We bought our new to us 2015 Range Rover L405 with 4.4L TDV8 with a restricted performance issue. The Land Rover workshop estimated 2800 Euro to fix the issue. We investigated it and found a serious design flaw by land Rover which caused the issue. It was fixable for 0 Euro.
We are not liable for any harm you do to your car, your engine, your surroundings or yourself. Use the information given in this video at your own risk.
We hope you enjoy this episode.

And after charging you over £2k to solve it, they'll just push the bag back, knowing from the start, that that is the issue! My ex partner works for JLR - and she says how disgracefully inept, they are in assembling cars! Ripped harnesses, failure to install bolts, parts shoved in rather than done carefully( To save time), she said she'd never buy a LR! 😂 But C&V are absolutely brilliant! OMG they are fantastic!

Starting around 14:00, you repeatedly mentioned the vacuum/negative pressure out of the air cleaner box ... and then went back to the weak/spongy spring diagnosis and the complete valve assembly machining process. In my mind, I was thinking, "uhhh, did you check intake of the air cleaner box itself yet?" No turbo lag ... but a trash bag! ;-) At the end, every time you kept shoving the bag down in that hood gap, I kept thinking "put a piece of doubled-up black duck tape on it to keep it in place!" I'm really shocked at how that's really OEM sound dampening. That all said, this was indeed a very interesting exercise to see how complex these modern car systems are, but also, as you say, how clever some of the engineering is. I'm in awe of your machining skills, and way you were calibrating the spring tension was really informative. A few days ago, I was making a very minor repair on a utility trailer tarp tie-down, overtorqued a screw and snapped the head off; my first thought was "well, Christian wouldn't've ever done that!" Christian relates how he's waking up early and working four weeks to trace the problem, and Vera says "hey, this really pretty car has massage seats!" That's comedy gold.

I bought a one owner from new R32 dirt cheap a few years back off a guy who didn't want to put the money into it to get it fixed. Drove fine apart from at lower speeds the engine would misfire and stutter. Dealership quoted him £14k to replace the engine and all the ancillaries. Took me a year and lots of incorrect diagnosis and £2k in parts and to find the issues but the main issue turned out to be 4 damaged wires that cost less than £10 to replace... Essentially similar to this the clue was just looking at what the ecu was asking the engine to do and what the engine was actually doing.

I just watch this channel because i like the humourous and analitical approach. Yes it can sent you high up in the woods sometimes searching way to deep for a problem. Or making things way too difficult. like this video shows. Still i think it's the right way to do things. And on the other hand: lot's of work you have done is not for nothing. The car is now in tiptop condition. Lot's of possible weak points are now serviced. We had a repair saga on the (UK) 406 coupe forum with a V6 petrol which refused to make good power. In the end, and after months of searching by several guys, someone discovered that the air intake hose collapsed under certain circumstances. That thing is tucked away far away, and isn't easy accesable. After replacing it, the car drove like new. I don't own a landrover product, but a 406 v6 coupe. Still i watch every video, because of great mechanical skills, and lots of humor. Great channel!! Greetings from the Netherlands, Nico.

If you'd gone down the dealers route a fortune would have been spent with no result. So how many dealers have done that, as their strategy is throw parts first and ask questions later. Really the dealer hasn't fixed it so they should replace the old parts and not charge. Or charge a token amount and leave the new parts as its relifed some parts. A very poor standard of workmanship from a dealer or any garage.

😅 We don't do that unfortunately. Believe the list is very long of those who to bring over their car to sort out the issues they have. But they are not that hard to wrench on, with a little bit of experience. 👌💪🙋‍♀️

@@Vera_and_Christian Thank you for your reply. No, i could hardly expect you to add me to your long list of grumpy L/R drivers, otherwise you will have a 10 klm line of traffic all waiting for you to both work your magic. Haha. It's just that i was a mechanic in an earlier life and i refuse to work on my cars as i have learnt enough to stand over someone else and tell them what to do !!! When you run out of L/R and Ranges to fix may i suggest you turn your hands to Toyota's (Toymotors, we call them) as you can sort them all with a good range of hammers, adustable spanners, wrenches pliers and screwdrivers. !!! Cheers

Most important Christian, you must tell Vera we all care about her Trip to the Netherlands 😊. I loved my Discovery, but sold it for very similar reasons, at some stage you have to cut your losses. Now if only I had a lathe...

Respect for your patience / diagnosis and for not throwing money at it like garages ! I have recently fixed a 2004 Transmission Limp Mode on a Mercedes 320CLK and that was oil leaking into the electrical plug on the transmission and working its way up into the cabin where the TCM is located - rather amazing Great Work

Another great bit of content. Was waiting with baited breath as to what the outcome was. The simple fixes are always the most satisfying. It may have taken 4 weeks, but some great videos from that. I did rush out to check mine only to find it perfectly in place. But thanks to you will be one of the first places to check next time. Looking forward to your next installment. Thanks to you both again. Very entertaining also.

Well done, Christian. 👍 I don't think this was low performance, but rather a result of not giving up on a nasty problem. In the end, hard work and the longest breath wins. After this long analysis you've maybe found the best and cheapest engine immobolizer ever.

I dont have the Restricted Performance problem yet, but I going down to my garage, just to make sure that the trash bag is in its place. And awesome idea that you did not reveal the Problem in the last video! Makes it easier to understand the efforts one must take to become so competent. This is proper Instagram vs reality. And our lives, time, vehicles and money are real. Appreciate your immense hard work, respect!

I am so glad you bought a Range Rover! I had an old one many years ago and loved it but the new ones are just amazing things in spite of reliability issues. You guys are just so fantastic to watch I love the chemistry between you. Christian's old school, a well as his new school, engineering skills are so entertaining and interesting to watch. I can't wait for the day I have my proper garage, with lift, then the fun will begin (I even failed to remove 2 x 13 mm bolts on the rear brake piston support bracket on my 2004 Ford CMax the other day. Hopefully the wheel bearing will hang in there till spring). Keep it up guys!

This is my favourite video so far. It's the journey, not the destination. It was a very valuable four weeks as you two and us viewers intimately learnt about the TDV8 Range Rover's intake and exhaust systems. And as an ancillary benefit, the many parts removed were removed before they or the fasteners fused in place making future disassembly less burdensome. So congratulations! I'm looking forward to watching this powerful SUV stretch its legs on the autobahn.

That was unbelievable it makes so much sense when you think about it but I really enjoyed the engineering content of the video you are not just an electrician you are an engineering wizard.i had a similar problem years ago with an air intake fault.A fly was caught in the element of the MAP sensor which completely change the air intake values 😵‍💫it took a while to work it out but with the fly removed everything was back to normal. Thanks I really enjoyed the video.

This was a great video, thank you for all your, and your wifes efforts. Your determination is great to watch. Whoever started the "Germans don't have a sense of humour" story..is incorrect 😃You had me laughing all the way through. I once had an Audi Coupe, that missfired as it was starting, and then spent days looking at the plugs, Timing, electrics, trying to fix the missfire, as i thought it may had jumped a tooth on the timing. A Mechanic friend of my Father was visiting... looks under the bonnet for 2 seconds and pushes a hose back on the carb 🤣 We have all been there. Looking forward to more stories, this will be hard to beat, but i'm sure you will have a good go 😍 PS leaving the spring out was epic thanks for including it, many wouldn't have.

Actually, no, The best go to first principles and understand the SYSTEM (As Christian did... eventually) rather than the "seen it before" or " this is the effect, so it must be this" approaches. (And yes, I have experience as a field technician charged with assisting with issues others can't find. Rule 1. Ask "what did you do? Rule 2: Ask yourself "How does the system work" . Those who apply rule 2 rarely call for help. Roger UK
