Tell me about it. After filming it, I considered not uploading it, but then I thought, "Well, it happened, and it was weird, so why not?" For people who know how absolutely deadly the game normally is, I thought it might be funny to show that one in a thousand game where the dungeon is sleeping. There are other playthroughs on the channel where a lot more happens. The Rildo vs. Thargrim playthrough is the most eventful, and shows what can happen when the dungeon just decides to say, "no," to a player.

I used to play the original (Swedish) version back as a wee child in 1988 or so after school. A vicious game but so much nostalgia even if the English names are a little unusual. The card art in the original was so good - all the traps looked so painful.

Once you know the decks (and remember to watch what comes out of them), and learn the behaviours of the monsters, you can certainly improve your odds. However, the only thing I seem to be good at is falling down bottomless pits.

I really thought it would end in death, and that cave-in was a tense moment. It was pretty exciting getting out on the last turn. I did briefly consider exploring a completely new route out, just to show off a few more tiles, but I'm pretty sure I never would have made it. It's a great game though, as long as you accept that it is often quite unfair, and no matter how good a player you are, sometimes you will get hosed.

Some days the dungeon hates you... most days, actually. But occasionally it lets you live. You are normally poor, but you are alive. Thanks for watching.

Yeah, the back of the first edition rules talks about the original.

I believe it has some similarities with Citadel of Blood, but that's a game I've never actually played. Games Workshop published DragonQuest in 1987, reworking a version of the Swedish game Drakborgen, which was published in 1985. It was later republished by Fantasy Flight Games, who lost the rights a few years ago when they parted ways with Games Workshop. Thanks for watching.

It’s a really fun game. One of my favourites.

I always felt like the D&D board games drew a little inspiration from DungeonQuest. The way you have to keep pressing forwards, laying out tiles based on the direction of the arrows, and then having encounters based on the colour of the arrows. Of course, the D&D games have a lot more monsters in them! I'm not sure where all the bad guys were on this playthrough. Drakon is another game that I felt lifted heavily from DungeonQuest, although that was much more confrontational.

I love these old classic board games. DungeonQuest is one of my favourites. I hope you enjoyed the wander down memory lane.

Yeah, I was very lucky here. This is definitely not a "normal" game of DungeonQuest, although the joy of the game is never knowing what could happen. I played only recently and my adventurer got slowly beaten to death by drawing a combat in every single room he entered. It was brutal to see! There are other playthroughs on the channel where I don't have such an easy time.

Thanks for the feedback; I'll see what I can do. The copy I got is surprisingly excellent condition. The cards and tokens seem hardly used, the paint job on the miniatures is really nice, and it's complete. The only real issues are some very minor scuffs on the surface of one board, dishing to the box lid, and a bit of staple rusting in the rules book.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring - Very nice. You did well there, or rather your wife did well! Do you plan to get the Catacombs and Heroes expansions? I must admit that I rarely use Catacombs, it seems very fiddly and doesn't add that much to the game. The extra heroes do give a bit of variety, and some have their own rules.

@@phildevey6302 I don't like the catacombs expansion, so I don't really have any intentions of hunting it down. If I ever find the heroes at a "good" price I'll pick them up (although I could just proxy them) as the variety is nice and there are some interesting characters like the elf with the dragon familiar, but I do feel like DungeonQuest really is a complete and compact little game out of the box and you can enjoy it forever without the expansion content.

I've been on a dungeon crawler tear lately (tracked down WHQ:ST and WHQ:SoH this fall, backed the new HeroQuest and Bardsung for next year and the year after, and just bought Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion) so I have a mix of things, and really wonder what has the best balance of combat, exploration, and interaction. No D&D adventure games in my collection, oddly, though I have a massive amount of D&D stuff going back to the white box and I've always defined myself as a "D&D player". I like rolling dice so Gloomhaven will be an adjustment, and I wonder if the repeated combat puzzles will just get old. Silver Tower has been fun for the variety, plus I really like the dice-action mechanic. Also will echo the other poster's point about your WHQ retrospective -- it's probably one of the top three things I've watched on KZfaq this year (with the Bard's "Why HeroQuest is so great" :) ) and your coverage probably pushed me into the two WHQ purchases this year. No regrets there -- I'm one coat of matte varnish from completion of painting my Hammerhal figures and even have a box of skaven enroute to probide some more enemies to go with the Chaos Adversary cards.

Yeah, it's basically a random dungeon generator that wants to kill you. It's the perfect beer and pretzels game really, as you don't have to really think about it too much, and it's just stupid fun to watch people dying.

I'm a huge fan of vintage GW titles, but I also think GW have made some excellent games in recent years. I have a cupboard full of them. The new Warhammer Quest games are really good, and I enjoyed the first wave of Underworlds. Standalone titles like Betrayal at Calth and Deathwatch Overkill are good, and I love their bookshelf game series, which has stuff like Blitz Bowl and Space Marine Adventures and are more accessible to a mass audience like DungeonQuest was.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I still have my original Warhammer Quest; I never did anything with it because my buddy had it as well so we always played with his copy.

Not sure what doubts you mean. If I wanted to fake the card pulls I could just stack the deck so it doesn’t matter if you see me pull the card or not. I always present the game as it happens (why in my right mind would I, on purpose, rig a playthrough where most of the rooms are empty?). If you want to see bad things happen check out the DungeonQuest playthrough I did with Rildo, or the Space Crusade playthrough with the ultramarines, which is a hilarious disaster.

Let them at it. It's the best game ever. Just make sure they know the aim is not to win, but to fail gloriously.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring lol. I recall using it as an intro to "proper games" in college and it left people rocking on the floor, clutching their knees 😂 I did recover them with Space Crusade before they got fully hooked.

Every time you play this game, you get a unique little story. The dungeons always seem to have their own narrative in mind.

I really enjoy it. It's not for every games night, certainly not for every player, but it really does make for unforgettable moments around the table.

@@Ben_Mdws This edition is from 1987. It was remade by Fantasy Flight Games, but since FFG and Games Workshop went their separate ways a few years back that version is out of print too. I don't know if Games Workshop is going to let another company print it at some point.

It's an exceptionally deadly game. Memorising card decks, minimising the risks you take, and taking the best ring for your character help a little, but I've been lucky in the playthroughs on the channel, so far.

Nice. I saw they kickstarted a new edition of Drakborgen last year as well. Did you back it?

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring No. I didnt actually. But I got hold of both the original version and the expansion version up here in Sweden. There were two versions of this game. The first one came out in 1985 and the expansion in 1987. The ones that I bought was in nearly mint condition. Very weird for a board game that is allmost 40 years old.

Correct. Like if you pull a reshuffle the deck card everything goes back into that deck.

The arrows indicate which way you are entering the room from, and each arrow colour indicates the type of room you are entering. Yellow arrows indicate corridors you can move through quickly, effectively letting you immediately explore the next room.

A few corridors always helps to beat the clock, or being able to hop onto another player’s route out, or entering the catacombs when using the expansion. This was a very weird game, which was one of the reasons I posted it. There are some other playthroughs on the channel where there’s a lot more going on.

I used to have Drakon, and actually reviewed it on my blog a very long time ago. www.alwaysboardneverboring.com/2015/02/drakon-third-edition.html I definitely felt like Drakon was drawing some inspiration from DungeonQuest, but it was obviously a much more confrontational game.

@@leanderquest Oh, I completely missed your point. I thought something had been lost in translation! This playthrough actually was surprisingly merry for a change. Definitely the nicest the dungeon has ever been to me!

I would say it's very different. I enjoy Talisman, but I think DungeonQuest is significantly better. It's quicker to play (everyone can die in minutes), much funnier, and creates more interesting situations with the way that tiles and cards interact. DungeonQuest can be payed with up to four players, but you can also play solo, and it has a fun rock-paper-scissors combat system which is more interesting than straight dice rolling. Once you add in the Catacombs and Heroes expansions it gets even better as there's a lot more going on. I play DungeonQuest all the time, but Talisman is something I only roll out occasionally.

It shouldn’t. The cards for this game are incredibly flexible. They are the old, super thin punch out kind.

There are lots of reasons why I might do cuts in my videos. I cut dead air, like when I am thinking through my choices or checking a rule. I cut the "movement" of pieces so they phase from space to space. Sometimes I will repeat a line because I fumble what I'm saying. Sometimes I pause the video to drink some water because the narration is making my throat sore. Sometimes I cut to reposition the camera, or to take a break because I am filming around real life. What you eventually see in the video is a considerably truncated version of the shoot, but every single dice roll, move, and card pull is left intact, you only lose the stuff that would drag the pace and make the video boring to watch.

I was very lucky with the pulls. There are actually more empty rooms in the deck than I remember, but it's funny that despite my good luck, if all the traps I encountered had done maximum damage they would have killed me (or the cave-in could have killed me instantly). The game really can give you a false sense of security and then hit you for six out of nowhere. I played with the catacombs expansion as a kid and didn't enjoy it, and looking into it as an adult I can see why. I'm not planning on hunting it down. I've never used any of the extra heroes, but the cards are available online so I could always proxy them to give them a go. More options for characters is never a bad thing.

There's some chatter about a new Hachette 40k sub called Imperium. Looks to be a new Conquest type thing. No info about armies or anything really yet, but likely primaris and necron. Also GW spilled more info about the Old World and a total of about 12 people seem to care on every forum I've seen.

Last I heard about the Old World was the post about Bretonnia, but I admit I'm only keeping half an eye on GW at the moment until they post something that really gets me interested. Thought that would have made a lot of people happy though, as it's a faction they can't play in AoS. I haven't heard anything about a new partworks. I'll keep an eye out to make an announcement on the channel, but I think I can safely pass on anything like that until such time as they roll out something for Middle Earth. The Star Wars Legion and Middle Earth card game partworks never seemed to go into full production. I thought the Star Wars one might have landed.

Old World is shaping up to be a human centric warbandish game with 13 Brettonian factions and about 10 Empire with a scattering of other races. Something like 4-5 units and a few heroes. Sylvania looks to be still part of the Empire on their maps. The timeline hints are pretty screwy. Everything points to something pre-Magnus the Pious and around the time of the Vampire Wars, but the Brettonian stuff seems misplaced. It's before the false grail and fall of Mousillon though. It also appears to be pre College of Magic. People seem concerned that it will be a plastic box of generic Empire troops with a resin set from Forgeworld to customize the factions like Necromunda. The biggest issue people have is that GW will absolutely nail your for model cost and that many are not willing to jump back into that. I've said it before, but no one I ever played with ever did Brettonian. I have no idea where this fetish for them comes from. Same with Tomb Kings.

@@johnmiddleton4291 When I was a kid I always loved the look of a Bret army, but didn't want to paint all the heraldry and liked ranged units too much to ever collect knights. When I dipped my toe back into the water, I picked up a starter box for Brets, painted all the peasants (you see them pop up in my D&D videos sometimes), and then painted a few knights before basically deciding I still didn't want to paint heraldry. I always loved the idea of the army though.

This is the original Games Workshop version, not the version from Fantasy Flight Games which came out many years later. The cards were kind to me in this game - the dungeon wasn't very active - but that can happen and it's unfortunate that it happened on the game I was recording. I have since recorded more playthroughs, which have a lot more going on in them. It's just the luck of the cards.

To clarify, I had incredible good luck. There are already more deadly rooms than nice rooms. The game is brutal and I've never felt the need to reduce the number of empty room cards, because death happens so frequently anyway. Also, keep in mind that I was playing with just one character. With three or four players all pulling from the same room deck and tile bag, all the nasty stuff tends to come out of the deck at a rapid pace. Still, there's no harm in removing some of the cards if you want to give it a go. Expect more hilarity and even more deaths!
