About 'Dune'
Oscar nominee Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival,” “Blade Runner 2049”) directs Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “Dune,” the big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal bestselling book.
A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence-a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential-only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
Villeneuve directed “Dune” from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth based on the novel of the same name written by Frank Herbert. Villeneuve also produced the film with Mary Parent, Cale Boyter and Joe Caracciolo, Jr. The executive producers are Tanya Lapointe, Joshua Grode, Herbert W. Gains, Jon Spaihts, Thomas Tull, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert.

Thoughtful evil, maybe? Not sure. He definitely brought a different nuance to the role than the previous two actors who have played Rabban.

One of the best ensemble casts I've seen in recent years. Even though Timothee, Stellan, Oscar and Javier are the only ones who read the books, the others still sound like they have a solid grasp of the essence of their characters and the themes of the book. Just based on the depth of their answers. Denis must've explained the books to them really well and that just shows how much he really cares about doing it justice.There is no better filmmaker today to direct Dune than him. I haven't seen the movie yet but I have complete faith in it and I'm super excited to see it in a weeks time!!

Ive seen Sharon Duncan-Brewster and Rebecca Ferguson say that they´ve also read the books in other interviews. And I think also Dave Bautista... So technically, the only one who didn´t read the book is Zendaya (who has also read the book, but she said in an "actors roundtable" thingy that she read it after filming the movie, because her casting was a last minute thing... Like, she said she was casted and called to set from one week to another, and one week later she was already back home after filming all of her scenes). So she didn´t have the time to do it before filming.
@Quotenwagnerianer
@Quotenwagnerianer 2 жыл бұрын
I assume they all have read the book. That is what is part of preparing for a role: Going to the source material. The intersting question is rather: Who had read the book before being cast. Javier and Stellan for sure, but who else?

@@lizzic.1126 yr right, and what I'll say here is meant as addendum, not correction of what commenters here just said... taking mushrooms didn't make Herbert a hippie, which was a media created ridicule label media attached a grab bag of derogatory traits in order to tar and feather a wide variety of thoughtfully self-defining individuals who made thoughtful choices to step into livelier ways of being. Herbert was a professor who focused on ecology before USA media was willing, perhaps I should say forced, to admit there was such a concept. It lumped lazy, drug-addled, free-loaders with profoundly inventive musicians, committed inventive community activists, Viet vets who returned from an insane war to first try to get over what it had done to them psychologically and spiritually and then stand up knowing it would invite media vilification to educate all of us to what Viet Nam was really like that was so diff than govt and media portrayed. Everyone who terrified corporate dictation of acceptable attitudes by taking off its pre-fab strait-jacket of human possibilities to embrace self-defining sanity was painted with one same ugly lying tar brush.

Probably the most genuine, sincere, and interesting interview with actors I have ever seen. Coaxed by Cynthia's intelligent and respectful probing, everyone had something interesting and profound to say, with not a hint of presumption or vanity. It really revealed the respect they all had for each other, and how a talented and eloquent group of artists can be inspired and elevated by the vision and passion of an equally talented director.

As a fan of the books, and having watched previous adaptations, I can say with confidence that Villenueve's Dune is the definitive adaptation. He really understood the source material and knew what to highlight and what to leave out (although I would have wanted him to highlight how water is such a scarce resource in Arrakis that its entire politics revolves around water, I knew a movie format wouldn't allow him to do it justice. IMO, only a TV series can allow such a nuanced adaptation) The movie is beautifully shot and scored and only an IMAX experience would truly do it justice. It's such a tragedy this came out during COVID as I feel it would have broken box office records, much like Avatar. It's a must-see big screen spectacle, so it's a real shame COVID has limited many people from seeing it on a big screen.
@tracys169
@tracys169 2 жыл бұрын
100% agree with this sentiment. I wanted so much to see cultural nuances in Arrakis, it'd have been grand if they could show all those. But I also know that those types of details belong to a longer series, rather than a movie.

The love that Denis has for the book shines through in the film and you can see that his passion inspired the cast. The attention to detail and nuance was never better encapsulated than in the scene where Jessica is selecting her housekeeper and is interrupted as she starts to say '... of death'. So pertinent to the story.
