Dumpster Diving at Retail and Thrift Stores

Жыл бұрынHi and welcome back! We had a great time dumpster diving in a different city - we probably only dive here once a month and some days are definitely better than others. Today we found a dozen boxes of chocolate and lots of items from the thrift store that we can donate! Which is kind of funny because someone already donated them.. but we will clean them up and re-home them to people in our community or the animal shelter, which always needs more bedding and pillows.
PS the chocolates are delicious! I definitely kept more than one box for myself and have already given some to our families and friends. They're a big hit!

You don’t have to melt the candles down. Break away all the glass and pop them in a new container. Voila! A junk journal er would love to have all those stickers

I just just remove the glass cut the candles up into pieces and throw them in my wax warmer.

Yes, I know some people who would have loved the "queen" stickers!!! 🕺💞🌹 even a smaller haul gives us a chance to hang out with you two loves! Bones has the nicest color of eyes.

Lampshades! Grab those unless they are totally wrecked. Midcentury modern ones & even newer fiberglass looking shades are sought after. If you find broken lamps, grab the filial & the harp (the twisty bit on top & the part that surrounds the lightbulb) as they are useful for repairing lamps.

Hello. I don’t melt down the candles. I just knock off the broken glass and put the actual wax candle in a pick jar. Works great. Love your channel. 🥰🇨🇦

You can knock the glass off and cut them up for melters. Several dumpster divers do that.

I’ve diced up chocolates after holidays before and put them in chocolate chip cookie dough. It worked well. Love you guys! ☮️

A note on the post about the locked dumpster. I retired from Waste Management. People lock their dumpsters to prevent illegal dumping. It’s rarely because of “good” trash. Love y’all’s channel!

As I said previously, before throwing things away why don’t ppl do what you do and put their stuff out for curb alerts or have a huge community yard sale? you can just cut/break up candles and use for wax melts. you can even make up baggies of them and sell at garage sales

Can not believe you left those candles. No re-melting required just slide them out of the broken glass and put them in a different container, like an old bowl, mug or even a little planter. I certainly would not have left them. Still nice to see you diving even if you did not get a huge haul. Everyone seems to have a lot of luck finding food at aldi. Bones has lovely eyes.

Yeah just pop them in the freezer first for about 20 minutes makes it easier to remove from broken containers

Hi Kelly! Just to let you know for future reference you could have taken that half a dollar bill to your bank and exchanged it. The banks send in damaged money like this to the treasury department to be retired and destroyed.There is supposed to be so much of each dedomination of bill and coin in circulation at any given time per them. So anytime you have any bills that are ripped or missing peices, or coins that are smashed/guouged that machines just won't accept, take them into any bank to be exchanged. I enjoy watching your videos, you and Alex make a great team. It's crazy to see see what some people just throw away. I am glad there are people like you and your hubby that rescue useful items and food and keep them out of the landfill. Oh and Mr. Bones is adorable.

Hi Kelly, I am from the UK and love watching your channel. I wouldn't have thought you would have to melt the candles down, just knock the glass off and put them in an old candle receptacle, easy as that! Just a thought for next time. You usually take them we were surprised when you left them. The lampshade too even if the material part is awful, we have sold so many over the years at car boot sales to people that use the framework to custom make a lampshade. My mother and I think both of you are great and love watching you. Thank You.

You can recover a cat tree. You find a lot of rugs that you could use to recover the cat tree. I’m sure Bones would love that. 🐈⬛

Hi guys! Thanks for taking us along! I know you can't take everything you find, but have you considered taking the broken porcelain mugs and candle holders etc for someone who does mosaics? You could maybe even put a call out on marketplace before you dive and see if there is anyone who would want it if you find some.

Right after you found the vase, when the nearby dumpster had bubble wrap on top, you should have grabbed some and wrapped the vase for extra protection. 😊

Any half paper money, as long as the full serial number is intact, is worth it's face value. Take it to any bank , they will exchange it for a full bill.

FYI: when you see magazines that aren’t wet or bent and torn, do consider taking them and donating to places that do crafts (collage, decoupage, vision boards, etc.), and to senior centers. Drug rehab, schools, prisons (or people who work in prison ministry), elder programs, churches, etc. Where I live we have a ReMarket Thrift Store that is nothing but things that can be used in arts & crafts.

Even if the cover of a decorative pillow doesn't unzip, you can throw the whole pillow in the wash and they still come out nice and clean. I've had to do that before when my children were young and would wake up in the middle of the night with a stomach bug... I won't go into detail but you can probably guess why their cute decorative bed pillows needed washing... lol!

I just found out that if you put those candles in the broken glass containers in the freezer for a bit, it is easier to remove the candles from the glass.

There's a wax warmer at Walmart for around 5 dollars, any broken candles can be put in another glass container and put on the warmer for endless good smells.

Easier candle hack. Put in freezer, pop glass off. Chop up into dice sized cubes. Use in a wax warmer. U can buy new but very easy to find at garage sales and thrift stores. Store wax cubes in zip lock bags the house. If u put them in a garage they will melt. That way you don’t have to melt it all down and make a mess. I cut the wax with a cheap cheese cutter it’s just neater than using a knife, and slices the wax nicely. You can get from any Walmart for just a few bucks.
