One, in my personal opinion, completely underestimated film, which, however, has cult status today. A great star cast with a fantastic music composition by Brian Eno and Toto. And of all the adaptations of the classic by Frank Herbert, the best realization, even if it certainly doesn't stick exactly to the book. However, this could not have been realized even in a three-parter with 3 hours each. I love this film! And the end credits are the best thing ever done in the film world.

Can anyone remind me the flaws of this movie? Lack of action? The 2021 one gets boring at times too. Unfaithful to the books? Sure, lets ignore the black dirtying, gender swaps, the baron sexuality (which Hollywood would probably see as heroic), the wormholes rendering spice mutants unnecessary. They didn’t even get the gom jabbar right. Being weird? Again, same (which is good though. *Dune is weird* )

@@jamesmclamb2098 It's also likely that the ones making the remakes, and the ones paying for them, happen to currently be of an age to make such movies, and be interested in paying to see them. Though again, as I said before, some truly awesome stuff did in fact come out of the 80s. Maybe it was sort of a right-time-right-place kinda thing; movies had been around long enough for a whole generation of film-makers to exist who had lived with movies their whole life, but things also hadn't gone so completely corporate and standardized, so inspired content was still a valid option.

When I first saw this for Christmas of “84” in my late teens. I knew this would become a cult classic instead of a Hollywood formula box office hit. It seemed to cerebral for the general moviegoers back then but I understood David Lynch’s vision here and he shouldn’t be embarrassed by this major effort. I loved it from the very beginning but feel like that audience failed him as that visionary director that he is not the other way around. It may not be truly faithful to Frank Herbert’s novel but that’s the job of the director who takes on the challenge with an epic story such as this. They inject their style, vision, and atmosphere of creativity. The sets to the costume design to art direction, music, casting, and make-up was done on such a scale of bravado. Honorable mentions to Bob Ringwood, Toto, Dino de Laurentiis, and Rafaela de Laurentiis for bringing this to the big screen years ago which I consider now an extremely underrated classic.

Apparently this movie got terrible reviews and did not make money. As a kid, I didn't notice - because I was too busy having it as one of my absolute favorites! Thanks to David Lynch, Daniel Lanois and the Eno brothers, and everyone else for making the movie so EPIC! (long before "epic" lost its meaning through overuse)

Legendary cast. I don't know of any current actor who could carry the air of aristocracy like Jose Ferrer, Jurgen prochnow, and Max Von Sydow. Dean Stockwell's finest performance. Kenneth MacMillan appropriately revolting. Sting despicable. Francesca Annis graceful and courtly. Linda Hunt perfect as Shadout Mapes. Also Everett McGill's best work, gritty and commanding. All of the Bene Geserit were perfect. It's a shame that there were no best supporting actor awards for this movie. The only miss in casting was Paul Smith, can't get past his roles in HEE HAW and the Hey Vern movies

Dune 84 was a great movie. Lynch's interpretation was so visually stylish and gritty. I think it's underrated and it's trendy to hate on it by people that have read the books and are miffed that it's not an exact representation of them. The music, the FX, all incredible. Also Sean Young and Francesca Annis were hot :)

Yes, and since Denis Villenueve is readapting this novel into a two-part movie. Dune will be split into two movies, and maybe more as what he stated. I hope that he nails it this time so we can see the succeeding books adapted into the big screen up until the 6th book titled Chapterhouse Dune.

Aside from the music, what makes the end credits unique is that the actors are live action and, even though unmoving, absolutely in character. And they were so well cast. There are elements I would criticize, but none of that.

Alicia Witt turned out to be a babe when she grew up. She played the redhead D-girl in the one sopranos episode. Fitting considering Alia was supposed to be a redhead, especially in the sequels that were never made.

Frank Herbert wrote "Dune" for publication during the Psychedelic 1960s so "Navigators" snort "Melange" excreted by "sandworms" to "mind warp" or "hallucinate" to travel anywhere until they mutate into walrus creatures. I met his son Brian to sign a book "Chani and Irulan may you fold space". Still "Dune Encyclopedia" on "frigates" had an interesting commentary on heat engines.

There's a dueling sense of mystical and wondrous feeling from the end credits of the original Dune as each is overlayed behind a field of rising dark blue waves. But from that sense it's met with melancholy if you reflect on the great people we've lost here. It wasn't long ago we lost Dean Stockwell and these other actors begin to age as cursed by father time as we sit and wait for our time to reunite these "giants of Hollywood" beside our own loved ones--who knows when though. It's all a mixed bag sadness and nostalgia with this scene.

This Dune, imho, still cannot be beaten by the new adaptation. Saw the new movie - even though due to newer technologies/special effects, it may look more polished and glossy, it stumbles in some areas. The score for example. Toto's music was and still is impressive. The score for Dune 2021 at first may sound unique and impressive but it seemed harsh and sometimes the degree of grandeur seems not in tandem with scene, no subtlety.

As good as the latest renditions are, this will always be the Dune I remember. Saw this as kid, didn't understand it at all, but it stuck with me. As you can see from the profile picture, deep into the dunes of White Sands, New Mexico. i fell in love with desert, it's solitude, it's uncompromising nature, promise of death for the unprepared, and the sharpening of those who willing the endure hardship.
