A DM or “Dungeon Master” is what controls an actual game of Dungeons and Dragons. Basically the DM is the computer server connecting the players. They also usually come up with the plot and setting of the story and decide if the players fail or succeed.

Just for reference, a DnD movie that actually reflected what a typical DnD campaign is like would be something more akin to the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films, but Medieval. Because DnD characters as portrayed by DnD players don't act like typical fantasy characters. They act like Star-Lord and his band of lunatics.

I mean, this D&D movie in particular reflects actual D&D pretty accurately, just by being cheesy and campy as hell. The badguys are so hammy and poorly acted, the goodguys are so flat and two-dimensional. I loved this movie as a kid and I still love it now if only for the cringey, cheesy nostalgia.

You can tell Jeremy Irons is trying so hard to save the movie. Between this, Brom in the Eragon movie, and his role in Kingdom of Heaven, he's like forever doomed to be the best actor in horrible medieval films.

The directors cut is fantastic it’s a completely different movie. Oliver stones Alexander directors cut is fantastic as well there’s quite a few of the large scale epics that can’t be cut down to a 2 hour movie

You can tell the approach to movies in the 2000s was still very much in the 90's. The new Dungeons & Dragons brought me here and it is a whole world apart. Hopefully Jeremy Irons will have a chance for a cameo and reedem himself ( if he needs more cash for his castle)

I remember getting the DVD of this for a Christmas present when I was in high school, back when I started playing Dungeons & Dragons, and I actually enjoyed the movie. This film definitely wasn't perfect be no means, there are still MAJOR flaws with it, but I found it entertaining. In a final note, I don't hate the movie at all, but I can understand why people do.

Funny thing is, the failure of this film is what made New Line step it up to ensure the LotR trilogy was spectacular

Doubt it. That was all Jackson's vision and execution completely outside of the normal hollywood planning and shooting process, going so far as to go to new Zealand, where there wasn't a movie industry to speak of. Since they came out within a year of each other, one can't have influenced the other.

I was around 10 or 11 when I first watched it and not into gaming, so I never heard of the game. But I remember loving this movie a lot. Now if I ever watch it, I do see how bad the movie is, but I'll always like it as it holds a lot of fond memories for me

Watch the commentary version. It's mostly the director complaining about how he would have done this scene or that scene if he had a bigger budget (from what I read his constant harping got him blacklisted and he has not directed since) and the main actor saying, "Oh I almost died here because we wanted to get a really good shot so I just waited longer before jumping out of way of this padded but still several hundred pound pendulum swinging at 30 mph" or "When he slams me against the wall here I bleed out the back of my scalp" or "Ooh this is where I fractured my finger."

This movie is free on Vudu right now with ads. I watched this the other day, and aside from the empress' acting being not too good and a few scenes feeling like they started without a proper establishment, the whole movie has this goofy charm. It feels like it could actually have come from a D&D campaign where everyone is really into playing their characters. :)

My dad has seen some of this and thought it was silly. He considers Excalibur, Solomon Kane and Lord of the Rings as the best. I had fun playing the game of D&D.

I remember seeing this movie in theaters. A couple teenage boys were behind me. Every time the elf was on the screen, they would point and laugh at the female elf's uber ridiculous pointy chestplate.
