Tolkien probably created Smaug based of Fafnir. A greedy Dragon from Norse Mythology, more specifically the Volsung Saga, who has a hoard of treasure.

My party of about 5-6 level 5 adventures freshly banished from Fandalin managed to kill a young dragon. The cleric used Repel Undead to essentially herd the local cult’s undead creations into the tower which the dragon lived in. It was just about to fly off in frustration when the paladin chucked a jar of lightning at it. That’s when things *really* got started.

Eh, the skyrim dragons are actually pretty intelligent. TES lore portrays them to be some of if not the most intelligent creatures in their mythos outside of the aedra/daedra princes (gods).

I've found you guy's channel about 2 weeks ago, and have been binge watching since. I'm about to DM my 1st 5e campaign (more fluent in Pathfinder) in a few days, and your videos have been extremely helpful. While watching the video I got an idea for a Water type Chromatic Dragon dubbed Navy Dragon. They have a swim speed, can breath underwater, and can jet a stream of pressurized fluid that does forced damage. 5ft by 30ft. They plunger loot from sunken and floating ships, and are Coast/Sea dwelling.

The red dragon is on most of the art related to DD from what I’ve seen. Maybe that’s why it’s the default?

Just heard this episode and couldn't believe you guys didn't have 100 youtube subscribers yet. This is by far my favorite D&D podcast as a DM. Partly because you guys AREN'T just another cast of a campaign. You guys do a great job breaking down the concepts and imagining it in ways that I haven't thought of yet. Since you guys are past 100 subscribers now it sounds like it's too late to enter for the Volo Guide To Monsters contest. But nonetheless, I still wanted to leave a comment to say you guys are awesome. One topic I'd love to hear on is PC synergies. My players try to be the best damage dealer in their own right, which is fine, but I'd like to teach them (perhaps by using NPC's as an example), how teamwork works in D&D combat. Would love to hear your guys' thoughts on the matter.

Thank you for listening and I am glad to hear that you enjoy the show! Yes we will likely record episodes where we talk about metagaming and ways to discourage and mitigate it. Mostly by good dming such as your example of showing the players through example how synergy through teamwork works better than everyone trying to be a damage machine.

I like your content and I’m learning a lot about D&D lore cause I never played the games except the computer games. Quick correction though. The Dragons in Elder Scrolls are all highly intelligent beings. Their roars is how the use their magic and fly. Their usage of the Thuum sounds different the the PC. I’d argue that Elder Scrolls dragons lore wise are some of the most powerful of all dragons because the Thuum isn’t magic in the sense of casting even though they can do that too. It’s basically altering the music of Nirn to speak what you wish into existence aka reality warping. Thus they can use the Thuum to reverse time or send things through time. Because of this Dragons are the closest things in Elder Scrolls to Aedra or gods and their leader Alduin is an actual god being an aspect of Akatosh/Aur-El. It’s a lot to put into one post but the 3 most powerful things in Elder Scrolls is The Thuum, tonal architecture which is what the Dwemer used, and Swordsinging.

It has been a while since this episode was recorded so I don't remember what I said then, but I do remember a very intelligent dragon in Skyrim atop the Throat of the World.

The Dungeoncast that dragon was Paarthanax who was Aldiuns right hand man. He was the one who taught the Atmorans, the ancestors to the Nords, how to use the Thuum to defeat the dragons. He then creates the Way of The Voice which is a monk like lifestyle to prevent him from indulging in his base nature. In Elder Scrolls the dragons are very much like the dragons in D&D in that they are very prideful creatures with a desire to dominate others hence why they enslaved the races of men for a time. That’s why Akatosh created the Dragonborn to defeat Aldiun because due to Aldiun taking on the form of a dragon he also took on the will to dominate and thus deviated from his purpose which was to end Time to start it anew. So I’m a way the Dragonborn is an Aasimar since each one is designed by a god for a very specific purpose. Jesus listening to you guy’s lore made me realize just how much Bethesda took from D&D to create the lore for Elder Scrolls lol.

Alduin is not a god. He is the first born of Akatosh who is the God of Time in the ES series. Alduin is a demi god like the Dragonborn, and only the Dragonborn has the power to make sure he stays dead because he can devour a dragon's soul.

The Dragon mythos refer to the symbology behind the merging of the physical and spiritual realms. From Asian cultures, to South American, European, to the Native North Ameican cultures. The snake represents the physical connection and the wings represent the spiritual. It is suggested that the symbology is representative of the connection we should all strive towards by finding that inner balance. That the enlightened ones of our societies have tuned into such balance. I'm not depicting the idea eloquently at the moment but I hope you get what I'm trying to communicate.

All this you said can be said for humans too, because if you look at humans they all commit this stuff, EVEN THE GOOD ones do this stuff too, whether you choose to believe it or not. And in some cases, minus gluttony, elfs are the same. So: dragons, elves, AND humans are the seven deadly sins, and humans hoard things too, it's called collecting.

Dragons in the elder scrolls are all intelligent, most just aren't interested in talking to mortals normally. They are immortal fragments of the god of time. And "classic" depictions of dragons as dumb beasts are spicifically western, eastern ideas of dragons are wise and spiritual beings aligned more with water than fire from my understanding. Also they look different
