Dune Part 2 will change movies forever. In this video essay, I discuss why Dune 2021 is a masterful science fiction film that sets up Dune Part 2 to be even better. Denis Villeneuve's Dune Part 2 will change the movie landscape through its source material and also its filmmaking potential.
Paul Atreides leads nomadic tribes in a battle to control the desert planet Arrakis. Dune is an upcoming epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve with a screenplay by Jon Spaihts, Villeneuve, and Eric Roth. The film is an international co-production of Canada, Hungary, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It is the first of a planned two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, which will cover roughly the first half of the book. The film stars an ensemble cast including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

When are you finishing your review of other DUNE renditions ie your Syfy Children of DUNE review, I'm not hyping on the second film because I over hyped on this first one and am only satisfied it wasn't embarrassing made a profit and after BEGGING pathetically, Denis & fans got WB to approve the obvious sequel film & possible third. But I will always be mad Dune fans can't have both detailed SOURCE story quality like LOTR Game of Thrones were for those fans AND visual cinematic production epicness. I'm not into twisting reality to say the King wears clothing when things were pretty naked. When some non heard of MCU Eternals rakes in the $ like a snap more than DUNE, I'm just happy to have gotten ANOTHER DUNE performance to enjoy not gonna spew my guts worshiping anyone/thing which is the lesson of DUNE anyway.

@@klyanadkmorr the book source material stretches too wide, too much ideas / concepts/ feelings to pack into a movie. so the director has to go narrow with it. i thought he did fine considering the grandness of the source, he chose to make it narrow and it worked. he also got shields depicted properly. david lynches shields were just a mistake and should never have been made like that. very laughable cgi for david lynch shields.

@@JackJackKcajify Lynch movie was made in 1984, no CGI was available 37 years ago. The shields were animated by hand over every frame, like traditional cartoons. Yes the movie has its flaws, but the visual effects are incredibly good considering the technical resources available. They did a very good job for a 1984 sci-fi movie. It makes no sense to compare the technology available back then with the one used in 2021 movies. If someone else makes another DUNE movie 40 years from now, the 2021 version is going to look old, clunky and dated too.

@@JackJackKcajify No you are just giving an excuse for failure, like most of this generation mostly due to WB/ATT wanting profit over proper artistic faithful creation. Denis was given time constraints because there are more scenes filmed to have given quality context and proper inclusions of concepts feeling characters & story arc but were cut just so we could see 5min of ships taking off or tons of people standing for ceremony with bagpipes. Also we were told to jump beg and kiss ass just in HOPES for a sequel so Denis sliced the movie to fit as much in to seem atleast a full story but for me it should have ended just with facing the worm after Paul swears to Jessica he will stay to avenge his father(he CANNOT LEAVE HE IS ADDICTED TO THE SPICE Denis deleted that FACT), which is more inline with the books. This movie is cinematically BEAUTIFUL but lacking in quality story & character depth which DUNE REQUIRES like LOTR & GoT got, not MCU oh it kind hints at things or Star Wars needs to be ackshun fun = Best ever? NOT

The fact remains that Deni has never made a bad film, some of his films require an attention span that most people do not have in this day and age. I've read the book many times, but considering the genre of fantasy and syfy, there hasn't been a film this well done and ground breaking since fellowship of the ring came out many years ago. I'm glad it doesn't have the pop culture following as well, that's usually what ruins franchise's anyway. Like I said before you have to have an attention span to love this film, people who don't love it just aren't interested enough in the setting the story and characters, which were all done very well and intelligently if you actually watch the film closely. It's a slow burn but this isn't the typical syfy, it's a philosophy driven story on fear, and begs the moral question of how far would you go to avenge your family. Considering the young man in the story would convince the universe that he is christ like figure to restore his family name is something off the scale and different. That's just one aspect of many revolving factors bc there are many villians and other protagonists that make family choices. These two films will be looked back on as masterpieces that world wasn't ready for at the time. Just very misunderstood bc its so far from the typical mind-numbing movies we are used to Hollywood popping out.

I'm so glad Dune was a commercial success. I hope it will bring more films like this to the big screen. I am honestly tired of The rock in a jungle adventure or another fast and furious with the scriptwriting being done by a 10-year-old. This film has really given me hope that the infinite budget, cut & paste format set in place by Disney for the last 15 years can get usurped. The origins of sci fi were meant as critiques and cautionary tales on humanity and its multiple facets. Maybe the genre can really get back to being that with villeneuve.

Kurt Vonnegut knew it.. :) But how Disney taints old heroes just to hype up some Mary Sue is disgusting. They were always big on removing meaning from movies, by removing the part where the hero pays the price. The Little Mermaid is amazing story and has a deep meaning. By removing her death at the end they killed the story, but hey they put in a funny crab that is dancing around and has an accent!

He made something that I and many others have always wanted. You see, there are great, thoughtful, deep films about some mundane crap like a 32 year old artist struggling with memories of his boring childhood and bipolar disorder. These films are for you to really watch and think about. They explain very little as to never break the audiences immersion. And then there are fantastic movie series, anywhere from 2 to 18 installments. Each one spends at least a half hour clumsily explaining the plot of what just happened in the previous acts so that Joe Facebook can keep up. These movies are like going to see the awe-inspiring northern lights in Iceland with your idiot flat-earther cousin. Dune is the best of both worlds.

And that's why the movie is counted as a failure from the money making side. Furthermore, everyone familiar with the books knows storyarc. Audiences are not interested in any non-male non-savior story. Let's look at Matrix. Philosophy? Heroic sacrifice? Love? Dialogue is more than 3 sentences? Nooooooo. My depressive guess is: Matrix Ressurrections will flop moneywise, just like Dune 2. All while Spiderman threehundredseventyfive or Jurrassic World fortyseven will make 1 bil $ each. + toy sells. + games. +merch like toothbrush and bedsheets. Or any movie with the Rock.

I wish that it was at least 15 to 30 mins longer. I mean I haven't met anyone who watched it that wasn't so deeply enthralled in the story, that when it Ended, almost all said that they were SHOCKED to discover that 2.5 Hrs had Blasted On BY.. and I have yet to hear someone complain about pacing, story lulls dragging on too long. If anything, one common Complaint was that it actually felt kind of Rushed. That they, like so many others have said, Actually Wished that it was actually just a bit longer! Which is something One Rarely Hears When discussing 2.5 hour long films. As for myself, I just keep on hoping that despite what Denise has said Numerous Times already, about the Final Theatrical Cut being his Final and Only cut of the film. I can't help but pray that if not his friends at Legendary Pictures, then perhaps someone like His longtime friend Chris Nolan, or anyone for that matter, talks Him into Eventually Releasing A Full and Unabridged version of the Films... of BOTH Parts 1& 2, as well as for Dune Messiah

Well done !!! Part 2 should be wonderful and will be especially enjoyable as it will be only theatrical released. I think the story can be properly told in a 2 and a half hour movie but could easily see this as a 3 hour epic although I’m sure the studio will push for a much shorter run time. I think it would be smart to tighten the story up just in case the trilogy idea hots too much resistance. I do hope the 3rd is given the go ahead based on early screenings, etc instead of making him wait for critic and fan feedback again

Dune Messiah is a short book, and doesn't really have the substance to be a film on its own (at least not one that anyone but the most hardcore Dune fan would want to watch). So the most sensible thing would be to either adapt it and the whole of Children of Dune into a single film, or adapt them as one story across two films.

Villeneuve does not intend for the Dune film series to stop at Messiah. He just said it's only himself who plans to direct until Messiah because this will close out the character arc of Paul Atreides which is what he's most interested in. And then another director can pick up wherever he leaves it. To me, the true ending of the first Dune book is God Emperor so I hope we get up to there at least.

The cinematic release 9f The Fellowship of the Ring was 23 longer than Dune. It is 23 minutes that Dune would have benefited enormously from, in terms of character development and world building. I always thought that the reason they could never really do a decent version of dune for the populace is the simple reason that most of them wouldn't understand it unless spoon fed the intricacies of the story, hence the former best known dune movie (1984) ,which I loved but was really in no way par to the books at all, or the following Herbets Dune and Children of Dune, both entertaining in their own rights but blistering hot irons into the eyes of anyone that has read the books. The first part of this movie was done very well and the fact that the 2nd part was ever in any contention of being made amazed me as much as the stupidity of those referring to part one as a whole single movie. For anyone that has read the book I feel that this adaptation is final vindication and hopefully Jodorowsky is waiting for part two as much as I am 😁😁😁 Love your post and a new sub is yours 👍

I’ve been into Dune since I was in high school back in the 1970’s. I went to the theatrical debut of David Lynch’s 1984 production of the movie- I liked Lynch’s interpretation with some minor exceptions such as the Baron Harkonnen whom he portrayed as a maniacal character frothing at the mouth, rather than the cold calculating sociopath that Frank Herbert constructed. This was corrected, IMO, in the new version. Although the oil bath, I think, was an homage to Lynch’s production, it didn’t actually exist in the books. Herbert himself made the analogy between Arrakis and spice production to the world economy and oil production in the middle east. I will be greatly interested to see Part Two when it is released.

I know that the Zoombies deserve their own version of Dune, with a huge budget and all the popular Zoomer stars in it. I enjoyed it, but most of what I enjoyed wasn’t the virtually line-by-line mimicry of Lynch’s script, but the massive FX and set design that such a huge budget can produce. Other than that, with all the uber-excited Zoombies in the theater going ape as the movie ended, I remember thinking, it’s not all THAT great. I still love Lynch’s ‘moody’ version, with his take on the Baron and the Harkonnens and the Spice-eaters meeting with the Emperor-being awesome and bizarrely portrayed-with the sound track by Toto and the amazing cast. In fact, the more I hear people rave about this one, the more I appreciate the Lynch film for what it was able to do.
