YEARS AGO, I met a owner/operator who had a sweet gig. He had a contract with one of the big ship companies at the Port of Oakland where he would pickup empty sea going containers at the port terminal & deliver them to customers to fill in Stockton Calif, 70miles then deadhead back to the port. He would make several trips each day. He had a special use permit to pull an extra long flat bed trailer so he could fit 2 containers a 20ft+a 40ft - 60ft overall. He was granted the permit because he was hauling them empty. Sweet deal, low weight = good mpg + low wear & tear on his equipment. The Achilles heel of these trucks was the shift linkage. These were all shift transmissions. The linkage was a nightmare. It would go DOWN thru the floorboard, then RIGHT to the RH frame rail turn and go BACK along the frame rail to mid trans then LEFT to the middle of the trans then DOWN into the trans. There were U Joints at every turn. Even with all fresh new & lubed U joints when you grabbed the stick it felt like you was stirring a big pot of soup. When worn you missed a lot of gears. Those were the days... !

I drove trucks back in the 80's. One company I drove for in Virginia, I had a CL 9000. Loved that truck, her name was "Roxanne"

The way that engine was idling, I'd be afraid to guess at the fuel mileage. I drove one of these Ford's over the highway "once'" , it was empty, and I wouldn't want that experience again, anytime soon. These C-600's were mainly for local hauling and city deliveries, I guess. Cool. I worked for a guy that had 2 setup as flatbeds we used them to haul tobacco.

Before I Cummins swapped mine it got 2.5-3 mpg empty with the original 389.

Those things are like a gremlin. So ugly that they are good looking in a way. I've got a old AMC Gremlin Demon with the 340 in it. I rebuilt it when I got her and painted her Plum crazy Purple with Slime Lime Green racing stripes and old school factory rally rims. She gets a lot of looks. Most of them are like WTF is that but she's mine. And I have always liked the kinda odd vechiles. Got a old 71 AMC Javelin that's complete but not running in the spring when I can get to her she's coming in the shop for a frame off rebuild and restore to original. Silver with black stripes and highlighted under body. Im putting a little more metal flake in the paint than AMC did but im not going to tell anyone.
