They are found in a large area of South America. There are several different spieces of marmoset the most common in pet trade is the pygmy marmoset and the common marmoset. There are also tamarin monkeys in simular ranges as the marmosets, they are both "new world" monkeys. In some areas of south america the marmoset is classified as an invasive pest species and are disruptive to native wildlife, marmosets are highly adaptable. They live in small family groups of about 6-12, with only one alpha reproducrive pair in the group. Substances produced by the alpha pair supresses the reproduction of the other group members. The alpha female has one pair of babies a season, at first only the alpha male will carry the babies and given to alpha female to nurse. As they grow the group will share in the care of the baby pair, again the alpha female nurses and the rest of care is done by alpha male and other group members. Memebrs will split off from the group as babies are added and the group will break up if one of the alpha pair dies. They are much less expensive to buy as pet in south and north america, likely due to availablity and ease of transport, where as they would be more expensive in areas outside of that. Due to their invasive status and high numbers, they are in demand for lab animals as they are also cheaper, more easily obtainable, easier ro handle, and require less cage space as macaque species...the historically favored primate lab animal specimen.

Also care should be taken to assure that marmosets are not released into your environment. They are very adaptive and could easily live in the wild or your area. You wouldn't want them to become an invassive species, the effects could be bad for native species in your area.
