It's 1973 and young New Zealand couple Kim and Janeen have run away to Europe and joined the circus - the Continental Circus. They're part of a convoy of Grand Prix motorcycle riders travelling across Western and Eastern Europe competing for the World Championship Road Racing title.
Love, Speed and Loss is a love story set against the backdrop of 1970s Grand Prix racing. Kim Newcombe and his childhood sweetheart wife, Janeen, arrived in Berlin in 1969. Kim had a job working as an engineer for the Konig outboard marine company. Within a year he'd taken the outboard engine and turned it into a lightning-fast road racing motorbike that led the world championship. And so the couple's European adventure began.

On route to Europe Janeen bought a Super8 camera in Hong Kong and started documenting the couple's new life. Love, Speed and Loss opens with Janeen watching the footage of her and Kim - young, in love and idealistic. The documentary moves between the 1970s and the present day as it reveals the couple's story, building toward the tragic event that saw Janeen's life change dramatically.

You really have to appreciate these times of Moto GP and F1. You had a thousand machinist's/engineers working out of there little back yard shops. All looking at the same problems. All coming up with different approaches , and solutions. Both these classes were exciting to witness these experimental prototypes being unveiled to the world. Nowadays both of these classes with their rules and regulations being so stringent. It stifles the imagination and creativity that came from people like Kim Newcombe. Thank you for sharing.

As a very young boy I would go to Cadwell with my brothers who raced motorcycles, Kim Newcombe always stuck in my head because one of my brothers was going to put a Konig engine in his bike, I think he had a SAAB engine at the time (the other had a Hillman Imp) I had always assumed Kim was the reason for the Konig (maybe Boret). Anyway for some reason it popped into my head today and I wondered what Kim was up to these days, I was shocked (and disheartened) to see he had died 50yrs ago. That got me thinking about John Newbold, who was always kind to me when I would ask questions as an annoying little kid. It shows how people really do live on in peoples memories
