To find just how far the human body can be pushed researchers studied athletes who ran six marathons a week over months and compared their energy intake and expenditure data to those of other athletes, workers, and pregnant women. WIRED's Robbie Gonzalez talks with study author Herman Pontzer of Duke University about the findings.

So if I understand correctly: you can burn up to 5k calories daily (roughly) and maintain that indefinitely since that’s the threshold of your metabolism with a proper diet , but anything more then that will be unsustainable for long periods of time. If I got that right, that’s pretty interesting.

What about extreme strongman competitors, like the world strongest man? Those guys eat 15.000cal pr day. It seems like this study only looks at runners and light weight athletes, I would be interested to find out
@Aveal
@Aveal 5 жыл бұрын
what he is saying is that you are able to intake 2.5 times your Baseline cal.consupmtion (burnt calories while doing nothing a day) this basic cal. consupmtion goes up with more muscle volume because they have to be sustained. So could it be that a strongman competitor needs 6000 cal per day without doing anything ... could be plausible.

I wonder what becomes possible if you feed people calories in a purer form, like straight sugar, or fat, or butter (along with some multivitamins, obviously), or even an IV or somesuch. Basically, I think the next question is "how effectively can we shortcut digestion?"
