"He who controls the Spice, controls the Universe". Join us Fam, as we react to Dune. This is one of the best Sci-Fi movies to come out in years, and based on my favorite book. We have both seen the 1984 David Lynch version, and are excited to see how Denis Villenueve has adapted his vision. "Bless the Maker and his water". Enjoy Fam!

"Jessica knew the meaning of the blade." - Actually, no, she didn't, she nearly blew it in fact, but Mapes prematured excitement saved her. She figured a blade is made to kill and so was going to say "a maker of death". She was unaware that a maker also meant the worms in the Fremen beliefs - "a maker of the deep desert". This is a particular aspect that I liked about the book - how both Jessica and Paul sometimes unintentionally confirmed the prophecy. Just like the Shadout Mapes scene, some people just want to see what they want to see so desperately, because it's the only hope they have.

Its rare to see a genuine reaction from people who know the books but don’t have seen the movie… the second part is a masterpiece even if some aspects of the whole story has been avoided for timing purposes. I watched both parts in IMAX theater and it was the best experiences I ever had in my life when it comes to movies . Denis Villeneuve is a magician !

At 17:30 it's definitely meant to be ambiguous what Paul is referring to, because as you say Villeneuve had earlier in the film inserted Paul calling Gurney "old man" and recognizing him by his footsteps, so due to that it's meant as a more literal meaning that he can hear Gurney coming up behind him; but a fact that is sadly not mentioned anywhere in the film (it should have been part of the exposition from Paul's documentaries in my view) is that the Fremen refer to the sandworm as the "Old Man of the Desert", and as we know these worms typically stake out intruders on their territory by rhythmic noises like footsteps. It's definitely a genius move by Villeneuve, and another thing to note is that Paul would probably have a very hard time actually hearing Gurney's footsteps, so even for this more literal interpretation it would imply that Paul was in that moment attuned to the vibrations in the sand just like the sandworm.
@CocktailFlicks
@CocktailFlicks 5 ай бұрын
I thought it genius too, because I remember the sandworm being referred to as Old Man of the Desert too. I think in that instance, it was left for both interpretation and the circumstances surrounding their situation!

Fun fact the Greeks actually had a type of bagpipes, people just don’t usually like the sound of it because us modern people don’t think it fits them. I think the Greeks are usually assigned Neapolitan music from Italy in most films as it incorrectly became what people think the music of Greece sounds like.

Though, in the book the Harkonnens do indeed use lasguns during the assault on Arrakeen. Thufir expresses shock at it, and at the scale of the attack.

@@CocktailFlicks definitely worth a second viewing. I would’ve went again the day after. I know the story from the OG movie and I’m glad he gave you it new life and a chance to be epic. It was too ambitious for the 80’s, but a solid attempt to compete with Star Wars. I know the books were first, but visually we know who inspired who.

With respect to the dinner, what you describe is not from the book but from the mini-series. In the book, the dinner is just with local 'nobels' including a smugler. The emperor only arrives on Arrakis (maybe for the first time) at the end of the book. Part 1 did leave out a lot of things, but stays close to the book. (I spend a lot of time comparing the transcript with the book.) Part 2 has some substantial changes compared to the book.

That's fair, I do remember a dinner scene from the book, in which Kynes took someone's words a challenge, but nothing came of it. I know it's not part of the point, but that does come to mind none the less. I guess I got the two mixed up. thanks for the correction!

In Mini-series It was Princess Irulan that shows up at the dinner. Not the Emperor. The princess played a much bigger role in the mini-series than just a narrator. Was an active character. working with Paul .

Eh, this is too harsh towards the Bene Gesserit, IMO. The entire point of the Kwisatz is that the Reverent Mothers have looked into the future and seen the end of mankind. They have sought a way around this for centuries but always come up empty because they can only see half of the story - the female half. So they needed a male perspective, but couldn't get one because the waters of life - the liquid which changed a sister to a Reverend Mother - always killed any male who tried it. So they set about on a surreptitious breeding project to create a male mind that could withstand the change. The planned end was to be the child of Feyd Rautha and the female child who would've been Paul (if Jessica had followed orders and produced a daughter). Harkonnens were "easy" for the Bene Gesserit to control, Atreides were not ("Defiance in the eyes, like his father"), hence the original plan for the Kwisatz to be Harkonnen. And when I say "control," that's not necessarily a nefarious thing. Communing with past lives, past personalities, often overwhelmed weaker minds. "Control" could just as easily mean "supported and kept in control." If Paul had failed, and if the planned Harkonnen/Atreides heir had failed, the Bene Gesserit would've simply taken two steps back and started from there. There was never only one singular chance for the Bene Gesserit to succeed. Plans within plans within plans.

The origin of the Atreides house is Greek, but it's so far in the future that their cultural markers wouldn't just be Greek. The average human barely knows the name "Earth", if in fact they've ever heard the name. Bagpipes are fine.

My counter to the laser at least for the Sardaukar troops is they were using it as a cutting implement & were after people known to have been abducted in the middle of their sleep.
@CocktailFlicks
@CocktailFlicks 5 ай бұрын
a laser being used as a cutting tool makes sense, I could get behind that. They were also using it to try to bring down an Ornithopter from the looks of it, and its shields were up. If that Laser had hit the shield, then the reaction would have been Nuclear according to the lore. IDK, maybe I'm over thinking this whole thing. I love the movie, I'm just ruined by the book. lol
@orutakawatenga8820

@@CocktailFlicks I think with Duncan's Ornithopter they were blindly hoping the pilot was flying unshielded to gain speed and agility, perhaps even that was a Harkonnen gunner at work, but I know the Sardies would only use such a risky tool if no other method would guarantee results.
@xen0bia
@xen0bia 4 ай бұрын
There are a few possibilities. In the case of the Sardaukar using a lazgun to carve the door, they probably knew from Harkonnen intel that Fremen don't use shields. As for the laser used againt Duncan's orni, it might be that the initial rockets that were shot at him blew out his shield and therefore was no longer protected by one. OR you know, maybe the entire laser versus shield going nuclear is a detailed that was abandon because any instances of that happening in book don't happen in the movie, therefore making it superfluous, especially when you have viewers unfamiliar with Dune and whom are already pretty overloaded with new information. It may not have felt important to maintain that piece of lore. It also allow for pretty cool VFX that you might have not gotten otherwise. My 2 cents.

I smiled, hit the ‘like’ button, & thought, “this is indeed one of your favorite books,” the first time it was pointed out that the visions are merely the potential futures-It’s what ultimately makes Paul an anti-hero, the difference between what he sees is possible and what he chooses to do. Yeah, I do not know if the “Part 3,” Dune Messiah film has been officially green lit but Denis Villeneuve has been talking about a Part 3 a whole hell of a lot more confidently than he had been about Part 2, so I choose to believe it will cone to pass. I always recommend people read the first two books, (since Dune Messiah is sort of an epilogue that Frank Herbert tacked on to Dune to really drive home the point he was making,) and then if you enjoy that arc, follow-up with the next four books. Because y’all seem to be into the lore side of things, definitely check out the Dune Encyclopedia. Also, a good podcast that goes into some real deep dives into the world of Dune is called Gom Jabbar: A Dune Podcast, (the episode I listened to recently was a deep-dive into Liet Kynes.)

The gom jab bar test is nothing to do with Persia all gain or “goodness “ :this was the failing of the Benefit Gesserit; they esteemed power over the considerations of ordinary human empathy which was the terrible failing of most of the cultures in this future world. This failure was only cured by the God emperors “ Golden Path” 4 centuries of tyranny which humanity could never forget. Paul saw multiple futures where this immoral culture of power politics would lead to humanities complete destruction.
