As much as I love Part 1 I think it’s a missed opportunity for Denis and WB to not release an extended version especially before releasing part 2. Dune universe is huge and they should’ve learned from the success of LOTR..

Honestly, I think it can go either PG-13 or R. The first thing that came to mind that would garner the latter are the scenes with the Harkonnens. They murder, exploit and abuse men, women and children in the book, so if they choose R maybe Denis will push the violence in that way to critique the abuse of power amongst the houses. If they choose PG-13 it'll probably be suggested at like Part One. I personally hope he goes the R route, because the dark nature of the oppression and control over every single planet and their populations is one of Herbert' critiques I really want to see explored.

Two things: - Beast's decapitations of the Atreides soldiers were blurred out by the fire. The LOTR trilogy had a significant amount of decapitations. - The scene where Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli search for Merry and Pippin in the Two Towers had the Uruks bodies piled up and burned by Eomer and the Rohirrim... And those films are PG-13 (and there are plenty of other scenes that have a lot of brutality in that trilogy). The only R rated sequences I found in this movie were Paul's visions of Duncan's death, Chani's hand drenched, as well as the Sardaukar recruits sacrifice (like you mentioned Rali). So, what I'm trying to say is that Dune part 2 could still be PG-13 but will be as intense as the previous film. I still hope part 1 gets an extended edition. And yes, the scene that I think will be most intense will possibly be Shaddam IV wanting more cowbell. Nice work Rali. Keep it up.

Pretty sure that the original script for Dune: Part 1 did have a Water of Life sequence, where it was depicted as a general orgy: "The mood is ecstatic, communal. Some Fremen sway in a trance. Others lie staring at the ceiling. Some cling to each other, *erotically*, shedding their robes."

I don't think we even have a PG-15 rating here in the US. It goes from PG-13 straight to R. As long as you make a really good film, you can fill seats in a theater easily. Especially if those films win Best Picture or even get nominated. I've seen intensely violent films like Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, 300, Braveheart and even The Passion of The Christ. And Schindler's List. And The Kingdom of Heaven. Obviously, none of those were meant for the eyes of small children and delicate wallflowers, but they were all extremely powerful, impactful and many won various awards and had major word-of-mouth, theater seat filling power. Now at the end of the day, as an adult who's been an adult for quite some time, I don't need the movies I watch sterilized. I don't want them sterilized. Show me blood in a battle scene. If I watch a war combat scene, I expect that there's going to be blood, it SHOULD have some blood. Not for gratuitous purposes, but for Realism's sake. So yeah, give me an R rated Dune. The teenagers are going to sneak in or come in with their parents or older siblings anyway. I remember seeing Scarface with Al Pacino when I was 18. Now Dune Part Deux doesn't need to be THAT violent of course, but I've got no problems with it being Gladiator, 300 or Braveheart level violent. How many of us visiting this particular KZfaq channel are kids after all? I suspect we're all adults here. As for sex & nudity, I agree with Secrets that an orgy depiction for The Water Of Life scene is Not necessary and not even accurate to Herbert's source material. So leave that out. And once again, I still want an Extended Cut version of Parts 1 & 2 on 4K Blu-Ray.

Ok fremen are inspired by arab-speaking and arab-influenced communities. Could you imagine if the spice orgy was chorographed like that ritual dancing that some muslim communities sometimes do? There was even a TED talk about how rythm and and dancing can produce visions and extatic states in people, it would so cool to have this concept intertwined with how spice influences the mind Edit: apparently it's part of sufi tradition, I'd love to learn more about this so if anyone knows more about this please enlighten me!

There is a ton of Sufism in Dune. This is partially because Herbert was inspired by The Sabres of Paradise, a book about the Caucasus Wars. Lead by Shamil, himself a convert to sufism, he helps convert fighers all over the Caucasus to defend his lands against the Russian Empire. Herbert expanded more on the spiritual side of sufism, and left the jihad and fanatical Muridism up to our imaginations. BTW, dirvish dancing DOES appear in later Dune books as practiced by a large group of pilgrims of Paul's religion.

I'm pretty confident that Villeneuve can imply a lot of the violence and sexual content without having it being done implicitly onscreen. A lot of it can be suggested and then pick and choose the most important elements shown explicitly onscreen without pushing over the pg13 rating. I would be very surprised if they are aiming for a 15 certificate. Censors can sometimes be more lenient when something is vitally important to the story. Even if they ask for a few seconds here and there to be trimmed.
@secretsofdune
@secretsofdune Жыл бұрын
Yeah I think the edit itself will play a large part in that. But I'm sure they'll come to a point where a decision has to be made. Keep this in and make it a 15 (or more) or tone it down (or remove it entirely) and make it a PG-13.
@adrianmcmahon5731
@adrianmcmahon5731 Жыл бұрын
@@secretsofdune I'm in the UK and historically the BBFC has usually been more lenient with violence when it's inclusion was integral to the story especially if it was a film based on a culturally important book or play. Villeneuve is a very visual filmmaker but he's smart (and subtle) enough to know gore is not the only way to get the point across. On your point about no deleted scenes being available so far from Part 1 I am wondering if they are being held back as elements from them might potentially spoil plot points and direction Villeneuve wants to take the story and he doesn't want to potentially telegraph where he might go with Part 2, and Dune Messiah (fingers crossed that part 2 does well enough for the first 2 books being brought completely to screen).
@DuneInfo
@DuneInfo Жыл бұрын
The American PG-13 rating reason that is given is rather vague on the website: "sequences of strong violence, some disturbing images and suggestive material" In the UK the BBFC provides much more detail for their reasoning for the "12" certificate. Violence Scenes include close-quarters combat with bladed weapons, including slashes and stabbings resulting in brief sight of blood. There is occasional focus on bloodied blades, or blood on hands and clothes. Other sequences depict large scale attacks in which ships and buildings are bombed and explode, and a number of deaths caused by toxic gas. Threat and horror Scenes of threat include characters being pursued and attempting to escape giant worms, flying through a sandstorm, fleeing from explosions, being held at knife point, and being targeted by remote devices that inject poison. A character is left paralysed by poison, and his body is seen naked in a chair as his enemies mock him. There are occasional mild sex references, including in a sequence in which men's comments suggest threatening intent towards a woman. There is use of mild bad language ('ass') and milder terms including 'God', 'hell', and 'damn'. Occasional reference is made to the hallucinogenic properties of a fictional substance. The UK and the US have often varied in which aspects (language, gore, nudity, implied actions etc) are used for rating films. William Castle's horror films were designed for kids in the US, but in the UK the BBFC ratings excluded the target audience.
@secretsofdune
@secretsofdune Жыл бұрын
Would have never imagined that "God" was considered mild language. I guess in the sense of "using it in vain" perhaps? I find it difficult to imagine a "fair amount of blood" in part two as Timothee says without it being a higher certificate than a PG-13 unless those scenes will be bloodless (like Marvel) or with those scenes cult entirely... Would they dare make the certificate higher at the risk of reducing audiences or go for a milder version of violence in Part Two?

It's dune, relax, it'll come in due course I am sure and is about due given the movies and the time since the last series done by the Sci-Fi channel, which although on a tiny budget with mostly unknown actors, was quite well done I thought. But it would be nice to see a 4 season Dune show that could tell the story in full over the years as things progressed. It is very hard to build masses of political intrigue and backstories that span thousands of years, into a movie. I always felt that is why no one has ever attempted to put Warhammer to the big screen, because on paper it works great but to put all that into a movie either ends up feeling to abbreviated and shallow or convoluted to buggery.

When violence is sanitised to the extent that it was in part one it becomes unrealistic and silly. They're not meant to be playing pillow fights! It's a violent book and toning the violence down is inappropriate. The Water Of Life scene could also be sanitised for the fact that they're using drugs. Again, that is totally wrong for 'Dune'. The novel was written in the 60s, the drug use is central to the story and Frank Herbert himself was a drug user. If they want to make 'Dune' properly they should make it a 15 cert, and if that means reducing the budget I don't think that would compromise the film.

But one reason for deleted scenes of Dune, Part 1 not being released could well be that there are plans for extended versions of these movies some time after Part 2 has been released on streaming and physical media. If Part 2 and maybe a Dune Messiah movie are great successes, there may be a chance for such extended editions being released which may have an R and 15 rating, respectively. I would welcome such editions of the movie, especially with IMAX aspect ratios.

There is that possibility. It's either there IS a plan in place or there IS NOT a plan at all. The latter is what worries me. We would have to play the extremely long game in trusting them to deliver in the end. I cannot speak for everyone but I'm not so sure that I have that level of trust within me.

The film MUST include scenes with blood! Moisture is the centermost element in this book/film. If you're going to have battle scenes with knife fighting, there will be lots of throat slashing and abdominal stabbings which will produce blood! And the final knife-fight between Paul and Feyd MUST be bloody! *BOTH MUST BE SLASHED AT LEAST 0NCE! ... IN A KNIFE-FIGHT, YOU'RE GOING TO GET CUT!* Denis Villneuve must RECONSIDER providing us with an EXTENDED/ULTIMATE CUT! *DUNE is NOT JUST A MOVIE ... When other big film makers like Denis Villeneuve or Christopher Nolan would start to push the production companies behind to their limits or create their projects more like Ridley Scott (one of the greatest producers of all time), we could have movies like Inception, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight etc. at least rated for PG-15 and movies like Blade Runner 2049, Dune etc. as Rated-R. Wouldn't that be awesome? Money always was more important and that's why Dune Part 2 will also be Rated PG-13 and not really bloody. But hey... a Director's Cut would be amazing.

Will it actually make a huge financial difference if it is released as an R? Kindergarten kids come in to school talking about watching SAW!!! Some watch far worse. So yes, they might loose a small number at the box office but download sales would not be hindered. In fact, by raising the controversy in news might actually increase online sales. I like the idea releasing a newer, possibly R rated "directors" version of Part One. Honestly, there needs be a reintroduction of the story to some degree and I would hope that DUNE 2 does NOT waste time recounting Part One. In fact, I've always thought that theaters should play Part One prior to showing the new release of DUNE 2.
@secretsofdune
@secretsofdune Жыл бұрын
I definitely think it would. Imagine the same earnings as Marvel movies but cut half the audience out. Perhaps an exaggeration but you get the point. It's like making Frozen for adults. No kids will attend, thats perhaps half in ticket sales. I get your point about controversy selling, I think that could mean it earns a fair amount of money over the years, but I don't think film companies plan and project earnings in that way.

@@secretsofdune You can't compare Marvel movies to DUNE. That's akin to comparing Star Wars of Star Trek to ALIENS or ALIENS vs PREDATOR where alien blood oozes. DUNE is an adult story to begin with, so much so that most adults miss most of the philosophical/religious story behind the scenes. Feyd-Rautha alone is highly an adult only issue if you portray him as the books do. I realize money is the reason why only Part One was made for fear there wouldn't be enough of an audience. But at some point you need to make adult sci-fi instead of Star Wars kid friendly space cowboy and indians.
@secretsofdune
@secretsofdune Жыл бұрын
@@leefury7 I'm comparing it to similar marketing models I've seen with Dune and Black Panther, hence the Marvel comparison as an example. They do often say Dune is Star Wars for Adults. I'm not quite sure I agree fully with that either because I think Star Wars had quite a few adult themes (why is Empire everyone's favorite?) But Dune is definitely more adult in nature.

Makes me think why Frank Herbert describe the water of life ceremony as an orgy?
@secretsofdune
@secretsofdune Жыл бұрын
There's a few reasons. One is that its a commingling (like an orgy) and also in the medieval zen traditions there were groups that came together in a religious sense that also became orgies. I believe Frank Herbert was using this in more of a hypothetical sense rather than an actual orgy, even though some do feel a sense of "heat" in the moment.

Just to have blood for effect is not necessary, they can use a faded red or the knife going in but no blood yet and switch to when they are dead, blood on the ground. I don't think seeing blood is that important it's the over all story that gives the auience entertainment. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE OVER ALL STORY and having an R rating would ruin it.
