Memories... memories! Many. many moons ago, as a kid growing up in the Island of Siquijor, we would do this the old fashion way, on a wooden stool that had a steel "grater" in a shape of a sharp spur mounted on its head, where we scrape the coconut meat against it by hand. It would take us about ten minutes to do one coconut shell. The "but-but" and coconut juice was always a big treat for everyone! How about the joys of eating green mango and ripe jackfruit? Thanks Bud.

Wow! Fascinating stuff! Both with regards to language, as well as coconuts. Apparently in Bisaya it's called "butbot sa lubi" -- "the whitish ball like germination inside the shell of sprouting coconut fruit". And as Eric said, in tagalog it's Tumbong. Both "butbot" and "tumbong" translate to "rectum" or "rump" in English! You can't make this stuff up folks! So it quite literally is the "butt" of the coconut. Haha. As Eric also said, it only starts to form when the coconut is mature and is growing roots. I guess that's why some of them were empty when opened. Not yet ripe enough. (This video motivated me to do some research -- I had no idea about this stuff before! As you say, learn something new everyday!)

+Colin Christie More info: "When a coconut falls to the ground, it is already mature and partly green and brown. This coconut has the potentials of growing into a new plant. Shortly, in the presence of moisture, air and sunlight, this nut will break a small shoot with miniature leaves. Soon it will break roots which will feed water to the developing plant. However, before the roots shoot, the plant uses the coconut water inside the nut. It is at this early stage that a white spongy material grows inside the nut to provide nutrients to the plant before the roots sprout. This white spongy material is the coconut apple. To enjoy a juicy sweet apple you need to cut open the nut at the right stage just before the roots are too long or the apple will be dry and tough and will no longer be sweet." source: mynuvalihome.com/2010/10/do-you-know-what-a-coconut-apple-is/

The oil extracted from coconut meat has several uses since its high demand in the world market. The coconut shell has as many uses as well. Charcoal from coconut shell has high heating value and is used for heat treatment of steel. Activated carbon from the shell has various industrial uses and can be used as absorbent for gas masks to filter out many poisonous gases. Every part of the tree has certain use.Yes, the coconut is the tree of life for it can provide man with food, medicine, clothing and shelter.

Another Filipino name for that is tumbong... or in english, coconut pearl or coconut apple. The smaller the butbut, the sweeter it is. It usually begins to form when the coconut starts to have roots, getting bigger and bitter as it goes. :D

Coconut has three stages Bud! from the very young meaning, the buko hasn't develope yet and must stay attach to the tree until, the buko develope. the buko is soft enough that you can spoon it and eat it this is the middle stage and the very old coconut is only use for condiment and milk for cooking and if you eat way too much of that very old coconut you will get the runs just like, eating too much oatmeal makes you go to the bathroom a lot because it's the rawness of it .. your body may have problem breaking it down due to rich thick rawness.. And I don't think, the water of the very old coconut is for drinking either they don't taste the same as the middle stage which is buko juice ..

Nice meeting the locals and learning something new. Coconut bulbs or apples like that form when the coconut is in the process of growing into a new plant. How did it taste? The lady used a nice bolo (machete) to crack them in half. Thanks for sharing =)

Coconut is like the chicken in the animal world, you basically can use EVERY PART. You can eat the fruit, use the leaves and the main body, even the core is edible. The shell, even when empty is still very useful

.........Very interesting. I've never seen that variety of coconut before (not that I'm a coconut expert). What is that lump of white stuff that came out of the shell? The texture looked spongy. The shell can be polished and used for jewellery. Coconut "water" is full of electrolytes and minerals. I'd love some right now (lol)........................
