My local theater is still open, but it has had extra disasters to deal with. It flooded in 2019, so it might have already been closed for renovations during 2020. When it was finally able to reopen, there was a nasty thunderstorm that tore the roof off the theater. It has only recently reopened after the renovations. I guess it is good that they had insurance that covered things.

Dan it might be cool to see what each major studios profits or losses per year are once their final films are closed for the year (usually around this time). So for instance WB 2023 grosses should be almost completely locked in for their major releases so it may be cool to see how they did over the course of the year. Did Barbie do enough to save the WB for the year? Same for Disney, Paramount, etc. might be cool to see how the industry is faring on that macro scale.

Let's see if I can make a comment that ages like old milk: GxK will have a decent performance, mostly due to a bump from Minus One while Ghostbusters will notably underperform (not flop territory, but enough to put the franchise on ice - really not a pun, I'm so sorry). Dune will continue to hold relatively well, but nothing like Oppenheimer did. I'm totally speaking out of my ass, so if I'm wrong, it's because I don't know what I'm talking about 🙃

Dan, just a random thought. In the "Road to Recovery" chart, instead of comparing current figures to 15-19 AVERAGE, could it be better to compare them to the 15-19 MEDIAN? Like for weekend 11 and Beauty & The Beast 2017, many weekend has an "anomaly" that pushes the avg up. Every other year in that timespan on that specific weekend was between 131M and 138M. So the median of 135M would, in my brain atleast, make for better point, as in more indicative of the normal weekend we could expect in mid-March back then.

I think Titanic is when I started following the box office more closely as well. I was 25 when it came out and I went to see it on opening weekend, I think (or the 2nd weekend...definitely in December 1997), because a girl I was dating wanted to go, and I ended up liking it a lot. As I recall, the news articles were proclaiming that the opening weekend was underwhelming given the $200 million budget, and that it might end up another Waterworld level of money loser, but then it just kept going, steadily making around $25 million weekend after weekend for months. This may have been the first time I saw the term "box office legs" used in the media. I got caught up in the Titanic box office phenomenon as it stayed at #1 for so long...which movie would dethrone it? When The Man in the Iron Mask just barely failed to take #1, I had a feeling it would be a few more weeks given the upcoming slate of new releases. I had hoped Titanic would stay #1 until Godzilla came out in May 1998, because I knew that would open big, but it ended up that the Lost in Space film adaptation of the old television show managed to do it in early April. But given how low it opened ($20 million), I hoped Titanic would reclaim the top spot, but once it lost #1, it started dropping quickly and never challenged again. I still kept an eye on Titanic for months as it steadily crept closer to $600 million, but it took nearly a year to get there.
