Duncan is one of my favorite human beings... when I hear him express these evils of modern society that I experience everyday, it puts me at ease.. it's just nice knowing that there are intelligent people out there that sympathize with those of us that have to work through this fucking shit system silently and in a great deal of pain. Duncan just lightens my soul a bit, when it's feeling heavy and weighed down. I still need a hug, but this'll do for now.

@@d_chatz8353 As soon as he said it, it caught my attention. I had been telling ppl this and often they couldn't understand and I just want to learn how that stops... So many times I have trouble listening to people, genuinely connections, crying when loved ones pass... It's cery isolating and to hear him say that makes me feel less alone, hopeful because I know there's a way out, but confused because I dont what it is.
@TheDJOblivion

I really struggle with this too, I have zero empathy and equate my feeling for people to their value to me based on things like loyalty, reliability is a big one, maybe some other things, but I certainly don't feel love for anyone by any definition I've heard from others. I feel so bad for my gf sometimes, she genuinely cares how I feel or if I'm feeling any kind of discomfort, although I've forced myself to pay attention to her feelings and act accordingly it certainly wasn't natural. Sometimes I wonder if I'm a socio/psycho-path.

I was feeling stressed, anxious, exhausted and unloved. I just wanted to thank you both for sharing this. Duncan has been my long time favorite Podcaster and I've just been getting into Theo this past year. This hit just right. I don’t know who is gonna read this but Theo and Duncan having a deep conversation is incredibly nice to hear. Duncan, you’re an incredibly deep thinker but speak it so relatable that it’s simple. I appreciate your perspectives on a wide variety of topics Theo. You’re a great interviewer. I like you’re capabilities to adapt to any guest. Like minds of Duncan. You choose some deep questions because you know he’s got great insight. You’re a dope light -SW

On the topic of the most essential jobs being paid the least, I worked as a 911 paramedic in Orlando and made about $12/hour. The last month or so I've been at a job in a hospital where I push patients around in their beds all day and make closer to $20/hour. Granted, I worked for a private ambulance company, it would've been a little better in a fire department, but trained and certified EMTs starting at 9 bucks an hour is criminal. I know full-time EMTs who responded to the Pulse shooting who are on food stamps. But we stay in the job because we are passionate people, and proud of what we do, so we get taken advantage of and work 60-80 hour weeks to make ends meet because we are exempt from all kinds of labor laws as emergency workers. The longest shift I did was 96 hours in a row, catching naps here and there between calls. A good buddy quit to go work at a 7/11 and said he got paid better and treated better by the management.

@derekfletcher8934 5 жыл бұрын
@Madji Of Cimmeria seems logical, actually. Big Healthcare keeps EMT pay low to encourage people to get jobs at bars in order to feed people booze that ends up in a trip to the hospital. The EMT is a pawn to shuffle more customers into the hospital, customers who came from alcohol use... Nah, I'm just on a conspiracy kick thank to Bill Burr. In all seriousness EMTs and firefighters are grossly underpaid. Nurses too.
@modernarchive7502
@modernarchive7502 5 жыл бұрын
9.00? I was making that as the AV geek, technically an employee of the state in college 1986. Plus it supports my conspiracy theory. I'll type it in below. If you feel like reading it, could you weigh in with a score ranging from 0 = "Nah..." and 10 - "You nailed it." Here goes: In some cities, the city EMTs respond to calls but they call a private ambulance service for transport if someone needs to go to the hospital. Those private companies bill $2000 for a two-mile ride, with no equipment hooked up for monitoring or IVs started or anything like that. The private company pays a flat fee to the city for the right to do as many transports as they can manage, and bill whatever they can. To summarize: the EMTs decide, the private firm profits. That strikes me as a set-up for a system in which EMTs request transports unnecessarily because the private company rewards them with some of the cash that eventually rolls in from Medicare or from the transported person's bank account i.e., the old kickie-bickie. Does that happen IRL?

Yep. Here in California min wage is $11 an hour. I got my associates degree last year in addiction studies and I became a drug and alcohol counselor for teens. They started me out at $13 an hour. They said after 2 years you would become certified and then be able to make $15 an hour. And it doesn't get much better. It was a 42 unit program, I graduated with 70 units instead of 60. I quit after 4 months and went back to my state custodial job making $22. That field and many others like it make no sense to go to college for. Unless you're 70 and retired and really want to help people....or you still live at home with your parents and have no kids or debt you can do it. Otherwise, it's not doable as a career. It's too expensive to be altruistic in your career

Willis Sears DING! Best enlightened comment on this thread. This is exactly what happened to me. I got a wake up call that opened my entire mind up to what the world really is, but it shattered my reality in such a way that I’ve never been able to look at life or see the value in it the same way since. Everything changed “after the fire” as I call it. Great insight.

James Robinson I listen to Dr. Jordan Peterson and he talks about earned and unearned wisdom. They both come with a price. Stupidity has consequences but it's because you don't know any better. Wisdom can paralyze you because it comes with the fear of everything. So you have to reorient yourself in a way where your not taking life to seriously even though you know exactly how serious it really is and isn't.
