Speaking about Nathan's and Robin's relationship when this was made Nathan wasn't out of the closet yet and Oprah during an interview was really pushing to get Nathan to come out, Robin saw this and immediately jumped in making a joke out of it taking the attention off Nathan. Nathan has gone on saying that was one of the kindest things ever and he is forever appreciative of it!

It may not seem like that long ago but to come out as gay at that time was still career suicide to an actor. He would have never worked again unless it was as a screaming queen....

Robin Williams wasn't meant to fall with the soup in the kitchen, which to me, makes it even funnier seeing Hank Azaria crying, but probably trying so hard not to die laughing. Also, Hank Azaria is such an amazing actor. He can do so many different voices and is so diverse in his character portrayals.

I was checking to see if anybody had already posted this little factoid because it's so great.😂 And yes, Hank Azaria was crying to hide his laughter. That's also why Val started chugging out of the bottle. I've always been SO GLAD they left that blooper in the film even though Robin is obviously laughing because goddamn if it isn't a perfect summary of the absolute chaos going on at the time!

Agador Spartcus was played by the brilliant Hank Azaria, who plays Moe, Apu, Chief Wiggum and more in the Simpsons. He's been in 87 movies, including Dodgeball, where he played the young Patches O'Houlihan in the video, and one of my favorites, Quiz Show, starring John Turturro and Ralph Feinnes.

I know The Birdcage, because I knew the original film from which it was based before. A 1978 French film called La Cage Aux Folles. And the play even before that.😊

Nathan Lane (as he does every time) STEALS every scene he is in. One of my favorite Robin Williams films, and Hackman is what he always is one of the top 50 actors of all time. I love and adore this. I wish more people saw it maybe the hate and ignorance would die down some.

Great human being, too. I believe Nathan Lane has mentioned that after the movie came out, and he had not publicly come out yet, they went on Oprah and she basically tried to push him into saying he was gay and Robin stepped in and changed the subject to protect him, something Lane has said cemented Robin as one of the all-time best.

I'm in complete agreement about Val's "mom" (Chrstine Baranski). If it was important to her she would have made more of an effort. Even when Armand first approaches her she has no idea how old Val is. Just shows how much more of a mom Albert was. "I'm very maternal and Albert's practically a breast." is one of my favorite lines.

One of the kindest stories I found out after the Williams passed was during the press tour for the film Nathan Lane and Robin Williams would do multiple interviews and one in particular asked questions in regards of Nathan's sexuality. It was a open secret that he was gay in the Theater community but wasn't comfortable to be out in the mainstream media and didn't want to forced to do that during an interview. Robin sensing this as the question was asked made a few impressions and talked about how proud he was to represent the gay community in a film that pushes against the status quo and jokes about the stereotypes and that Nathan is the real scene stealer. Nathan since said,"Robin, is the kindest, understanding and greatest people he's ever met oh and he's an iconic actor too!!!"

God I can't believe it's been almost a decade since he left us. To this day his is the only celebrity death that legitimately made me cry when I heard the news. Absolutely devastating for an entire generation who grew up on his movies.😢

Terrific 90s movie that was controversial at the time. If you want to see Nathan Lane play the “straight” man, the 2005 musical version based on the stage play of Mel Brooks’ The Producers is highly underrated. It has some scenes that still get me laughing even to this day. Or you can watch the 1968 version, which isn’t a musical, but Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel are great in it. The newer musical has more jokes and one liners.

This really was a risky movie to do at the time, considering where the US was from a cultural perspective. It was outrageously funny at the time for how much it clashed with "traditional" American ideals.

It's encouraging how much less controversial this movie is now. We have a long ways to go still, but to see that much change in ~30 years is nothing to sneeze at. 😊 I also second that they should watch The Producers! Another brilliantly fun film.

The 2005 producers is more like the modern day remakes of the Mel brooks classic, but it keeps the spirt of the original in tact while changing the format from dry comedy to musical.

Chris nailed it.... this is one of the few films where Robin Williams was outshined by his costar. Nathan Lane absolutely stole the show as Albert. The whole cast really, is so great though. Even though his character was atrocious, Gene Hackman as Barbara's father was fantastic at playing that part.

I love this movie so much. It’s absolutely hilarious but also hits some serious issues. Robbin Williams saying “it took me 20 years to get here and I’m not going let some idiot senator destroy it” hit hard for me. I openly came out as bi last year. It took years to get there and I feel what he is conveying in that scene so much.

This is a tragically underrated Robin Williams film that I never hear brought up. It's so good. My favorite part is Robin's reaction to the cook picking the lobster up off the floor and slapping it back on the plate.

Nathan Lane (Albert) is a major league stage comedy actor. He played Nathan Detroit opposite Faith Prince in a huge revival of Guys and Dolls, Bialastock in the film musical remake of The Producers, and he also was the voice of Timon in The Lion King.

I came across your video by chance and I’m totally enjoying your reaction to this film, one of my all time faves. My favorite scene is during the rehearsal number where Robin imitates several legendary dancers. I’m sure it was totally improvised and unexpected because you can see Nathan and Dan barely holding it together, trying so hard not to laugh so as not to ruin the take. I will always miss Robin Williams. Such an extraordinary talent.

Nathan Lane was the definition of “Yas Queen” in this film and loved him ever since. This film always felt like the Gay “Guess whose coming to dinner” and I love that I also like that they show that the politician parents actually get along with Albert and the others without knowing that they’re gay, showing that it’s totally a ridiculous concept to hate on people for being different.

I also heard that when Steven Spielberg was making Schindler’s List he got so depressed (as you would understand) that he would call up Robin Williams and ask him to tell him jokes to help lift his depression. Miss Robin. RIP Robin!

I remember when Robin Williams was on a German TV show being interviewed and a reporter asked him why do u think we don't have many comedy clubs in Germany he said do u think it's because u killed all the funny people 😂. It cut straight to commercial and when it came back he was no longer there. 😂😂😂 such a legend and truly a tragic loss to the world.

The dinnerplate scenes was my favourite - and one of the funniest scenes in any 90's movie. Such an impeccable cast. I adore Diane Weist - she was fantastic in this - and I loved her in Footloose as well. And kudos to Hank Azaria as well - he's such a chameleon. Robin, Nathan, and Gene were just top notch. Christine sparkled in it as well.

Robin Williams was originally supposed to play Albert. He requested to play Armand, because he thought he wouldn't be convincing enough as Albert. Nathan Lane, who played Albert was Timon from The Lion King, and was a big musical theater actor. He was so, so good to be able to keep up with Robin Williams in any scene. Hank Azaria (Agador) was also truly amazing, since he was able to keep his composure and delivered his lines with perfect comedic timing. The whole cast was a chef's kiss.

Albert vs "Mom": You're beginning to understand what the LGBTQ+ community know to be family, especially when teenagers are thrown out of their parents' house for coming out as Gay. This film had so many moments: Armond's declaration of love to Albert; the fiancee's instant connection to Albert; Albert's desparate, if doomed, attempts to be Butch out of love for his son...All these made me verklempt... and proud. It's not often that Robin Williams is upstaged, but Nathan Lane did it. What's ironic is that when this film was released, Nathan wasn't out, yet, but their chemistry and fondness for each other was such that, when doing the promotion circuit for the film, Robin was willing and able to deflect questions about Nathan's sexuality.

Nathan Lane( Albert) is a legend too, he’s just more well known for his work in theater. Probably most well known for the Producers. I’ve been lucky to see him on stage a few times. They are perfect together. You can tell they are feeding off each other.

Nathan Lane, who played Albert, was already a successful stage actor but hadn’t broken into film when they were casting the movie. So the studio wanted an actor with a bigger name among moviegoers. But Robin Williams insisted that Lane get the part. The thing was that Nathan Lane is gay, but wasn’t out yet. During the promotional tour, Williams and Lane appeared on Oprah. She started to ask Lane a question that was basically going to out him on national TV, which could have ruined his career at that point. But Williams interrupted and deflected the question, essentially saving Lane from the situation. Lane, who’s now a major star, says that he was so grateful to Williams, and was devastated when Williams passed away.

The dynamic between Gene Hackman and Nathan Lane is the my favorite part of the movie. Hackman, a moderate right-winger, playing a republican patriarch, and Lane, a gay Broadway star, playing a much sillier gay man than he is. Williams doesn't steal the show in this one.

Nathan Lane is a national treasure. I got see him on Broadway in the Addams Family when he played Gomez Addams. He’s better known for his pair up with Matthew Broderick on Broadway and in the movie The Producers. Watch that movie, but watch the original one with Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel first. Nathan Lane was in the first two seasons of Only Murders in the Building. Don’t know if he makes an appearance in season 3.

I saw the French movie "La Cage Aux Folles (Birds of a Feather)" and I loved it. The Birdcage is the remake of this 1978 french movie "La Cage Aux Folles (Birds of a Feather)".

Nathan Lane is truly an amazing actor, long time Broadway performer, voice of Timon in Lion King, and you guys would love him in The Producers (2005). Will Ferrell and Matthew Broderick are in Producers too. Check it out.

Nathan Lane wasn’t out of the closet yet when they made the movie and there is a video of Oprah interviewing Nathan and Robin and she asked Nathan how he got so good at the “girly” stuff and Robin swooped on and started joking around to take the focus off Nathan. They also made a movie of the play in the 70’s

For me, besides the obvious brilliance of all the actors, Gene Hackman was just my fave. The candy thing is now mine too 🤦🏻‍♀️. One of the best comedies ever made IMO. And taboo for it’s time, I’m so glad it’s a classic now.

I saw both Robin and Nathan interviewed about this film, Robin knew this was Nathan’s big break so he decided to play it straight and just let Nathan take centre stage, it shows what a generous spirit Robin was, he just let Nathan shine and boy did he shine.

The pairing of Robin & Nathan is brilliant. With Robin in a film most of the cast need to be able to give Robin space to "run". but Nathan steps in and makes the film like a Abbot & Costello show, they complement each other's comic style beautifully.
