mexican can afford it, or if it's cheaper there, because here it's in the thousands depending on how many rooms you have.

question. why is it referred to as new technology? split systems have been around for years.

the room where i need the ac does not have direct wall to the outside,so i was thinking of cutting drywall ,go through wall and under the house to the outside unit ,about 40 feet total ,do you see a problem with that? thanks

What does the typical ductless mini-split system run on?.....110 or 220?

+Twister051 It depends on the manufacturer and the model. Most 9k and 12k btu units use 110 volts with the exception of Trane units, which use 220v.
