Before she was Lolth, she was the goddess Araushnee, this is the story of her betrayal of Corellon Larethian and the War of the Seldarine.

Actually that is a better way to do it then destroying the world from time to time. Maybe even abandon the very idea of an offical time in a setting. You want to experience the ancient Netheril, play in that era, do not create a great cataclysm to ressurect it (yes I hate 4e).

Best moment in a campaign EVER. A party of ultra-high level characters was hired by a pantheon to do some dirty work. Up in success, the Mage in the party was talking to a lawful good deity in said pantheon. The goddess was thanking him for helping to protect her precious worshippers and such. His response "Yes. I understand how much your benevolence means to them..... But I can imagine how much it must goad you that your benevolent might depends so deeply on their adoration. After all, without that adoration, you are merely fiction. I imagine it must be like being a politician."

15:38 this quote reminds me of one of my favorite lines from StarCraft. Specifically SC2: Legacy of the Void, where you basically help overthrow a dictator and put one allied to your cause in his place. In their ritual combat, the defender Ma'lash can be heard to say: "you will lead our people to ruin!" Alarak, the aggressor (voiced impeccably by John de Lancie) replies with glee and madness: "You're right about one thing, Ma'lash. I WILL rule them!"

Araushnee is like the elven equivalent to Lucifer: Began from a place of beauty, but corrupted by pride and ambition. Only Araushnee thought it better to rule in the Abyss, rather than Lucifer’s choice of Hell.

Araushnee's domain in Avendor is still around, albeit in a sad and decrepit state: (quoting from from Planes of Chaos) "Once an autumn grove of silver-stemmed trees, Lolth's Grove is now a silent place of dead trees, blackened stumps, and uprooted giants. The spring at its center, long ago the sight of merriment or at least reflection, is now a fouled trickle of muddy sludge. All animals avoid it except for spiders, which grow to such size that they must be hunted down from time to time. Banshees are also extremely common in the woods where Lolth's followers were once slaughtered by the hundreds. The portal to the gate town of Sylvania, Arvandor's link to the Outlands, stands near Lolth's Grove, making it dangerous for travelers." Hard to imagine Lolth as much of one for 'Merriment', but I guess a couple of Millenia stewing in the abyss as a Demon might have a deleterious effect on on your psyche.

One thing to note, the Llolth of Ebberon IS the same Llolth of Faerun. The native drow didn't worship her, they worshipped Vulkoor the Scorpion...and after Llolth sent Faerunian Drow into Storm Reach...creating a rift in the Demonweb Pits, her drow were all but exterminated in the process due to the Gatekeepers and, well, Vulkoor was a bit hungry and got access to a place full of tasty spiders and spider worshipers.

Do we know why Araushnee is associated with spiders, even before she went to the Abyss and absorbed a spider demon? It kind of makes me think that gods exist outside of time - that is that things that affect gods in the future change them retroactively as well. That might also be the source of Lolth's hatred for Correllon - she could feel her future hatred without knowing why. Maybe Correllon felt the same.
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 3 жыл бұрын
God of weavers, spiders are weavers, also god of fate.. the fate of many insects is to die in the weavings of a spider... the elves don't consider any natural animals or insects to be evil, spiders hunt in a manner they consider to be quite beautiful and serene. Araushnee could take on a fully spider form before she went to the Abyss. When she plunged down into the abyss she landed in the realm of Ghaunadaur because of the portal path he left behind after his attack on Corellon. Corellon merely reopened it and dropped her into it.

@@AJPickett Oh! Thanks for the explanation! It actually helps put a lot of Lolth/Araushnee into perspective. Eventually, the tapestry she wove was one of lies. Also thanks for the bonus clarifying info about the portal! I love drow so much more now. Learning more about Forgotten Realms really helped me get over how I saw it as overly simple or straightforward, which used to be my biggest criticism for the setting. Araushnee's motives aren't forgivable (players need something to kill with impunity and not think too hard), but with this lore they feel a little more understandable.

@@AJPickett I would think that since the transformation of a Drow into a Drider is considered a disgraceful form of punishment for failure and weakness, that to be depicted as one herself, Lolth would see that as the epitome of blasphemous disrespect and unforgivable impiousness. In other words I think she'd be pissed...lol

Eilistraee. I love her so much. Such a ploy that it would kill one of the greatest gods of all enacted by her brother and mother to not only kill her father but pin the blame on her as well . . . and yet she still found it within her to join them in the banishment so she may one day save all of those poisoned by Lolth's ambition, including her brother. This was just phenomenal. Everything was streamlined and easy to follow; learned things I didn't know before! I liked the last bit with the elf god trusting his sword, which could have just as easily struck Araushnee in the heart. Would have been ironic, therefore fitting, given how the arrow of her daughter missed the heart. Coupled with the tidbit of Araushnee feeling a tinge of regret? Love the implications of a story not yet finished. Looking forward to part two!

This is fantastic! Didn't know the early history of Lolth. Its interesting and seems to be a theme of the gods to simply banish their problems. I wonder if locking her up would not have been better, like those beings locked away in Deaths Reach? I don't think killing her would not have solved anything anyway. Like Mystra, she would just re-formed as something else as long as she had followers.

@@michaelpettersson4919 in our campaign I have a demon contract with lolth as a group patron. As we make her help us she is gotten to do good deeds. As this continues her alignment changes and we got her to care about us cause she is very possessive. So we are 'her' party. The contract states we will help her return to her drow form in exchange for her aid. She helped save our warlock already. We did the contract through a drider we befriended and I had to ask about knowledge of Araushnee and what she is and where now and that the drider was an avatar since they're all sharing her suffering. I rolled a Nat 20 with a plus 3 so I did know and carefully worded it so we contracted both the drider and her goddess. Party thought it was just the drider until a year later when someone got saves by lolth. You see her curse requires her to genuinely care and do a selfless action in order for her to change back. So the party provides the opportunity for change as she helps us. We do research and side quests for 'shortcuts' to breaking her curse to give her reasons to help. We agreed that for which she most desires her vanity we would get the aid we most require. So the cleric that I am caught some hell from the oath of redemption paladin till I quietly explained it helps her earn her forgiveness. We got her back to neutral we will see if we can get her to fully change back or not. The drider has looked more like an armored spider but has human legs again even if she still has spider ones they're less than the full drider she was and looks more hopeful. I'm spreading hope in hell and good deeds in the demon web pits of Avernus. It's fantastic.

Gods exist before their worshipers, but now need them for power, and can be shaped by them. It's an interesting dictomy. I have always loved elves and the Seladrine, so any lore on them is great. Sehanine is also said to be Corellon's consort (Angarradh was mostly considered his consort in 4e), but the Seldarine (and gods in general), aren't usually confined by monogamy. All the Seldarine are known for being genderfluid, though Corellon in particular is known for it. Of course, his "favored" form is male Question: prior to elves living on the prime material, did both the dead and the living elves exist in Arvandor? Arvandor is the elven heaven after all, but I can't remember if the living and dead used to live there simultaneously.
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 3 жыл бұрын
Sehanine makes up one third of the combined goddess which is Angarradh, so, I'd say that still counts. As for the elves in the very early years (the pre-history), at least on the world of Toril they worshipped nature and the fey lords, not the Seldarine, but, there are MANY worlds with elves on them, and we just don't know. If the elves are all descended from the native entities of Arvandor and Arboria and such, then in the very early pre-history, perhaps many of them returned and reformed as living beings back on those planes if they were killed on a prime material world, and if they were close to dying of old age (rare) back then, maybe they travelled back to Arvandor, where the days were one year or so long? It's a very interesting question, but the answers are just speculation.

@@AJPickett true, I guess it would still count. Yeah, it is an interesting question. I know the "pre-history' elves didn't worship the Seldarine (at least on Toril), but since you said Arvandor used to be the home of the elves (at least that is what I thought you said), it made me curious about whether the living and the dead lived side by side (ie, what would happen if an elf died in Arvandor). As you said, it's all speculation at this point, but it piques my curiosity lol.

Its very important from a D&D scholar perspective, to note that this lore comes from a Novel, not a game/rules source book... novels can be wrong, but the result can be so cool that we just slide the "Yeah but" under the carpet and run with it, in this case... run with it quite hard. Generally speaking, gods can't turn each other into demon lords, the elven gods are quite close to nature and the elements, and demons are VERY corrupted elemental beings, so, there is a little bit of logical wiggle room to fit some reason into what Corellon did... but it is Sketchy, very sketchy. He did it because He is a Mighty fey god, in a realm where fable and story are way more powerful than physics and we don't know if any other god could have done the same thing... it was perfect punishment, and it was cool, and it was probably a one off... otherwise, he probably would have done the same to Malkizid.

In my homebrew campaign, rather than Araushnee being corrupted into the demon Lolth, Lolth managed to possess Araushnee. (In my campaign the elves engage in ancestor worship and the Seldarine are the primordial ancestors of the elves, so demonic possession is plausible.) As a result, there are competing cults of Araushnee and Lolth. The cult of Araushnee seeks to strengthen her so that she can undo her possession.

The elves she couldn’t detect were the followers of Rillifane Rallathil. They were the wild elves. Their god is the CN god of survival, hunting, concealment and wild elves. The other possibility is that the evil nature of the future Spider Queen couldn’t see those not in her web. The wild elves aren’t the playthings that she sought to rule. They do not build cities and temples, so they are of no value to her.

In my cosmology Arauashnee was supposed to be the goddess of Magic but AO decided the elves already maintained a powerful pantheon and went with Mystryl. This is evident in her weaving and the like (the magic weave?). So she was left without much to do and well....idle hands.

I had an idea for a high-level follow-up to the _Out of the Abyss_ campaign that could involve the overthrow of the drow priestesses and Lolth's backstory, especially if there is a good-aligned drow (or half-drow) in the party: At some point before the final battle in that campaign's main story, the PCs find a cache of powerful treasures, including an artifact sword that has the words "To My Beloved Araushnee" or something to that effect in some super-ancient form of Elven. This artifact sword would have been a wedding gift of sorts from Corellon Larethian to Araushnee, but was hidden by the balor who seduced Araushnee to evil. This could serve as the catalyst for either sparking a crusade to overthrow the drow order thanks to Corellon's blessing, or even a siege of the Demonweb Pits itself. Perhaps the sword could serve as a reminder of Corellon's past love for her, and either convince the lord of the elves to give the okay, or to possibly be shown to Lolth and make her realize (with some coaxing) that she was tricked all those years ago.

I actually made this somewhat a thing in my campaign now story! The original title of hers was able to survive and thrive in a small portion of elves that managed to avoid being cast into the underdark through an illusion cast on their woods. They became pure black with white patterns, and it creates a false silhouette of animals/creatures among the trees. They are devout followers of Araushnee, and these forgotten followers allow her to keep her title and powers from the surface world. EDIT: forgot the name of the elves. I called them Shadow Elves, the first kind that took after her form. Drow evolved from them after being in the dark for so long.

"there's many different stories that tell of Araushnee and who she is" This makes sense. She is a god of lies and deceit, so her stories would be always different depending on the person. My version is that she's dealing with split custody and is just very salty against Corellon so she takes it out on all men, all the while she's low-key drunk and fucking hates everything but pretends to be happy...so she's very depressed and misses her husband basically.

Eberron does not have a Lolth. The dark elves instead worship a scorpion god called Vulkoor. Dungeons and Dragons Online did introduce an entity called the Spinner of Shadows as an analogue of Lolth, but it should be noted that Eberron does not have the issue that FR has where EVERYTHING is canon, and her existence is up to an individual DM.

My understanding is that the creators of several Dragonlance and Eberron wanted their settings to be separate from the D&D 'multiverse', of course Wotc couldn't help themselves, so we get little crossovers here and there. IIRC the Dragonlance folks were so against it that they killed off Lord Soth in retaliation to him being put into Ravenloft.
