There is not usual key on "hosszufurulya". The scale on the "hosszúfurulya" differs from the European seven-note scale, but this is not a consequence of fingering, but of deep cultural roots. Hungarian folk music is essentially monophonic. In the rest of Europe, when they changed to a tercestral polyphony, they abandoned the natural seven-note scale of physical laws: they moved to the tonal seven-note scale. The 'hosszúfurulya', even when used with other instruments, has always remained in monophonic thinking. Thus, it preserved the natural scale which is based on „so” therefore it is natural mixolid. (so, la, te, do, ré, mi, fe. Therfore ’te’ is between ’ta’ and ’ti’, ’fe’ is between ’fa’ and ’fi’.) The basic note of the tunes is the basic of the instrument, on this video it is F. (Hosszufurulyas' basic can be from E to G sharp, or rarely A.) Mainly we play ancient pentathonic music on it using a special pentathonic-natural mixolid thinking. The closest similar instrument to "hosszú furugla" in teh "kuraj" used by the Baskir people living between the Ural hills and the Volga river. So a really very old instrument, and very old tradition of the hungarians. Many tunes has version in middle asia. The tunes are present in Transilvania too. Many of them.
