Here is an idea some in my DnD group find plausible: wizards have such outlandish hats and clothes and accessories because what they're doing is *wearing* many of their non-perishable spell components such as copper wires, lodestones, various gemstones, pearls, fleece, feathers, etc.

I think the most natural form of magic is ritual magic. Keep in mind you don't need spell slots to ritual cast so a big bar has been lowered to be able to cast magic if you are ritual casting. My thinking is most magic is still very ritualized. That you can't get away from this. But you can internalize it. This is what spell slots allow. Instead of a long, external ritual to perform the magic you are doing an abbreviated version where the load of the ritual is put on the mage. They use their own mental fortitude and spiritual power to perform those critical aspects within themselves so they can get away with a faster casting. This, of course, puts a big burden on the mage. A burden that would be carried by the world itself if it was cast in what is seen as ritual magic. It is a trade off. The mage takes the burden unto themselves so to achieve faster casting times. But obviously there are still a lot of extra things a wizard has to do. He has components that resonate with the frequency they wish to invoke. They have gestures to help with the accuracy of their directions. Words to gives the magic the direction it needs to perform the task. So why not their garb is also part of this whole thing in some way? Wearing charms and bangles that aid in getting the right magically wavelength caught up in your casting. But integrated in a way that seems nothing more than bizzare fashion sense.

In the Darksun setting arcane magic is outlawed on pain of death, so spell books have to be disguised in some way. The design on a rug or the carvings on a staff can actually be a spell. In one campaign, the main henchman of the BBEG had his spellbook tattooed on his body. After we had killed him, the ranger in our party drew his skinning knife, and looked at my wizard and said, "How badly do you want that spell book?" A collective "EWWWWW!" came from the rest of the party.

I remember when the first edition players hand book came out in 1977. There actually two types pf spell books. One being their Main spell books these would have every spell the Wizard had collected over their years of study or adventuring. The other type was known as a field spell book. These are what they would take with them when adventuring. Any new spells went into these until they had a chance to place these spell into their more permanent spell books. Of course the younger the practitioner the more likely he or she only has the latter spell books. I really like your video. You have taken a great deal of time to research this information. How long have been playing DnD. I actually started playing in 1976, the game had only been in print for two years at that time under TSR.

I like to think that when a Wizard is casting a spell they manifest magical circles, like what Doctor Strange does. These circles act as a mathematical formula to tap into the weave of magic, draw upon its power, shape it, then manifest it into reality. Each school of magic has a basic outline for that school, but within that outline is a complex formula designed to do a specific spell. That's one of the reasons why Wizards have to prepare spells each day, it's cause they have to memorize the exact formula of the spell otherwise it may not work or worse backfire on them. Example: When Sephiroth uses his Super Nova spell he recites an equation that 1) creates a pocket dimension similar to the solar system, 2) transports his target inside the pocket dimension, 3) causes the sun to explode destroying the system within the pocket dimension and hopefully his targets as well

Good video. I think that one of the aspects has really made me think about the magic of D&D is comparing the magic users, and what the stat for their spellcasting ability says about how their magic works. Clerics, Druids, and Rangers are wisdom which gives an awareness of of surroundings, thu is them connecting to such forces. Bards, Paladins, sorcerers, and Warlock have charisma, which is the ability to take how you are feeling and show it on the outside, thus it is variations of imposing magic on that will. While wizards are intelligent, the ability to recall information and make mental connections, and thus I think wizards about the understanding of the reality through memorising formulae, for which their spellbooks are notes on. It kind of gives this feeling entirely being about memory and memorization of the formulae and with them ingredients, and I connect it to my own time studying. But then I kind of look at something like the hag, essentially a witch, which has maybe some aspects I think of Wizard, but with charisma there can be more to it then just memorising. Which is to say that I like the warlock who might appear quite similar, but feels rather than memorises, kind of like how I got through university but was really bad at memorizing, and had a different perception of the topics of being able to understand in a way more than recounting a formulae. Which hard to explain, but I think wizards could be kept back by some of the whole nature of magic by what fits within formulae and can make them sort of stubborn, trying to quantify everything into kind of simple terms which might have flaw. Perhaps these causing problems when a wild card is added, like how the far realm is indescribable to normal logic.
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the far realm is mainly psychic in nature, that is one of the main themes of it, so, you can see how the far realm would tempt a wizard, with the promise of bridging the gaps in understanding, providing the precognitive and intuitive leaps to greater avenues of arcane power, navigating the mechanics of the cosmos by feel, rather than wrote formula... but.. how awesomely dangerous and corrupting the far realm is, we know full well. *Beware, young apprentice, the prismatic dimensions of the outer reach, the far flung vibrational planes of discordant mind.. through them you may indeed gain rapid ascent to power, but with a shattered mind, and mutated body. *

I am not sure if it is connected lore wise, but Nothic is supposed to be a wizard inflicted with a curse by certain knowledge. Or maybe the reliance on incomplete knowledge create a glitch that makes an aberration like a gibbering mouther, or mimic. They get so caught up in their theories, that like some of their strange habits it can become detached from their normal reality. Which maybe Modrone are supposed to keep in check, their march being like a system update for reality of what wizards might observe and create.

Interesting idea of +X Weapons. Never heard that before (mainly from lack of personal research. X3) Funnily enough, though, I'm playing a Fighter character in Pathfinder who's become capable of crafting magic weapons and armor despite a total lack of internal magic or magical knowledge. And we interpret her crafting, say, a simple +X sword as making the blade, then meditating with it for the crafting time, intensely focusing her mind into the blade, the metal, the shape, and imparting her force of will, martial understanding, and spiritual energy into the piece. And the effect comes from it resonating on multiple quantum levels simultaneously, in sort of the same effect of materials from multiple planes. It harmonizes with those planes, instead.

When it came to spell components I always liked using two different mechanics. One was the idea of spell slots the number of which was determined both by the level of the magic-user, and the user's intelligence stat which I normally called battle-casting. This would be literally a slot used by the magic-user to maintain a spell they had cast to within on gesture in the earlier part of the day, and could release by finishing the desired gesture, but which also had their potential power slowly erode over the course of the day thus needing to be redone each day. Than you have the typical spell-casting of incantations an components that would unleash the power of the spell in it's fullest extent after doing the needed things, but which uses the spell casting time aspect unlike the idea of pre-casting the spell an applying it to one of the spell slots. Also i see the items a magic-user carried from their spell-book, to the staffs an trinkets as items they might actually use to store the energy of the spells they had cast earlier in the day preemptively, and then using a gesture to release that energy of that readied spell when it was needed. There would be other things like formulas, theories, and even studies into ancient or new spells that might be hidden in the items as well. I also quite loved the idea of spirit casters like in the Record of Lodoss wars series, in which a caster makes a pact with a spirit of some kind (various kinds could be created), and that spirit could be contacted an used almost as a controlled ally thru using their innate abilities. Than you also have in my opinion one fo the best non-typical mage concepts in the form of the Tech-mages of Babylon five, who literally use technology to create the illusions an effects that many would call magic.

there are a few things rarely tought off that I could see in a magical school, all of which synergising with each others : Sensory deprivations baths used to meditate in, to help focus the mind especially useful when one try to expend senses Performance-enhancing drugs, often magical or alchemical, essentially potions that do not have a statblock because they are not useful for adventurers Brain-enhancing transmutations scrolls, or wizards Enchenters mental guides that help with meditation. Maybe a big part of what made enchantment it's own school is that it is used by wizard to expand the capabilities of their minds. They would help with the students meditating in the baths. The idea is that since wizard rely so much on intelligence, they use magical means of improve their intelligence to superhuman levels. the brains of long-dead wizard preserved through necromantic means in jars, able to create psychic projections of said wizards. Said projections are often used as assistants tutors, or guides when reading texts written by said wizards during their life. Care have to be observed when using those magic holocrons as they may attempt to possess the users....

If these are what ypu seek then I advise you to read Jack Vance's " The Dying Earth" series and the rest of his works. In a world so far into the future the sun is almost dead, wizards seek to find a way to preserve the human race, or just mess with stuff. It's got everything you mentioned: Spirits the size of a thumb that play a concordant melody that invigorates the minds of whoever here them, A wine that when Drank elevates all senses to the magnificence of the Upper Realms so the drinker may comprehend greater infinities, Chambers that dilute the passage of time and space so one may meditate for eons in a single day. It fits DnD amazing, which is fairly obvious when you realise that it's the main inspiration Gygax took and used for Wizards in DnD. Vancian Magic (spellslots) comes from the author, the way spells are named are also from Vance: "Mordecainan's Magnificent Mansion" compared to "Phandells Discriminating Barrier" Some spells and items are pure expys from his work: "The Excellent Prismatic Spray" and of course "Ioun Stones". Try it out, it's got the best wizards in fiction in my opinion.

I like to borrow a little from the Discworld series by saying that in many spells an arcane magic users do are not so much creating things as drawing them forth from another dimension. This means places where there ha been very extensive magic use will have weaken walls of reality, spells are stronger, occasionally creatures from other planes will turn up either by their own will or completely by accident, random spells and magical effects will go off ect.
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 7 жыл бұрын
Actually that is perfectly in tune with the situations of the D&D realms, in the case of Forgotten Realms, the Dawn War and how reality got messed up, almost broken on two occasions.. the incursion of the Far Realm when the living gate was smashed, and when Tharizdun used the shard of evil to create the Abyss, which was a calamity for (at least) 666 different dimensions.. so yes, reality is most assuredly weakened in the D&D world, and the bicycle\octopus terrors lurk on the borders, going 'scratch scratch scratch' :D

I know the basics such as the schools, what each of the schools does and so on, but I am more so particularly "in the blue" about the processes behind the usage of the arcane. I have done some deep research, even finding out about archaic, Draconic, and all those relative terms, but there just seems to be a disconnect in how it is different fundamentally from things such as the divine by anything other than origin.

I wrote up a spell component list for 3.5
@krispalermo8133
@krispalermo8133 4 жыл бұрын
3.5e DMG: Creating Magic Trap Items; feat: create wondrous item. I hated " spell components " and other exotic materials to craft magic items. " How do you create a Master Work Spoon ? Or a Staff ?" Trade out 99% of gp value of said item and pay the full difrence with the spell caster XP. DMG: Variant rules for learning Feats and Skills. d20 Star Wars 3.5e, Break down the Soldier class starting feats and save and you get close to four months of training to get a 1st-level starting Star Wars Soldier. Just nearly the average time to train a "soldier" in Real Life. In Real Life people 'just' gain XP but they don't take the time to do anything with it. Like train to do something ! Long story short, just pay 5xp X caster level X spell level for effect. 6th-level wizard cast Fire Ball spell. cost: 6 caster levels x 3rd-level spell x5= 180xp. Scribe Scroll or Magic item trap, one time use cost. My game shop just have ever spell caster make stander Spellcraft checks DC:10+ spell level to cast a spell. When they play AD&D2e, you have to roll under the wizard Int score. The group also plays World of Darkness: Vampire & Mage, so they like to try to power game everything. All depends on what type of play your DM, or game shop runs it campaign setting. a.) All characters Must take Down Time to learn Skills, Feats, and save bonuses. That is time lag that can be measure in weeks to months in the campaign setting. i.) Play back up characters. b.) Mile Stone, play it as a story base game. Gain XP after each Chapter of Story Plot. c.) It is a Table Top Video Game, make the kills then just advance in level. So a guy in their 20's is a 25th-level epic multi class character while a 54 yo is still only a 13th-level fighter. Spell components a.) natural stander b.) fresh vs dry, what time of the year are they used for normal or add special spell effect. c.) special with natural Meta Magic effects. d.) the spell component has been empower through spell use. i.) does the caster Has to drink more than Two potions to cast a given spell for the effect to set in ? Such as drink a Strength potion to gain combat abilities from a 6th-level arcane spell ? e.) Some of the DM campaign I played in can be real pricks to the spell caster in the game. i.) collect a wild rose from the Elemental Plane of Fire to cast a 2nd-level spell. x.) your wizard has to Plane Shift, with Elemental Fire Protection, combine layer four to six spells with Polymorph Other to transmute a normal 'wild rose,' so it can grow Wild on the Plane of Fire for a few years. All of this can be done by a 12th-level wizard. Effect: the Wild Rose of Elemental Fire will naturally Maximize Spell feat all fire base spells . xx.) how much will this rose cost and how much is it safe to use ?

Hounds shed a lot so honestly a single blood hound would be plenty for a small town apothecary and larger ones might have a breeder nearby who brushes their dogs regularly to sell it as spell components as a side hustle in addition to selling the puppies. For hummingbird feathers there’s a course killing the poor birds but I’m sure some druids, Bird folk, fairies or elementals from the plane of air would make excellent bird keepers who would be able to take the feathers away from the nest without harming the bird.

My game shops run with, F! the gp and pay for it with XP. " That witch , I saw her carve a little wooden mouse right in front of my eyes ! Now I can't get rid of the mice in my house !" I as a DM still allow the use of extra dimensional metals from the outer Realms to forge Masterwork weapons with natural enchantments and bonuses however I place certain restrictions on it for example you couldn't Forge material from the plane of limbo with material from the plane of mechanist there too opposing ideologies and principles and this is reflected in the material that even makes up the realm this keeps people from getting an ungodly powerful weapon but secretly there is a way and it involves outworld sigil and the spire and materials gained from there one thing I would do if I was in an adventure that took me to the Great Wheel outer realms I would collect spools of metal specifically iron cable or steel cord preferably steel cord imagine taking steel cord from around Great Wheel combining it with steel cord made from the metal of outworld forged buy the greatest blacksmith of all of sigil you would then have a weapon capable of bringing death to any creature except for maybe the lady of pain, the Mad God, and of course AO but all other beings would probably meet their end to a weapon produced in such a way in fact if anybody figured out what you were doing you would probably get killed before you completed it

Less specific than a wizard school, an arcane school where you could have the arcane magic users study and have more potential for complete parties. The arcane trickster, eldritch knight, arcane cleric, and sorcerers all together. Or is this more of a university type with several different schools on one campus. Have you done videos on the difference between the different sources of magic, divine, bard, etc?

University type place with several different schools on one campus. For " adults." a.) arcane trickster: rogue/ thief," Harry Potter & friends" may have open a few 'locks' but it didn't show the students training to Pick locks by hand. b.) eldritch knight: that is more like a multi class fighter/ wizard maybe sorcerer with a prestige class. 3.5e rules, True Strike: grants +20 to hit insight bonus on next attack roll, follow with the feat Power Attack. i.) Harry Potter Hogworths school didn't show any melee training.

I like to think the spell components works in a similar way to alchemy in The Witcher 2, it is not that exact component that makes the spell works but the active ingredient or the product of enzymes artificial or natural. For example a hellhound tail component may contain a particular substance also found in the modification of boiled troll's blood. Making it 'cheaper' (comparing the former with trolls blood) to obtain, but only with much research and experimentation. Otherwise many spells would be very expen$ive to cast in daily basis like we see on games.
@jacobfreeman5444
@jacobfreeman5444 4 жыл бұрын
Well, not all components are consumed. That is more of a higher level magic thing. For lots of lower level spells just having the component is enough. Think of it as a focus. Having it lets you tap into the correct energies to produce that effort. Which may explain why some do consume the item. It draws the power directly from it.
