The 806-foot ship "James L. Oberstar" passed under the Aerial Lift Bridge as it headed out to Lake Superior in Duluth, MN!
Boat Friends, this video starts by showing you part of the Duluth Harbor and Superior Bay completely frozen over. There was ice as far as the eye could see! This is a sure sign that winter has finally arrived in Duluth, MN. Many people get excited when the ice finally arrives because it makes for a cool and fun-looking backdrop as the big ships move around in that cold water.
The James L. Oberstar made its way to the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge with bright sunshine covering all parts of it so we could see the colors very clearly. Amazingly this ship almost broke the horn sound decbile record as well! You'll hear how excited I was to hear how loud the horn was and when relaying the reading from the decibel meter! That horn had such a deep sound and was very powerful.
This ship was carrying Iron Ore Pellets and I actually had a sample of these pellets for you to look at during the video. Plus you will learn what that large object on the hill in West Duluth is when you are watching these ship videos. It's called Enger Tower. You will see a few photos and I provide details about this tower to increase your familiarity with Duluth as you watch these ship videos in the future.
More information about the ship James L. Oberstar: www.interlake-steamship.com/ou...

Thanks for another great Duluth area video. I remember winter coming to northeastern wisconsin but not this early for ice on lakes. Duluth is maybe over 100 miles further north of where I grew up at just about 44 1/2 degrees north. Ice on lakes means it is nearly below 32 degrees most of the day. I do remember the winter of 1978-1979 when Lake Michigan froze all the way from east to west shores. One time we walked across Green Bay from the east shore near Bay Settlement out to the light house near the middle of the frozen bay on a day that had to have been in the low 20s all day in January. There were huge pressure ridges out on the huge sheets of ice. We heard the ice cracking and making loud sounds as it expanded. Once at the light house there was an area all the way around the light house that was liquid about 1 foot wide. We had to step across the ice to the ladder up to the light house cement platform.

Morro Bay, CA on the central Pacific coast Even the winter in Morro Bay is not bolow the 5os even at night with days in the high 60s and 70s even in January and February. We often travel to Morro Bay in winter. We just returned from a just 3 days and 2 nights in Morro Bay, CA. There is a huge morro rock just off shore. It was up to the low 70s with nights only down to 50. It is a huge estuary off the Pacific ocean with over 30 ocean sea otters, california sea lions, dolphins, even an occasional lost whale in the bay. There is an area between the docks in the bay with over 20 female sea otters with 10 with pups on their tummies that had to have been over 3 months old. They are so close we could get many great cell phone images. It is very nice to just walk along the beach of the Pacific ocean knowing the next stop to the west is Japan or Asia. The Pacific ocean is beyond huge. The Morro Bay area is nothing like the shore or bay in Los Angeles or San Diego. They have not allowed the high rise hotels, apartments, or condos like in the big cities. The prefer to keep Morro Bay a smaller town not a huge city. It looks like a city from the 1940s or 1950s not the 2020s.

Boy, with a horn like that, got to be close to 1st. The superstructure on this ship is quite abit smaller than most others, as far as height and width. Not sure if others were added over years or created much larger to begin with. A silly question, are pets allowed on board? Mike do you have a pet? I think the only way to catch snow is to watch cams over night, even a few inches gone by mid day both in Duluth and the cities. Not complaining mind you, just an observation. The area around park point must be shallower or most likely has less water motion to produce ice, where the Duluth shore and harbor take longer to freeze? Goofy questions for a goofy year.

During this time maintenance is performed on the chambers. Although there are occasional exceptions, such as ice, these two dates are pillars for shipping season in the Great Lakes.
