The American composer John Duke (1899-1984) is best known for his art songs. This one dates from 1960 and while it may not be considered all that daring to set a text by e.e. cummings now, at that point this poem was only eight years old. Duke's language is not entirely tonal but you can still tell that this song both begins and ends in C Major (I sing it a third lower than the original key of E Major) and there are no terribly shocking gestures like you might find in the Berg early songs (which were written over forty years earlier).
