It's not a remake of the 1984 Dune movie, it's a new take on attempting to make a movie of the Dune book.

Just in case you were unclear, the prophecies/chosen one isn't your classic story archetype like you see in Star Wars or Harry Potter, it's a manufactured prophecy created by the Bene Gesserit to control the Fremen by creating a religion for them and controlling the bloodlines of the Great Houses to get to their ideal person they can control to become the Fremen's messiah. It's why they were mad at Jessica for having a son instead of daughters and part of why they allowed House Atreides to be wiped out. Excited for the reaction for part 2, it was an incredible experience at cinemas!

I'm glad you pointed that out I was going to. This is all cynical manipulation. I may be wrong I think they are doing that so that the Bene Gesserit can gain control of Dune and the spice should they need to. Plans within plans.
@rikk319

The Bene Gesserit create such myths and influence religions on many planets, not just Arrakis. The fremen's lisan al-gaib is not necessarily the Bene Gesserit's kwisatz haderach. They are one of the triad of those who supposedly control the galaxy--the Bene Gesserit handle religion, the Spacing Guild handles banking/trade, and the Emperor handles the military/politics.

At this point in the story you're probably confused, but without going into spoiler territory you can kind of tell that Paul doesn't really see the future. He can see snippets of possible futures based on the actions he takes. Also something the movie doesn't go into is that of all the fighters in the galaxy the Emperor's Sardaukar are the strongest in the empire because they are violent prisoners trained on a death world, but they are also a secret, brought out only when one of the Great Houses gets out of line, and we learn that the Fremen are unknown to the emperor as even greater fighters than his Sardaukar because they grow up and live on an even harsher planet than the Sardaukar live and train on. So that's ONE reason why the emperor wanted to wipe out house atreides, not to mention many others that might be spoiler-y
@8301TheJMan
@8301TheJMan Ай бұрын
Exactly, and this was similar to why House Corino backed the war on House Ginaz, who produced the only warriors about as elite as the Sardauker, but unfortunately despite being such elite fighters - they weren't very numerous, (when compared to the other Great Houses), and were ganged up on and eventually overwhelmed was all but annihilated years before the events before this film. Duncan was trained as a Ginaz swordmaster and seeing as how Ginaz was longtime allies of Atreides, Duncan was brought in to train House Atreides's legions and along with Gurney- turned them into the finest fighting force in the Imperium - next to the Sardauker of course. And this was achieved in a few years, so in a few decades of this training, (even without bringing in the Fremen), Atreides' military may very well have been elite enough to compete with the Sardauker, and this very reason was the initial impetuous for the Emperor beginning to fear House Atreides. The Sardaukar were said to be so elite, and numerous, that it would take the entirety of the Landsraad, (aka The Great Houses), to unite in order to defeat the Emperor's legions

Wow I read the book and I’ve never thought about that detail, does that mean a shield would protect someone from an explosion? Could a person with a shield survive a huge blast because the shield would just negate the blast wave?

You can kind if tell that Paul's visions aren't scene for scene what's going to happen. Some things are possible futures and other scenes are metaphorical (at least that's my interpretation)
@herbertkeithmiller
@herbertkeithmiller Ай бұрын
That is correct. Also knowing the future sometimes changes it. If you were to have a vision of yourself going out for a gallon of milk and getting hit by a car you would avoid that, thus changing the future.

I loved your reaction you guys followed this complex story very well. 4:09 The voice and the other abilities of the Bene Gesserit are not magical powers. This is an easy mistake to make. They are skills. Regarding the voice it is a tone of command that people automatically respond to. Sort of like yelling at your dog and having it jump without thinking. This is a skill that takes years to get even partially good at. The Bene Gesserit have extraordinary control over their bodies they can slow their heart rates, control pain and fear, neutralize poisons, choose whether or not to become pregnant and the sex of the baby. It is control of the human body and mind to the 11th degree develop over thousands of years. In this universe people have a small natural ability to see the future. The Bene Gesserit have for the past few thousand years been breeding people to enhance this power. So far only females have gained a small control over this. They take a special drug called the water of life that enhances their ability. It is always been deadly for males. The end result of the Bene Gesserit breeding or eugenics program is to produce a male They can take the water of life and see forward and backward in time. The end result will be the Kwisatz Haderach.

@PhilBagels
@PhilBagels Ай бұрын
The 1984 version was good, but it suffered from studio interference and the fact that they tried to condense the whole book into one movie. Many things are left out when an epic book is adapted into a movie. And some things get changed or added. True for Dune, and true for LotR, and true for Harry Potter, and true for all the comic book movies. Studio executives still haven't gotten the idea through their thick skulls that there is an audience for longer movies, and that the movies to not have to be dumbed down. Yes, this current version is better, but it is worth seeing the 1984 version, IMO, even though more things were changed from the book (sometimes, ridiculously so), just to get a more complete picture of the forces in the universe, particularly the Spacing Guild, which you barely see in this version. The book is always better than the movie. You might want to read the book. It's great, and you can see some really good parts that were left out, and many of the things that weren't quite clear in the movie are explained in better detail.

From what I interpret it, Paul can see what is supposed to be as the future but since he is "the chosen one", he used the vision to change the outcome of what was supposed to happen
@rikk319
@rikk319 Ай бұрын
In this movie Paul sees possible futures, and only has an unclear vision of them. Only the kwisatz haderach can see all possible futures clearly. Also--if someone is a possible kwisatz haderach too, then Paul can't see the future clearly around them, as they can influence the future as well.

This is not a remake of the 1984 film. It's an adaptation of the 1965 novel. Also, try not to think of his visions as right or wrong. But rather, possibly outcomes. Depending on choices made. If you know the future. You can change it.

I like the 1984 version better. It tells the whole story in one film, whereas this Dune drags things out, makes at least a trilogy just to give you the same information. Technically this is great. The sound is great, but even better in part 2. That doesn’t excuse it for me to string out the tale so they can make more money. And I’m not a fan of Zendaya.
