@fexbio

Problem is their rather narrow definition of intelligence. Because society awards a few capabilities more, these people think they invented the brain. Engineers are a good example of that. People who have competence in learning advanced math think that makes them better because they can design bridges and engines and shit, but a lot of them have linear thought and have a hard time seeing the big picture. Not to mention engineering in the real world involves a LOT of trial and error. I mean, a whole lot. Ever since I worked at a infrastructure company, I feel very uneasy driving over bridges and under tunnels. This friend of mine goes about how philosophy is useless while being painfully unaware of how society basically has its every social structure thought or improved by a philosopher.

I have always been labeled as someone with common sense because I'm responsible and practical, but I'm also a degreed CPA who aced 16 hours of exams to get my license. I think people who are jealous of people with education like to jump to the "but what about common sense" thing to make themselves feel better about not being as educated. Instead of going to therapy or gaining more education, they instead dismiss the accomplishments of others.

@djm4854
@djm4854 Жыл бұрын
@@secretsquirrel7374 There are a few differences. First, community colleges have smaller campuses, which also means less staff and less course variety. Second, universities tend to get a great deal more funding due to the size of its student population, alumni (who often donate), and sporting teams. Third, you cannot receive a Bachelor's degree from a community college, which is often required for job opportunities; you can receive an Associate's degree at a community college. Also, community college degrees can be completed in 2 years, as opposed to 4 years at university. Most people attend community college and then will transfer to a university to finish their remaining two years, saving themselves a great deal of financial distress and time. In the end, though you can receive a decent education from great professors at a community college, it's still recognized as inferior to university standing by the social majority, even from a hiring standpoint, and so, often university completion is more highly desired.

Okay the community college one is pretty funny but going to a CC doesn’t mesure your intelligence. It’s a cheaper route to get an associates degree before transferring to a university with guaranteed transfer credits. I think a lot of seniors should consider doing this, I’ve gotten a lot of financial aid (haven’t had to pay for school so far), and professors are really understanding in times like these when it comes to extra help and time. :) but that person was being hella cocky

Yeah, I hate that too. People always look down on students in certain schools without regarding that they may not be financially capable of getting into an allegedly "better" school. I say allegedly because I have experienced the standard at both poorer and richer schools, the only real differences is that the wealthier schools tend to have better infrastructure and funding, but when it comes down to the teaching skills of the professors I find the cheaper schools outperform on average. Maybe it's because the lecturers put more effort in, or dont let their ego/prestige get in the way of learning. I dunno. But that has been my experience.

Funnily enough, I recently took an IQ test and scored 118. While that is a little bit above the average in the UK (average is 100) they told me it was my visual perception that was strongest as opposed to general knowledge. I've always been a visual learner, it's easier for me to remember things I've seen as I can recall images quite well in my mind. Every one is different and that's a good thing I believe. My mom says she's thick/dumb because she doesn't know much about geography/science etc but my gosh does she bake the most beautiful and delicious cakes and she's so good at arts and crafts too, so much so that friends and family always ask her to make things for them. regarding the IQ test, it's even more complicated then that. As a child I scored over 135 on an IQ test for the gifted program and later at age 20 scored in the 92nd percentile for IQ again. What these numbers really allowed my doctors/teachers to see was that I required further testing because while it was clear I was very clever, I was struggling with a lot of learning issues. I was given multiple tests over many MANY years which confirmed that I suffered from learning disabilities because certain skills that should score similar had vast different scores. For example in Grade 6 I could read and comprehend English at a university level but my ability to spell was at a grade 3 level. Same with Math, while I could understand higher level problem solving, thanks to dyscalculia often my basic arithmetic was wrong. IQ tests pretty much just compare you to your peer group and give a basic idea of how high or low you're functioning in comparison but there are far more involved tests to actually find out what skills you have, what you might have deficits in and if those deficits are extreme enough to classify as learning disabilities. While I loved being in the gifted program in school, the number of times I'd go to get support for my disabilities in the special ed department and have to explain to other students you could be both "gifted" (cause the entire school knew who we were) and have learning disabilities was sometimes a weekly occurrence.

Thanks for saying that I considered myself less intelligent for having learning disabilities for a long time. I could read college level books in middle school but developed very bad math anxiety and just couldnt do it, i also have ADD. While I am not super intelligent i think its important to say that just because you cant do math or struggle with english it doesn't mean you are stupid. I think Albert Eistein said 'Dont judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, or it will live the rest of its life believing it was stupid' (i have crappy memory so it is 99% possible that I mixed up the person who said it and the actual words 😅 EDIT: Einstein didn't say it it has been falsely attributed to him. I have no idea who did say) Anyways thanks for saying it, its too often that people associate learning disabilities with stupidity

I totally agree that learning differently and having different abilities doesn’t isn’t always a bad thing. It just often makes life harder because of the way our society is set up. I feel like generally it's a byproduct from their parent instilling that in them. The number of times I've heard a parent exclaim their 3 or 4-year-old IQ as being over 150... Without them realizing that a3 or 4-year-olds IQ test is highly inaccurate and likely to drop off to normal range by the time they're a teenager because of how IQ's are calculated. Meanwhile their child's getting saturated in this idea and they're probably going to be ruined by the time they're a teenager as well. Kids that are told over and over that they're so smart tend to not try and have a high rate of failure because of it. =\ then the poor kid as an adult feels like a failure because they didn't reach everybody's expectations. When in reality they probably would have been fine if their parents haddn't obsessed over it.

By the way, Charlotte. I speak English as a second language, and I think native speakers are more likely to not learn the difference between things like "your" and "you're". We learn to speak and write at the same time, and because English doesn't pronounce things how they are written, we pay attention to differences. However, native speakers spend the first years of their life hearing only spoken language, hearing people say "yoor" and "shudv", and once they learn basic writing, some have arrogance to think they have nothing further to learn, because "our mother language", and thus, surprisingly, never learn. And, yes, when you keep hearing "shudv", often sounding like "should-f", and don't think about it, you're going to assume "should of" is perfectly reasonable.

The community college one would be wrong. Ivy League colleges are well known to "sell" degrees. Look it up. If the family donates enough cash the kid is handed a degree without doing the work. On the whole, most of the Ivy League degrees that have actually been earned are the ones that scholarship kids or kids that worked their way through have earned. It's a sad state of affairs that people assume because some douche canoe says "I went to so and so.", it means they are brilliant. More often than not it means their parents had some cash. On the flip side, if you are in community college, you have to earn those grades or you get booted.
