A fun story related to this is when building the shinkansen the japanese engineers had issues with getting the train faster because their overhead wires started to oscillate damaging themselfs and the train. At the same time the french TGV was faster the shinkansen so the engineers went over to france to find out what they did differently. Turns out the french werent too precise when putting down the posts for the cables and had some odd meter differences between them while the japanese worked to centi and millimetre tollerances. Due to this the resonance frequency of the wires on the french side was not constant and the train could go faster

This is also why British soldiers "break step" over bridges. In 1831, a bridge collapsed under them, partially because their footsteps matched the resonant frequency of the bridge.

Also a small tip: if you sneeze while holding a full cup combine your uncontrollable movements with an upward movement from your cup, so the downward pressure outmatches the side to side movements

It's quite interesting. The oscillating frequency of liquid inside a cup is about 2 Hz. And it just so happens that the average number of steps a person takes per second is also 2 steps per second. This means you will encourage the cup to spill if you walk at a normal pace. There are 3 ways to overcome this. 1. Get a different-sized/shaped cup 2. Walk in an irregular pattern 3. walk slightly slower than you normally would
@dontworry49454 күн бұрын
this also works for the liquid in my head when i get drunk.
@jacobbass64373 күн бұрын
Another less awkward way to do this that works well is to move the mug in smallish circles.

@Monsterized3014 күн бұрын
Most fluids interact with how sudden your movements are. If it's not a hot substance like coffee, you can hold the cup from the top, moving the center of gravity higher so that you won't spill as easy.
@rosenberg11445 күн бұрын
You can also swing it in a loop with a straight arm. With enough velocity it should stay in the cup.
