About Dune:
A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence-a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential-only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

@@leewolf6434 this is the best thing I like about this movie, next to the story, battles and politics (which are scaringly similar to the modern geopolitics), the fact that everything is minimalist yet so large it will trigger megalophobia. The moment the first scene played in front of my eyes, I knew this would be different in terms of visuals. As a movie nerd, the visuals of this movie was eye-candy to me. The lighting, the harsh contrast between light and dark, the edge-lighting, all of it was absolutely magnificent. It is a movie made with technology from the earth and yet I couldn't put my finger on why it looked so different. Ultimately it was captured on a camera. I still cant put my finger on why it looks so different compared to other movies. It looks so different compared to other movies but so similar compared to video games. The visuals of this movie gave me the feeling that I was watching a 2.5 hour long cut-scene from a hyper-realistic video game. 2 more movies come to mind talking about amazing visuals. Arrival and Annihilation. But those movies still feel like movies. This one just doesn't. I don't know why and I love it.

The first trailer with Eclipse by Pink Floyd had me hooked. I decided to read the book. I liked it. I was honestly upset by the ending in part one because I expected them to make it much further than that. I guess I got lost in the time and didn’t realize it was almost over. But now that part 2 has been announced, I’ll say it’s definitely the closest thing to a masterpiece we have seen in this genre for awhile. Still don’t think it’s a masterpiece, it skips a lot from the book and what I consider to be key lore details and secondary plots as well that make the characters more endearing and interesting. But I’d say 9/10. Maybe 9.5. My grievances are minor.

Just a late thought I’d like to add: I have been a lifetime Star Wars fan. I grew up wearing out our VHS copies of the OT and making my parents buy new ones (as they could, big family with lots of kids) with each new release on tape of the OT. As I was reading Dune, I kept saying to myself “George, you really pulled from more than just Flash Gordon serials and The Hidden Fortress.” So much of Dune felt like it was a trailblazer for that sort of material to be accepted by a more general audience. Having read Dune has me interested in more science fiction that was created prior to George Lucas making Star Wars in ‘77. I currently have Dune: Messiah and Issac Asimov’s Foundation waiting on my bookshelf. Thanks to any of you who take the time to read my long-winded comment, I just enjoy talking with peers online in a positive manner about shared interests. It is refreshing when considering today’s often vitriolic behavior online.

Around 3:12 mark it sounds like Hans Zimmer used a Sitar on some of the parts. So far the soundtrack sounds so ethereal and otherworldly!

I'm 99% sure it's layered hurdy-gurdys, which is wild and awesome.

@@hettbeans I thought of hurdy gurdy as well. But i think it has another layer of sarangi which is a eastern instrument

I know the Bagpipes singular piece was actually played by Guthrie Govan on electric guitar.

Hans Zimmer is a jeniuous! I wish Diana Ankudinova's singing of it was here. She sang it just recently, and it sounds so much more powerful!

I can imagine when Hans Zimmer and his music crew finished this piece and played it back they all where bewildered but the sheer sci-fi they just created.

I watched this last night in IMAX with my friend and I turned to her after the credits rolled and said, “we just witnessed the equivalent to seeing A New Hope on opening day.” Denis and Hans never miss. What a film.
