This is the time of the fallow deer rut in Central Europe. If you go mushroom picking in the deciduous forests at this time, you may have heard a strange hoarse sound that resembles a loud and repeated... burping. It's the vocal utterance of the European fallow deer defending their territory, and is technically known as groaning. The sound itself is produced by the rapid inhalation of air, which agitates the fallow deer's vocal cords. Compared to the thunderous roar of the red deer, it may sound a bit muffled. But trust me, if you get pretty close to a groaning fallow deer, its deep voice will vibrate right through your bones.
In conclusion, I would like to advise caution for the days ahead when returning home from the bar. Don't let the hunters mistake you for a groaning fallow deer after a few pints.
