Man this brings back some serious memories. We take our tech for granted today and generations forward don't even THINK about audio quality lol I was a young boy back in those days and my father raised me around this stuff. He'd let me build old computers out of spare parts that he had no use for anymore and I remember the thrill that I felt the first time I got a computer I built to actually turn on! I remember shouting "IT'S ALIVE!" lol Remember those old 60lbs tube monitors that you would strain your eyes on playing Doom 3D on late at night? Man I miss those days so much. Even now with a Nvidia 3080 OC and a nice flat screen, it still doesn't hit the same as it did back then. I honored to have grown up when I did.

@@CallofDutyBlackOps28 To me, only Lee Jackson's pieces have some depth and are of enough quality to be nice to listen to. Bobby Prince's tracks are OK during gameplay and often have catching tune but otherwise are very simple and after a while pretty boring and repetitive.

@@Paar86 thats how i feel about the soundtrack as well, for some reason bobby's tracks feel kinda underwhelming and feel more ambient in a way, which is strange considering he made good tracks in doom, despite alot of his music was taken from the popular metal bands playing at that time, he still had plenty of good tracks that wernt ripped off from them,

Always wanted one of these as a kid! I had an AWE64 which was still very good but my Dad's friend had a SC-88 and I remember playing Duke Nukem, Blood, Doom etc on it and was just amazed at the quality of the sound! I have no use for one now but I really want to pick one up some day just to make happy the younger me.

+fossilfern A MIDI driver plus the cheap (and antique) Voice Crystal GM 4MB sound slots nicely between the sound of a GUS and an SC-55. It's a distant relative to the official GUS bank though few sounds are shared.

What a coincidence! Mt friend's Dad who is a sound engineer, producer and singer owned 4 sound Canvas modules plus a Yamaha MU50. Back in the early 90s my friend's Dad owned a Roland SC-55 plus an SD-35 which is basically an SC-7 with a built in floppy disk drive. As a child I often used to be allowed to take the SD-35 home and borrow it to use with my Yamaha PSS-790 and Casio CT-700 keyboards and in the end my friend's Dad let me keep the SD-35 so growing up I had the luxury of being able to play back midi files using my very own Roland Sound Canvas module. Back at the studio was an SC-55 and I was often invited over there to do some song cover backing tracks with my friend Lisa until Lisa's Dad sold the SC-55 in 1996 to buy an SC-88vl. The SC-88vl was also amazing especially for 1996 although I preferred some of the sounds on the SC-55 like the clean guitar, trombone and fretless bass ( many of the SC-55's sounds are based on the Roland U series modules ), I certainly really liked the SC-55 because back in the 90s it was more widely used. Then in 1998 the SC-88vl was sold to buy an SC-88 Pro which seemed a little ahead of it's time but it started becoming more widely used but in 2005 my friend's Dad decided to sell is sound modules and hardware after buying Reason and knew I would like them so he sold them to me and I bought them with some compensation money from when I broke my arm at respite in 2003. Very recently I bought a Roland SC-8850 and at the wekend I'm hoping to place a bid on a Korg 05R/W but I'm also going to buy another SC-55 next time one is listed in my country.
@LittleRichard1988
@LittleRichard1988 Жыл бұрын
It's not too late to buy a Sound Canvas module if you want one, I would reccomend getting an SC-88 Pro if you can because it has all the SC-88 sounds in addition to another map of new sounds including higher quality pianos, strings and saxophones. The SC-88 Pro is still usable for modern music productions, some producers still use it.

One good thing about modern technology is you can have modern source ports of 90s FPS games, and an SC-88 soundfont. I still swear by software rendering at 320 x 200 though, these old games just weren't meant for HD.

Fat Commander and one other I can't recall (both use Synth Bass 2) have a glitch. On the SC-8850 these tracks use "Bubble Bass" instead of the normal GM patch. It actually sounds neat but no device had the bubble bass patch at the time this was released. I don't know if the SC-88Pro has the patch or reacts in any odd way. This might be the same reason the bass does not play on the MU-80 in GS mode.
@sfurta
@sfurta 9 жыл бұрын
Most probably the low cost USB/MIDI converters are the problem. I have noticed several very unusual symptoms during recording of both soundtracks. Incorrect or missing instruments are just two of them. The fact is the Yamaha MU-80 is more sensitive, unfortunately I have noticed the missing bass when the recording was already uploaded.

This right here proves that Duke Forever in 2002, even if behind the times in a technical sense, would have still been a smash hit 1996, Duke 3d comes out, the same year that Quake comes out. At the exact moment Quake hit the shelves, Duke 3d is rendered obsolete--the same exact year it came out. Frankly Duke looks like shit compared to Full-3D Environment Quake, yet here we all are talking about how much we love Duke and its soundtrack, and how much we miss playing that old game. And rightfully so, the game was memorable and awesome We don't buy Duke for the Graphics, we buy Duke for the over the top action and ridiculous characters. We buy Duke for the kickass music. Where can I find each of these songs separately? I don't mind splitting them myself, but downloading them would be more convenient right now.

Gotham sounds a little messed up. I think the patch is supposed to be a Sawtooth, not synth strings.
@spoofersdomain9185
@spoofersdomain9185 6 жыл бұрын
Nope, it is supposed to have a synth brass drone patch. The sawtooth you mention that is played on the MIDI file normally without extra modification is extra patches meant for the OPL FM Synth.

You're right! I went in and made edits to the MIDIs and it sounds better when I remove tracks that have "FM" at the start of their title (and one unnecessary track titled "GUS Bass" in "Stalker").

+SpaceMarineITA *late ass response. Just listenin' to nostalgia.* The SC-88 has twice the ROM (8MB) of the SC-55 Mk-II and many of the default GM patches are modified or replaced with the new waves. Each newer model adds non-GM patches. The SC-88 Pro has 40(?)MB and many more patches still are replaced. IMO the quality of many patches went down but it was possible to switch back. This model did introduce a lot of new features and some pretty sweet ethnic and pad sounds. The SC-8850 has 64MB and sounds good but unbalanced in classic games. The SC-8820 lacks the 8850's new pianos and stereo strings...not that they were good anyway (compared to pro Roland gear). For classic gaming I would stick to the SC-55 MkII. It has a few more voices and an improved ROM (4MB vs 3MB) over the SC-55 or SC-50. Most importantly it is the General MIDI that almost all game developers wrote their GM tracks on. Duke Nukem 3D is one of a very few games that used something newer. But admit it: For DOS games it's FM, AWE or bust. That's what most had. XP #Dork

How hard would it be to find a SC55-88 ?
@OnekiKai
@OnekiKai 8 жыл бұрын
MultiGuy Not too hard. They appear on eBay somewhat regularly. I recommend the SC-55 Mk-II if you're going for the 'pure' sound DOS musicians used. The SC-88 and newer have modified ROMS even in compatible mode and different effects. Unfortunately you should expect to pay as much as $200 after shipping to get one. Alternatively the MU-80, MU-100 and MU-128 from Yamaha will all provide you pretty much the exact same sound as a DB50XG would.

Hi there. I own a Roland SC-88, however I noticed when I played back the Grabbag music for myself, i noticed that the overdriven guitars had a bit of a more, how do I say it, halo-y effect? I have no idea how to describe it. However yours sound different. Here's a video of my recording: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7eidsp50rnchXk.html

Hi, interesting. I also noticed different instrument on channels A04 and A05. Can you check its name? Try to reset the module to GS, maybe some advanced midi file changed some settings. "INST EDIT" + "INSTRUMENT ->" pressed together. Confirm with ALL.

I definitley prefer the shitty general MIDI soundtrack (the generic SoundBlaster version), but that's probably only because that's what I'm used to. This doesn't sound like MIDI at all, it really sounds like a studio quality reproduction of the soundtrack played at some gaming concert or something. It's pretty incredible. It's like you take some hard rocking Sega Genesis track then painstakingly convert it to SNES's SPC format for the express purpose of making it sound like a real band is playing instead of something that sounds like beeps and boops.
@borrisg4972
@borrisg4972 8 жыл бұрын
***** I understand that. The difference in quality is what I was getting at. MIDI is MIDI technically, but the difference between MIDI on a PC using "SoundBlaster compatible" harware (or software emulation) compared to this actual MIDI hardware is not something you can say "It's the same thing". It's technically the same. If I bought sheet music and read the notes out loud, it's technically the same as a composer using an orchestra to play the notes. That is to say, it's not at all the fucking same.
@borrisg4972

No, I got you. I didn't word it very well myself to begin with anyway (I do this alot..), calling them different "versions" when they really are one in the same. MIDIs make me think of classical music, where everyone is playing the same sheet music, but it might still sound a little different at each performance. I'd call it different versions, others would say it's still the same song. I wanna call it a potato/potato issue, but I am pretty off about it anyway. Incedentelly (or not, I forgot I was replying to DN3D and not DooM), from what I've heard the SNES version of DooM really is a different version. Someone with a better ear for it than me said the SNES one has slightly different arrangements and timings on some tracks.

+Borris G (Totally Goatally) You can actually install software synths and wavetables on Windows that are far better than the crappy included one. Just compare the default "MS Wavetable Synth" so something like the one on some recent soundblaster cards (like an Audigy 2). You can actually switch mid-playback on most software players. (Im currently using the SGM V2.01 Wavetable and its like awakening in a totally different world compared to the Microsoft one)

+Borris G (Totally Goatally) I go with the AWE because it is the best I can afford and was common in the era. I just use the 1MB ROM supplemented with the official synthgs 512K so I get the extra drum kits. It sounds like complete shit and therefore perfect. x3 Of course, an AWE/SB32 (mine) will load the 8MB Creative and 4MB Voice Crystal banks.
