The "what, like it's hard?" line is an extra burn when you realize he was put on the waiting list at first and his father had to call in a favor, so in fact, yes it was hard for him. Also, it's unfortunate that Warner says he needs a Jackie and not a Marilyn. Marilyn Monroe was really smart and really progressive for her time. People just underestimated her, but maybe that was the point the writers were trying to make.

The counselor said she needed at least a 175 to get in. The LSAT question we heard was a real sample question from the actual test. This is one of the few instances that implements the "study with distractions" method, and it pays off. Basically: never try to study quietly. It'll do nothing but make it worse for when you take the actual test. You study with distractions, anything quieter will feel like a piece of cake. And on the flip side: if it is noisy, now you're used to it. And as for her score: A perfect score is a 180. And she got a 179.

One thing I like about this movie which was and still is something you never see in romantic comedies like this is that there was no bitchiness between any of the female characters. Even the ones that you think are going to be awful to her in the end come around. All the girls and older women in this movie end up being super supportive of each other. Even Elle's sorority sisters, even tho they don't really understand the legal things Elle gets involved with, still end up super supportive of her and even show up at the trial at the end to be there for her. The women at the mani-pedi place are all supportive of her and she in turn is supportive of the older women there. The female professor even ends up being supportive of her. It's so rare to see a movie like this where there just isn't any tearing down of other female characters to prop up our main character.

Something that a lot of people miss: when Warner asks about the costume, Elle pointedly does not throw Vivian under the bus, and just says she did it on her own. It's Vivian fault and she's Warners fiance, but she STILL didn't tell on her.
@miriam8376
@miriam8376 Ай бұрын
Exactly. Elle Leads by example. Warner talks about needing a Jackie, but Elle had all the class in the world already. She’s not about to tear someone down over a man-not because Vivian deserves it necessarily, but because Elle is better than that.

One thing that makes Warner even WORSE is notice he took her to a public place, and a FANCY RESTAURANT at that to break up with Elle. This is because he didn't expect her to make a scene. Good for her for not falling into that trap and letting him have it right there and then and embarrassing him.

Trivia: The actor playing "Dorky David", whom Elle slapped in order to help him 'get some', is Oz Perkins, son of legendary Anthony Perkins, better known as "Norman Bates" from Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" (1960). Anthony was actually gay, but in order to fend off accusations that were costing him roles he married at age 41 and had children.

To prepare for her role as Elle Woods, Reese Witherspoon spent two weeks studying the behavior of sorority girls, as she did not wish to portray a stereotypical airhead sorority image. She states on the DVD commentary that they were all very kind and polite, and she enjoyed her time with them. She also observed women shopping from the café at Neiman Marcus, and attended law school for a day.
@Lensmaster1
@Lensmaster1 Ай бұрын
The writing was brilliant. Right from the beginning, they showed that Elle is a very smart person. It's just applied to the areas that she was trained in her whole life, which is fashion and beauty. She is able to apply that intelligence to anything she chooses, such as law school. Warner isn't nearly as smart. So the trope of the woman using her beauty to get is flipped upside down as Warner uses his handsome looks and family connections to try to get somewhere.
@oregonchick76
@oregonchick76 Ай бұрын
They made a great point in the commentary about how Elle solves the case with her own knowledge, not something she was taught at Harvard. It makes the selection committee's discussion about accepting the first fashion major a solid argument -- nobody else in Callahan's firm figured it out, after all, so clearly having diverse backgrounds IS helpful in a law setting -- even though in that early scene, they look like they're just trying to justify approving the bikini-wearing applicant. Even if Elle got a break because of her appearance, she was able to demonstrate that she brought actual value to the school and the practice of law beyond just being attractive.
@carsonc8285

Elle technically could've gotten in trouble if caught claiming to be a lawyer representing someone in a legal dispute before she was a lawyer, but her heart was in the right place going to get Rufus back. Rather than say she was her friend's lawyer, she just needed to claim the same thing she did when in court later, that she was acting as legal counsel. It's an important technicality. Other than that though she did very well sticking up for her friends & herself too. The part where she tells her ex "I'll never be good enough for you, will I?" & looks sad, but then the fire comes back in her eyes, she straightens her shoulders & just walks away, is SO GOOD because she knows inside that something is wrong with his values. It's his inability to see that she's smart, hardworking & full of potential. There's nothing wrong with her, therefore continuing to go after him is a waste because he's the one that's not good enough. Yes, she was hurt at 1st, but she realizes she was in love with a false image he projected & she's not about to settle for that!!

It’s so strange seeing how a group of men watch THAT scene-neutral expressions at the start, open posture, not noting the positions of the characters, not looking for background characters, etc. Women watching the scene go on high alert the moment we see a powerful man alone with a woman. Younger woman, woman positioned lower than the man, woman has long hair worn down and she’s in clothing that makes self-defense more difficult, no audible conversations in the hall, man stands with open posture to intimidate, man moves within reach and blocks exit-so many warning signs that tell women what’s about to happen!

Vivian had every right to treat Elle like she did, I'll die on this hill. Warner broke up with Elle and despite him being a smarmy asswipe he had the right to do that. Elle was the one who couldn't accept it, followed Warner to law school despite having no interest in law with the goal to get him back, so she made moves on him completely disrespecting Vivian who had nothing to do with the breakup. And despite Elle pretending she was there to study law she obviously wasn't and Vivian saw right through her. There was literally no reason for Vivian to be nice to Elle or accept her into the study group, Elle was acting like a stalker ex who couldn't take "no" for an answer. Later, when Elle's attitude changed and she did start to take law seriously and used her intelligence for other tings than trying to get Warner Vivian's attitude changed too.

Elle also had the right to try to get her shitty bf back ( she studied to get into law, she didn't just paint her nails and she had every intention to make herself "worthy" of him ) and Vivian was already mocking her in class even before Elle had any idea W was with someone. She was mocking her for who she was in front of everyone and she knew Elle didn't know her. 5 minutes after meeting Vivian she realised she was never gonna be good enough for the douchebag and changed her focus. Overall you might be right but you misjudged Elle's motivations and simplified Vivian's meanness.

She passed away in 2023 at 81 years of age. Welch first garnered attention for her role in Fantastic Voyage (1966), after which she signed a long-term contract with 20th Century Fox. They lent her contract to the British studio Hammer Film Productions, for whom she made One Million Years B.C. Images of her in the doe-skin bikini became a bestselling poster that turned her into an international sex symbol.

The girl that represents Elle in the opening credits is not Reese Witherspoon. She was filming another film at the time, and couldn't

You guys are smart funny not stupid funny and I absolutely appreciate that a lot. Thank you for covering a movie that I love and that most 'men' refuse to watch. I love this move. (PS) As I do not subject myself to multiple platforms I must make my suggestions here. I hope that's okay. -- "Whiplash" 2014 - "Patch Adams" 1998 - "Whip It" 2009 - "Good Morning Vietnam" 1988 - "Joe vs. The Volcano 1990 - "Willow" 1988 - "Ed Wood" 1994... and more. Thank you again.

This reaction was downright delightful!! Also, who is this Kyle person - a friend, perhaps? I’d guess another brother, but surely one family can’t hog ALL of the genes responsible for handsomeness! 😏

@38:10 The "Legally bald" idea immediately conjured up images in my mind of two TV lawyers, Eugene Young from The Practice and Ted Hoffmann from "Murder One". If they had ever made a crossover with both these characters, then "Legally bald" would've been the perfect name for it.

Be sure to also watch the sequel : Legally Red, White, and Blonde, where Elle is both planning her wedding while working for a Senator, played by Sally Field, in Washington DC. Awesome plot, and hysterically funny characters. You may even laugh harder and like it better. By the way, her dog Bruiser, is the actual son of the Taco Bell dog, purposely shown in the TV commercial... 🐄

oddly unrelated but I had a weird dream where Chris and Curtis were riding alongside me in a pod racer, telling me about all the things I was doing wrong, only for it to be revealed that my pod racer was on top of yours, both of which were being controlled by the two of you cause of how incompetent I was also, genuinely sorry to hear about your dogs -hope the little fellas health fairs up better
