A lot of people have tried breathing exercises to reduce their anxiety. However, in my experience, many fall short because they don't actually PRACTICE their breathing as a skill. That is a mistake. In this video, I explain why.

Guys guys, REMEMBER you ARE okay! Everything's fine when ur having an anxiety, always keep that in ur mind it will calm you down. Ur gonna freak out a bit panic, but repeat in ur head "don't think, don't think, you're fine, your fine." And also try to get some fresh air. I'm having it rn. And i am trying to stay strong.

I am facing the same issue since last year once I had been to emergency dr were like everything is normal . The breathlessness doesn’t seem to go away even if I m not thinking. There were two or three times where i abruptly woke up in the middle night was gasping for air I thought I had sleep apnea but my dr doctor told me that it’s due to anxiety

Everything has a root cause some times we don’t know or can remember what caused it and now your mind is doing that uneven breathing pattern subconsciously to the point we’re u ask yourself why do I feel like I’m not breathing right or feel like I can’t catch my breath or I’m not getting enough oxygen when I’n reality your taking in more oxygen then what you need there for you have to train your mind again how to breath properly until your mind starts doing it again subconsciously if that makes any sense.

I think another reason why some people don't think breathing works is because they don't understand what effect its actually going to have on the body, from a scientific perspective. When I first heard about breathing to calm anxiety, I thought people meant it as some kind meditation (which it can be), like counting to 10 or counting sheep...I thought it was something unrealistic and ineffective. But the 4-7-8 breathing technique actually increases oxygen levels (or decreases them I forgot), so the calming effect is coming from something chemical going on in the body, rather than from any mental effort or willpower (which is probably what some people think you mean when you say 'breathe' to them to help them calm them down). It doesn't feel like you're achieving anything at first because the panic will have you believe that nothing will happen. But it is effective, you just have to force yourself to do it. If you can change your physical symptoms (like lack of oxygen, or rapid heart rate), that will in turn change your emotional and mental state. Just my 2 cents on the topic!

I have been practicing the 478 breathing excersize for about a week now. I'm still really struggling with the 4 second inhale. I can get about 2 to 3 sometimes 4 seconds at the moment but the inhale still feels very forced to me. I'm hopeing with more practice I will get better at this! I think it has some potential for me. I think I need to focus more on the breath as well. I find my mind wandering into health anxiety thoughts and worrying to much and that shows that I'm not focused on the breath enough. I also sometimes wounder if smokeing could have damaged my lungs to some degree and is makeing some of these breathing excercizes harder for me to do. I kinda doubt it though as I only smoked for about a year. I quit about 3 months ago so hopefully it goes away. I still think most of it is anxiety though! Thanks for the vid man! I will keep all of this in mind!

@Dc_wallets my anxiety is really bad. Is affecting my normal life, I’m always thinking of my anxiety sometimes I think if this really is anxiety since I never experience this is really difficult. How did you overcome this?
@dc_wallets
@dc_wallets 3 жыл бұрын
@@Mario-8924 I wouldn't say I have overcome my anxiety. But I have found alot of things that help. Breathing excersizes have actually been one of the things that have helped me the most, but it took me awhile to get the hang of it. I have also found that destractions can help but some can also make it worse. For example watching to much news and political stuff makes me more anxious, but sitting down and playing some video games or working on a project or something usually decreases my anxiety. So try to find positive destractions and incorporate those into your day when you have the time! Keep yourself busy! I also get the feeling sometimes that my anxiety isn't actually anxiety, and I get so in my head. But thats what destractions help with. I'm not sure what type of anxiety you are experiencing, but if its health related I suggest going to the doctor. If they say its anxiety then its most likely just anxiety! I also do alot of self research, and sometimes that can help. But you have to be careful not to over do it. If you research a specific thing that is causing your anxiety to much, or are looking in the wrong place sometimes your mind will come up with other things to worry about. So just be careful! Also excersize is great! Journaling or just writing down my thoughts helps with my anxiety as well. It helps me view it from a different angle sometimes and figure out what is actually causing my anxiety. It can be very hard to figure out sometimes though. Those are just a few things that pop into my head, I'm sure I have alot more but I use these the most! I hope this helps. I'm no expert but they help me! Good luck man, and I'm sorry for the long ass comment! 😂

@duffthepsych
@duffthepsych 6 жыл бұрын
gabrielle1999105 good question. I have pretty severe asthma, so I can relate to a small extent. I think the practice aspect of it matters even more to you because you may need to take slower, more shallow breaths rather than full deep breaths (just one possible example). For you it may also he important to practice exposure and teach yourself that feeling out of breath does not necessarily indicate anxiety

Duff The Psych Thank you! I appreciate your input! I practice mindfulness, but not enough, and you’re so right, practice is everything. I find sometimes I have to really think about what’s going on to distinguish between hypoxia and anxiety. I use O2 at 6 liters, and and I carry an oximeter with me. I will make this technique more of a habit! You are full of wisdom and I’m grateful for your channel! 😊

This video was posted 3years ago but if anyone can answer me please do so.so I'm 15yrs old and I suffer from bad anxiety,I can't sleep sometimes and there are all these thoughts that scare me..I want to know if what I experience is anxiety or something else.i started having these 'breathing problems' when I was 10 or 11,I've been dealing with this for like 4-5 yrs straight. No break..every second,minute,hour,day,month, year.. I feel like I'm forcing myself to breathe or if I don't have enough oxygen..that if I were.fall asleep my breathing would stop since I'm not there to control my breathing. I feel horrible that sometimes I cry myself to sleep,sometimes when I talk I need to gasp for air because it feels like I used way too much oxygen. I easily run out of breath..well that's what it feels like. I've talked to my doctor and teachers yet they both say it's anxiety, I've always been healthy but..this thing doesn't feel like anxiety at all. Maybe it is but I'm just scared..please if someone has the same problem reply to this please.
